Kelly Pannek looks to me like she's got some pretty good leadership abilities in addition to her hockey talents. She may wear the 'C' some day.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

The games this weekend weren't huge just psychologically and for rivalry reasons. They, as well as a potential rubber match in two weeks, will be important if both teams make it to Durham. Watching all four games, the ability to match lines is something both coaches have taken advantage of, and it's made a big difference. Having the last change in a national semifinal is something they both want.

After watching the second period of today's game, I came away feeling that BC is the only team that can stay with either Minnesota or Wisconsin. No one from the ECAC is going to scare anyone from the West. Quinnipiac is having a great season but the conference is weak and they haven't been pushed all that much this season. The speed, offensive creativity and push through the neutral zone turning defense to offense is something we don't see in the ECAC at the level that Minnesota and Wisconsin showed today. Scary good.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

It was legit. She covered the puck for a good second before tossing it into the corner.

Saw the video on that one also. It looks as if she puts her hand over the puck then suddenly realizes what she did (she starts to lift her hand off it) & quickly swats the puck away. Probably instinctual but they made the correct call.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

ya, thank God the NCAA doesn't rank the teams based on record AND attendance. with that stat you surely would have won another NATY in 2014.
are you for real? i'm sure you can come up with something else that will show MN is better than BC.
keep them coming. it's pretty hilarious.

Doesn't it seem a shame that the top team in the country, working on an undefeated season, can't get more people to come to the rink to see them? That's what it's about.

And by the way, I'm posting on an internet forum so how "real" is that. ;)

I have more faith your fan base. I would think that the earlier start time might be a little more family friendly (I've seen that dynamic at LaBahn) plus isn't the game at TCF an alumni game? I would think someone who is interested in women's hockey would be more apt to go to senior day against Wisconsin than an exhibition game, even though I understand the novelty of it. I would be surprised if the game doesn't draw over 3,000.
Just under 3100.

Thanks for the east west analysis.

Did anybody see why Milica McMillen was called for roughing after the Sarah Nurse goal?

You can't see it on the telecast. The announcers didn't notice anything until after play resumed and the Gophers were shorthanded. They never questioned it at all.

Nurse fell down as her teammates were busy celebrating a non goal, McMillen was in the area, and the referees weren't watching. They likely figured they were skating to the scorer's table for a review anyway, so may as well call a penalty while there. The best I can do in trying to explain zebra thought processes.

maybe they had meant to give her 4 on Friday but decided to spread it out.

I would like to add isn't it a shame that ANY of the top Eastern Womens hockey clubs (Quinny, Clarkson, Northeastern, Harvard etc) will only draw 300-500 fans on average to their games (per USCHO Stats).

I have a theory but need confirmation.
does the band show up to all of the MN WI games? I believe that the more chaotic the atmosphere is the more fans you will attract.
college kids aren't looking for someplace to plant their butts for 2 hours on a Friday night or Saturday. they want action.

2pm games on Friday don't help anyone for attendance...parents or student fans.

MN almost always has a band; Wisconsin usually does not.

There have been better seasons in terms of attendance in the East. Dartmouth used to average about 1,000. I think Cornell has had some good years. UNH used to have a good following. The problem at any of these programs, East or West, is that interest seems to wane as soon as the program drops off a bit. I don't know why, but I wish I did. I think it is a very entertaining product.

CrazyDave and anyone else can confirm but I believe Minnesota has had a band at every game this year but one. Even during holiday break we had a truncated band there. Yes, the band contributes hugely to the atmosphere.

Getting college students to show up is like pulling teeth. We've had some marginal success this year with some free pizza promotions and the like but it's tough. Truth is, a major foundation is families with young girls (hockey players) and young girls hockey teams. It's inexpensive, family friendly and safe.
The fact that Ridder is appealing to the eye and a shrine to women's hockey helps a lot! And, as ARM mentions, there is a lot of pressure on the team to maintain it's excellence.
