Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

Once the Gophers figured out that they can't all chase the puck into the corner, this was a pretty easy game. And I'm not sure that Ludwig and Paskey's calls were any better this week, but they were certainly different.

When I originally said that the WCHA didn't want penalties called because it would allow less skilled teams to compete & make the conference more competitive it was tongue in cheek. After todays game I may have to reconsider that being a joke. Luddy called things today that even I questioned. They laid off later in the game but early thinking about a check was two minutes. That indicates to me the refs DO know what a penalty is but choose not to call them in league games. Why would all the refs suddenly decide to not call anything if it wasn't an organized thing? Maybe my joke was not a joke?

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

When I saw Ludwig skate onto the ice my first thought was UGH - LUDWIG....then I saw Paskey. The fact that Luddy raises his arm AT ALL is a miracle. For the last two years I thought he had some type of shoulder problem and could not raise his arm above his head. Last week I watched a badger take out Piazza from behind with a cross check in the corner right in front of me and Luddy just shook his head at Piazza as if to say -NAH, you just fell. Ludwig did get a hooking call right last night - Princeton's stick went up a Gopher Jersey and took a player out - a call that he failed to call on Rodgers during the season (I have a picture of it!) and he was WATCHING! I have umpired softball and referred basketball and TRIED to be consistent with my calls. I will admit that you are going to miss calls at times - it happens. But I have NEVER seen so much inconsistency in a sport as I do the officiating of Women's College hockey. It almost seems like each game has different rules for the officials and other games it appears as if they just are going to let them play until it gets so chippy they have to call SOMETHING

“It was a little emotional in the locker room after the game,” Brandt said. “Last game here at Ridder, and Kess had a few people in tears — maybe more than a few. It’s been a great run here, and we’re just looking forward to finishing our senior year and our team’s great season.”

UM Band members are in the air on their way to New Hampshire to support GWH this weekend :)

(CrazyDave)(or whomever):

Are all pep bands subsets of the Marching Band?

Does everyone in the marching band play at football games and then individuals choose what other teams' games to play at?

Thanks to CD for the heads-up on the team send-off. It was great fun to high-five the players as they left Ridder!

And with the handouts I think we now have enough Ridder Arena anniversary towels to completely cover our sofa in the TV/Gopher hockey room.

Pretty sure that is correct. My cousin's kid is in the Marching band and he tried to get Men's Hockey band but got Women's instead as a freshman (priority by grade). Now he's happy to be in the Women's Hockey Band in his second season.:)

Oh man, wish I knew you were there too, we could have discussed the Johnson/Harding rivalry!

Dave will correct me if I am wrong but I believe you had to try out & be accepted in the pep bands. I feel like I have seen 3 configurations at Ridder including one that is obviously not as polished so I assume they are the freshman. Then there are the old timers that Dave shows up with at times.

The three winter pep bands are all by audition and have a fixed member list.

When there were only two bands (before fall 1999), there was a requirement that you had to be in the marching band that autumn, but that requirement didn't apply to the new third band (which mostly covered women's athletics events). It was that way through 2003-2004, but I don't know if that's still the case -- that the two pep bands require marching band membership and the third pep band doesn't -- or if things have changed. I do know that they renamed the three groups so that they're now not sport-specific (they're now called Gold Band, Maroon Band, and Gopher Band).

Thank you Crazy. Do you mind another question :D
Since this is spring break, do you think we'd be getting Gold, Maroon, or Gopher, or do you think we're getting a mix and match volunteer organization?

I think it's primarily volunteers, though the number of band members is capped -- I believe the number is 25, including the director -- for playoff games.

Hey, I've been trying for 50 years to forget those games since they were almost all losses. We'll probably be at Ridder to welcome the team back though. I'll be wearing my maroon and gold Knight colors. See you then, maybe.

An interesting article in today's Pioneer Press on coach Brad Frost, and another previewing tomorrow's matchup with Wisconsin:
