Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

Bad choice of photo I take it.

I like that pic. its the only one in 2 years that will help her prove (name plate) to her kids that she actually played at BC.
luckily she grew up with lots of tough coaches along the way...which helps with all that goes with a tough loss.
it was much better than last year...as I'm sure you would agree.

"The Russians feature University of Calgary forwards Iya Gavrilova and Alexandra Vafina."
Can this be the same Iya Gavrilova that played for UMD umpteen years ago?

Same person, (Vafina is ex-UMD as well) seems she's been there forever, kind of reminds me of Sonny Drysdale. She's in her 5th year so I'd imagine she graduates this year.

Danielle Goyette is the Head Coach and controversial Tim Bothwell, ex-U Vermont head coach a few years ago (remember the Brown Thread-Lite, aka Vermont thread) is the assistant coach. From Vermont, after his apparent close pal the A.D. couldn't take the heat for him any longer, he became the coach of the Calgary team in the CWHL. I guess that didn't work out for whatever reason(s).

It is indeed a very small community.

From the article...

"With one year of college eligibility remaining, Stecklein has a shot at becoming a four-time national champion next season."

Thankfully she will be back to bolster a defensive group that will have more question marks than they have had for the last few years. Couple that with inexperience in goal and next year may have some more bumps in the road than what Gopher fans have become accustomed to.

I know folks don't like these kinds of comparison...but I'll ask anyways.

Do people think that this recruiting class can rival last year when we had Potomak, Williamson and Skarzynski?

Woken, Agnew, and Keller is a very solid group. Add in Schammel to the mix and your forward group will be strong. Marshall and Robinson have a lot of potential on D but it's a big adjustment for freshmen to come in and play well on defense. The biggest unknown for me is the goaltender. That is the long answer...The short answer is yes.

oh geeze, we're talking about next year already

that's a tough group to follow
the incoming group is a complete mystery to me, the only one I have seen, thanks to the internet, is Agnew
who seemed to move the puck around as if she were on a Gopher PP the two games I watched

Thankfully she (Stecklein) will be back to bolster a defensive group that will have more question marks than they have had for the last few years. Couple that with inexperience in goal and next year may have some more bumps in the road than what Gopher fans have become accustomed to.

next year they will have 3 seniors and one junior, never mind their skill level, that's great
add in their skill level, I'd say every other coach would love to have the big questions, whatever they are, you allude to
given the situation, the 2 coming in will have a lot of mentoring and ice time
the only question, and I'm not even sure the coaches know at this point, is will Skarzynski be a forward or blueliner?
IMO, Barlow showed a lot of hockey skill in her brief times on the ice, I wouldn't rule her out
I'd say they are better situated next year than last year and certainly better than 2013/14.

the following year has bigger questions, how do you replace 3 seniors? we saw what happened after 2012/13

The biggest unknown for me is the goaltender..
the big question there is how can any goalie follow up on Leveille's success against the Badgers?

Like your optimism and hope your right. Its hard to follow a year where you keep most everyone and add the best player in Canada and Miss Minnesota in a very tight recruiting class. Agnew sounds like she may have the most accolades coming in. No?

Agnew and Woken both have strong U18 team resumes (Agnew with Canada and Woken with USA). I think you are going to be pleasantly surprised at how good Woken is.

I'll take next years Gopher Frosh over anyone elses. There are some strong players going to other teams but I don't think there is a better group.

While she won't be a RotY type, I think Marshall is going to be a very important player in her first season.
