Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Unlike the defensive zone issues, there hasn't been any sort of pattern that this game fits into; it was just one of those nights.
One of those nights where the opponent wanted it more and went out and took it. Props to them.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Holy cow, they lost to und?? Is something up, few players sick...?

Yup, plus Potomak is off the the 4 nations cup so at least 2/3s of the first line gone or playing hurt. As much as I hate the way they have been playing the game the last few years the ?'s are a reasonably skilled team and nobody is going to have a gimme up there.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Hey Go4phans, my best friend had his 50th birthday last night. So I could only catch updates on collegehockeystats.

"Gophers could not capitalize on a five-minute power play" and "UND scored three second-period goals, including two by Dufault in a NINE-SECOND SPAN" (emphasis added).

What happened?

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

UND beats the Gophers? Hmmm? I too thought ND lacked top end scoring talent this year. Their best "D" and probably MVP was on a plane to Sweden. That hurts ND more then any player from the Gophers missing. Nice win by the ND "Who". No question in my mind............... Wisconsin is the best team in the country.

That certainly is possible but not a sure thing at this moment, we'll have a better idea by Pearl Harbor day.

It was a trap game like the women get every year. On road at a tough team. UND as a matter of fact. Have an easy game the first night. Top frosh out. All the signs were there (almost posted something on it yesterday).

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

how Dufault pushes McMillen into the boards and falls (who is carrying the puck) and doesn't get called for it
then picks up the puck and scores

so you see, it's not only players who screw up, when referees miss calls it can have a big impact on the game

nether-the-less:
From the Bob SandIsInMyRear interview of Potomak:
"At the moment, you have a chance to win four national titles and never lose a game."
well, I guess that's still possible, but:
Really? 8 games have been played and you are asking about an undefeated season

it's kinda nice to lose one early, with all the cupcakes they have been playing, it's nice to get the troops focused on what is really important
it's a long season

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Yep, they seem to lose to a hyped up team with a stellar goalie that gives them fits almost every year. It just makes 2013 all the more remarkable. Sure was nice watching both games at the Green Mill the last two nights, although it did upset one Timberwolves fan who couldn't understand why we wouldn't let the bartender switch the TV to the basketball game at 8:00. By the end of the game the Wolves fan said that was quite a hockey game and he was sure the Gophers were going to tie it up. Me, too.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

The no penalty call on Dufault? Classic Nosee Doocy. He really should retire.

The officiating was atrocious, and while the consequences worked to UND's advantage, I'm not sure the overall set of calls was really tilted in their favor; the no-call on Dufault was a done deal before it became apparent that they'd score.

Both calls against UND in the first period, the checking from behind and the tripping call on Kayla Gardner indicated a tightly called game. I think both were correct, but a lot of times the latter would go uncalled and the former only draw two minutes. The rest of the game, though, was a free-for-all and Doocey and Spivey let mayhem reign. That worked to UND's advantage, as they are happier with a physical game than Minnesota is, but the lack of calls went both ways.

And for what it's worth, I've heard a rumor that Doocey is retiring after this year. I found that surprising, since the evidence suggests that he retired three years ago.

******y is still reffing? Shakes head. So far I cannot complain too much about the reffing, excect for some quick whistles last weekend. I'll never understand why the ref behind the play will blow the whistle on a potential cover up when they have no physical way to see if the puck is actually covered or not. The ref out front can actually see the puck, let them make the call or get your butt around to the front of the net.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Some nice goals...appears as though Dufault's second goal was a deflection off the defenceman...

And it is clear the Gophers should have gone on the power play for the check thrown on the first one. There was no way everyone in the building didn't see that. Open ice, check the puck carrier & knock her down, one would expect both refs saw that.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Sorry Hannah, but I'm almost relieved to hear that, because she just hasn't been Brandt-like. It's another sign of just how special she is that she can average two points a game even when she isn't right.
Really hoping with the short break #22 can get back to 100% for when the Beavers come to Ridder.

Just to clarify, by "some nice goals", I meant on both sides...specifically, Dufault's 2, Menke's and Cameranesi's.

Not arguing the "non" call either way, just commenting on the shots. Both of Dufault's and Cameranesi's were powerful wrist shots and beautiful to see while Menke made a nice play to get past the defender so she could break in on Leveille who seemed a bit out of position to her left...possibly a little too concerned about the second UND skater to Menke's right.

With respect to the topic of shots it is shots made with authority like this (Dufault and Cameranesi) that I have mentioned more than once over the past few years that have been sorely missing, for the most part, from UMD's arsenal. And if someone can't shoot then maybe they shouldn't be playing D1 in the first place but at the very least the mechanics can be taught and should be at this level to those that need it...to those who mysteriously find themselves playing D1 without possessing this skill...(although I'm not sure that the attitude behind that kind of shot can be taught).

Sadly, for lack of a better word, and as I have mentioned before, I've been told that this never happens...that when they get to D1 it is expected that they can shoot. So, I would ask what happened during the scouting process? Was this minor detail just overlooked? And when you "discover" that you've recruited some players who can't shoot the solution is to what...ignore it?

UMD has certainly missed the boat on this to their detriment over the last several years.

So again, 3 great shots made with serious authority and just beautiful to watch.

What do you figure the odds are that Dufault and Cameranesi could be enticed into putting on a shooting clinic at the Amsoil for the 'Dogs this season, if required?

I think once you get past a certain number of "perfect" players in a recruiting class that are strong across the board, there will be players that do many things well but also have holes in their games. For example, Nina Rodgers has one of the best shots of all the Gophers, but she's not one of the better skaters. I'm assuming that the staff would make developing her skating a priority. Similarly, UMD must have opted for some players who were very good skaters but didn't shoot the puck that well. I believe that most teams do work on shooting drills, either as a full team, or in individual work outside of the full practice. I've watched players working on their one-timers with a coach or a teammate, and I've also seen them do the drills where most of the net is blocked off and they have to pick a corner. If the world's greatest coach chose not to practice shooting, she likely had reasons that were beyond what poor fools like I can fathom.

As for a shooting clinic for the 'Dogs, Cameranesi's brother wouldn't need to travel far. The UND announcer got confused and started calling her by her brother's name (Tony) at a certain point on Friday.

Nope, was not thinking you had.
I actually have been impressed with the dogs for the games I have seen, I think the shooting thing will fix itself (if I participated in the poll guessing I would have put BSU ahead of UMD and UMD ahead of UND from my early impressions - I am learning I probably am wrong on that but it is after all guess work. I hope to see UMD back at the NCAA soon & hope that the WCHA will become a 3-way race again. The problem is what it has been for at least a decade, not enough super talent to go around. That means some players who are very good in some areas but not in all. If The Bulldogs lack snipers now I expect it is an issue that will be fixed via recruiting, although BSU seems to have an solution for wining sans snipers.

I thought maybe I was nuts but I thought Nina has a deadly shot, maybe I'm not nuts. I'd be interested to see her one on one as in a shoot out. Yeah, she is not fast enough & has a issues with her skating but I hope the coaches can work some of those out. She has a huge upside. I think she is better so far this year so I have my fingers crossed.
