There are three Gopher alums who are head coaches in the WCHA right now. The most established on that list is Nadine Muzerall at OSU, but would she even view it as a step up? Sure the facilities are better at the U but she's done a statue-worthy job with the Buckeyes and is in national title contention every year. With what’s going on in college football right now, it’s too tempting to take this a step further. Who are we thinking would be the top 3-5 names to watch if the Gopher job opens up?
There's Bethany Brausen at St. Thomas and there's Mira Jalosuo at St. Cloud. Brausen is not only an alum but a former assistant (as Muzerall is), I think either would take the job if offered. I'd be more comfortable with Brausen, of the two.
Another option is elevating the current top assistant, Greg "Boom" May, who the current team seems to really like. Gun to my head, he is my preferred choice for continuity reasons, probably even over Muzzy, because I feel there is future upside on this team and in future recruiting classes I wouldn't want to mess with.
No Gopher alums on current PWHL staffs, if you're thinking that way.
I'm sure there will be some push for Natalie Darwitz, the exiled top assistant of a few years ago who also lost her PWHL job under similar circumstances.
Joel Johnson will probably never coach college hockey again if the rumors on this board of what caused his departure at UST have accuracy.
