Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

Cameranesi-Pannek-Potomak
Schammel-Piazza-Schipper
Williamson-Agnew-Reilly
Skarzynski-Woken-Rodgers
(alternates-Gunderson, Smith, Keller, Haley, Barlow)

Wolfe-Stecklein
Baldwin-Marshall
Robinson-Cline

That's a cluster... No wonder oldDave thru up his hands.

I heard a vague positive report on D'Angelo. I know nothing of her. (Next year's Gulstene looked great in the U18 tourney over the holidays)

Looks like a couple players battling to move up to fifth line spots next year.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

I'd like to see Pannek move up from leading the second line to co leading the first

Call me a tough fan...but the team is going to need to progress to match a UW team that returns a core capable of matching last year's Gopher NC team. It will be a tall order.

It's probably good Wisconsin is last on the schedule. They look to come out of the box smokin', Gophers have a lot of sorting out to do. And, as you say, hopefully a lot of progression from a bunch of players. I'm with you on Kelly P. I keep hoping she's working on skating speed exercises this summer. I could see her being anywhere from a very good player to major star. I think she also has good leadership potential.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

Alex Woken most likely won't be a fourth liner. She has top six skills.

Geez, the forward group for this coming year is ridiculously deep.

With the depth of the forward group, Skarzynski could be put back in the defensemen group. They could use her skating ability on defense.

Looking at this I keep hoping Frost gives the fourth line more time than he has in the past. I seriously think that the third and fourth could win games for them in games (Wisconsin) where the first two lines battle to a tie.

maybe someone knows, did Mark Johnson use his 4th line at Ridder during the regular season?
he may have in Madison, or at Ridder in the WCHA tournament.

you put your 4th line out there and the opposing coach is going to put his first or second line out.
When you are the home team you cmight get your 4th line out there when the time is right, but if you are the visiting team that isn't likely going to happen unless you have a big lead.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

I am going to say it again:
Potomak=center
I was told last year that Frost likes big centers. (Davis & Terry were big:confused:)
Apparently so they can use their size to forecheck and play defense.
Potomak can’t forecheck?
Do we need to review the semifinal against Wisconsin?
Yes, yes, I believe we do.

 Can never watch that too much.
Potomak can’t play defense?
She only lead the team in +/-, and by a comfortable margin over the other forwards.
A center should also be good at faceoffs.
Maybe 50 is too small a sample, but her winning percentage is up there with the national leaders.
A center should create offense.
Tied for the league lead in assists.
Oh, and a center should also be able to score.
Do we need to review the title game?
Yes, yes I believe we do.

can never watch that too much either :D

I think most here would agree Potomak was really tremendous this year. But I think she has the potential to be one of the all time college greats - see Kessel during her Kaz run. She's not there yet...but odds are quite good she'll get there.

True, as far as it goes. It is not conventional wisdom but the MN 4th line would be competitive against any but the first line (and maybe them in some cases) for the bottom half of the WCHA and non-conference teams like Lindenwood. NOTE: not saying better, not saying equal but competitive. It would work in some situations against 2 of the other 3 WCHA teams. There is a risk they might lose a game & end up 3rd instead of 2nd in the RPI which is a risk that has to be weighed. The up side would be a complete understanding of the capability (maybe a well rested 4th could have been a real boon in the 3rd OT a couple years back?) and more rest for the top lines. The down side, besides the risk of an additional loss, would be that the top line might not produce the Kaz level numbers and that would be terribly unfair to a player like Brandt who deserved it but owing to injury was denied for not having eye-popping numbers.

I hadn't considered any of the freshmen for center, primarily because I couldn't find any evidence that they had been used as centers on their various national teams. I thought Williamson would go back to center (she was bumped to wing when Kessel returned) and that Piazza and Pannek would stay at center as well. But then I get a headache considering the rest of the combinations...

probably the safest bet
however Piazza could return to being a wing with Pannek
or Williamson could return to be a wing with Piazza
that's why my post of Potomak as a center
... that and the opportunity to enjoy a review of the FF
:)

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

I think Potomak is like Cameranesi in that she could play center and do a great job there, but she's also a mighty fine wing. There is more than one right answer for players like them.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

Gophers schedule is in like a lamb and out like a lion with UND and UW. I can't help but think this is the year the program slips. Its deep, but had a heckava time with UW who didn't lose much. If that's true, I do think its likely the Gophers come charging back in 2017 with Amy P joining her sister.

I agree, was basically thinking the same thing. It will be interesting to see it develop. Coaching staff will have to manage a developing and large roster. Hoping for significant development from quite a few players. Who is ripe to improve the most? Potomak's 2 goals in the frozen four really bode well after I thought she slumped slightly for much of the second half last year. Williamson looked much better to me after moving to Piazza's wing. I'm hoping Pannek and Wolfe take significant steps up after good seasons. Baldwin could be a force if she can take another step or two.

I think we're hoping for Dani Camoranesi to be somewhere around the best forward in the country!

Anybody have any thoughts on the goaltending situation?

How big a contribution are the freshman going to make and how do the frosh compare to UW?

The job is there for the taking for Sidney Peters. It's her time. I don't know enough about the freshmen goalie to comment on her chances.

I would give the slight edge to Wisconsin's recruits because of Norby, who I think will likely win WCHA rookie of the year (possibly national ROY as well).

That's an Olympic year. Based on how she finished this season, Sarah may not be in maroon & gold for 2017-18.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

you girls should see if Timothy would be willing to swap his tickets at LaBahn for your tickets at Ridder, I know he wants to watch a Natty champ this year, and then you could follow the team you think will win it

the schedule isn't much different than last year, compare that to 2013/14 where they started with WI, UND in the middle, and cupcakes at the end. IMO, it is better to have the opponents get better as the season goes, you want them playing their best hockey at the end, not sitting around waiting for the NCAA like in 2013/14

apparently you girls are hiding under your beds, http://www.gophersports.com/sports/w-hockey/spec-rel/061616aab.html and from what I hear she's a power forward, when I watched partial games at the IHF under 18 she seemed an excellent puck handler, and was named one of Canada's 3 best

and also McMillen is a Riveter http://www.gophersports.com/sports/w-hockey/spec-rel/061616aaa.html, and Cameranesi was the 1st forward taken in the NWHL draft (3rd overall) and Stecklein taken 2nd overall http://www.gophersports.com/sports/w-hockey/spec-rel/062016aaa.html

no reason to turn in your maroon and gold for Cardinal & white, Gophers are taking back WCHA titles and making it 3 in a row

They are just sandbagging. Kessel will get another 2 months of eligibility in 2017 and save the rodent season again.

She did sign with the Riveters of the NWHL http://nwhl.co/amanda-kessel-joins-nwhl-with-riveters/.
That does complicate things a bit but it is Frost we're talking about. ;)

Folks who know women's college hockey know how good Wisconsin is going to be next year with who they have coming back and who they have coming in. It's not sandbagging to say that Minnesota and everyone else is going to have their hands full with them next year.
