Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

One thing that is not talked about a lot is the loss of offensive firepower from the defense over the last few years. Going back to 2011/2102 team, the list is extensive with names like Schelper, Bozek, Jalosuo, Gillanders, Ramsey, McMillen...The 2012/2013 team had 57 goals from the top 6 defensemen...57! That's like video game stats. This years team has 6 goals from the top 6 about halfway through the season. It hurts to have the current senior class have one of the headline defense recruits not even play defense and struggle to make the everyday lineup. The best defensemen out of the class is a converted forward (Stecklein wasn't part of this recruiting class).

When #2 graduates the last of those tall and talented defensemen from 2012/2013 will be gone and they will be missed indeed. Okay, #9 was "only" 5'9" but she played big.

I don't think it's been mentioned here. In Sunday's pregame interview Coach Frost talked about Dani Cameranesi. He said he was hoping to have her back for BU and he was hoping she could go to Michigan right after that to the national camp.

It was uncertain and far from definitive but much more hopeful than I was fearing after Saturday's game.

I don't know if he heard it from Frost, or saw it for himself (and I don't know if you guys heard him say it during the FS TV broadcast) but Brian Posick, who did the play-by-play and is the Wisconsin men's radio guy, said during the broadcast (I saw it on replay Monday morning) that Cameranesi had tried to skate before the game Sunday, but just couldn't go. By Sunday AM, they'd have known if her knee was bad, and if it was, I can't imagine they would have let her try it out. So that makes me think it can't be too bad.

I heard that as well, and it made me wonder if the coaches had a doctor's diagnosis before letting her try it out. In all probability they did, and knew she wouldn't do further harm by giving it a go. Hopefully it's just a strain that with proper treatment will heel quickly.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

I don't doubt that they missed 21 but I don't see them making up that 6 goal deficit with her in there at 100%. That was all I was saying.

Cameranesi wouldn't have made up that deficit by herself, but it could easily have been a completely different game because of the cascading issues that ARM brought up. Aside from those, the mental aspect played a role. I think, "We have to make up for Dani's scoring," got stuck in their heads, because I saw a lot of players trying to do too much. Wisconsin's second goal resulted from Wolfe making a bad play at the offensive blue line.

The second line was especially guilty of this. Piazza, Reilly, and whoever was playing the other wing on a particular shift got caught up ice constantly, so there wasn't any of the backchecking pressure that this team depends upon. Reilly scored, and the line generated chances, but the trade-off wasn't a net positive. Would they have played differently if they had had confidence (whether or not justified by the actual results) that the first line would chip in its usual 2-3 goals a game? Who knows. On the one hand, it would be really nice if Piazza and Reilly would start scoring like they did last year, but they need to do it organically within the system they've been playing. It's also why I think, with perfect hindsight, that moving Schipper to the first line was probably a mistake; it caused more disruption than it helped. There wasn't any way to know that in the twenty hours the staff had to plan.

Over on the Wisconsin thread, there's been some comments about the goaltending on Sunday, which I think are largely misplaced. Peters didn't have a good game, but she sure as hell wasn't the biggest, or even the third or fourth biggest, problem they had. Yeah, it would be nice if she'd stopped a couple more pucks, but those were great scoring chances the team in front of her was allowing. Watching her, I don't think that stopping odd man chances is her strength, so maybe the others should concentrate on not giving up so many of them.

As I said above, what happened was the result of a lot of things going wrong, many of which were, I suspect, unique to the moment. Not all of them, but a lot. I think they'll be mentally a lot more ready to play without Cameranesi this coming weekend if they have to, they'll have had time to practice line combinations. And maybe they won't be without her.

Some of those issues are real and ongoing. Without Cameranesi, I don't think they're a threat to win the national championship, but most of these teams have someone on the roster that's that important.

The UM transition D was awful, but I don't recall Peters making a big save on any other partial breaks. She looks pretty mechanical to me, I'm not sure how great of a reaction goalie she is from what I saw this weekend.

As Eeyore said, she didn't have a good game on Sunday. But she did pretty well on Saturday, having made 37 saves on 37 Wisconsin shots. So I'd call it an up and down weekend for her, just like the rest of the team playing in front of her.

One game does not make a career. I remember ARD having a doozy against Team USA a few years ago where she gave up 4 in the 1st period. It happens. Great goaltenders have short memories, let's see how she bounces back. Looking at some of the highlights, she looked very much alone on many of the goals scored.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

This is unrelated to Gopher hockey, but maybe not considering the date today. I want to mention the passing of a lifelong coach, including hockey, Emmett Yanez, who died on March 3rd at the age of 96. A Golden Gloves Hall of Fame Boxing coach he was also a WW11 veteran with the 82nd Airborne. Thanks coach and to all the veterans who enable us to enjoy hockey and everything else in this country.

Goalies often get too much credit & too much blame for results that have a lot more to do with the 5 players in front of them than what they are responsible for. Nobody should be OK with what happened Sunday but there is plenty of blame to go around & Peters should not internalize all of it.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

Gophers get a commitment from Blake freshman forward Addie Burton.

I believe that would make 2 freshman forwards 0 sophomore forwards and 4 Junior forwards with verbal commits to UMN so far.

I believe you're right. Here's what I have for forwards:

Juniors
Abigail Boreen - Hill-Murray
Taylor Heise - Red Wing
Emily Oden - Edina
Catie Skaja - New Prague

Sophomores
None

Freshmen
Addie Burton - Blake
Abbie Murphy - Chicago Mission U16

Ya just had to bring that up...I'm a team USA guy, but it still hurt a lot to read that box score.

Juniors
Abigail Boreen - Hill-Murray
Taylor Heise - Maple Grove
Emily Oden - Edina
Catie Skaja - New Prague

Sophomores
None

Freshmen
Addie Burton - Blake
Abbie Murphy - Chicago Mission U16

That's looks correct...other than Heise is from Red Wing :)

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

I'm trying hard to contain my enthusiasm for next years recruiting class but I will say this. If Taylor Wente is supposedly your least heralded forward out of the 3 for next year, that speaks to how good the other two are.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

geeze if somebody had told me before last weekend that the Gophers would split with WI and the game they won would be a shutout I'd have taken that.
In a way getting your butt kicked is a good thing, it is a wakeup call and I bet the players have been all ears this week on what the coaches are telling them, not that it is normally a problem
what difference does it make if they lost 3-2 or 8-2?, if they had lost 3-2 they might still be moaning about the shot that went wide or that hit the pipe, the defense would be still having nightmares about the goals that went in , yada yada ....
they got beat and there is nothing to do about it except focus on this coming weekend and make the adjustments so it doesn't happen again
your reaction to Peter's weekend tells more about you, she had her best game and worst game,
same about the team as a whole, they played their best and worst game this past weekend
which one you dwell on reveals if you are a glass half full or have empty person

Fair point about the split.

I'll admit, I'm a glass half full person but we also HAVE an empty person on here and I'll let you guess who that is. ;)
