Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

No, no, it won't. I guarantee it. I will always hate the Sioux with an unfathomable passion.
You're saying that with a skewed perspective. There's a reason why there's a certain...dullness in our fans' feelings toward the likes of Michigan. It's because they aren't in the same conference. Once that changes, the feelings will change - eventually. Depending on how the future scheduling shakes out, MN could go several years without playing UND at all. If Hammy is right, the school wants to keep its home game total up near 20 per season. That means only 4-6 road games per year, and that will lessen the odds considerably of regular games with the likes of UND who will demand an even swap of home games in any arrangement. If MN isn't playing them every season, the intensity will diminish just like it has with other schools.

Let's put it this way. I still hate the Blackhawks with a passion.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

I predict that it WILL dull your feelings toward UND over time. The simple fact of the matter is the meaningful games with them will be fewer and farther between than they are now. A random non conference series in November simply won't generate the same level of hatred and vitriol as a conference tilt or a battle at the X in March with a trophy on the line.

And thanks to the smaller conference size, it's almost guaranteed that MN will have to face UW and/or Michigan every year or two in the playoffs. That'll increase the hatred considerably.

Thats my thought as well...

The UM/UW rivalry will be as big as it gets in college hockey.. Not like its not right now, heck in every column i've ever read its in the top 2-5 range as it stands..

EDIT: Imagine if the Gophs could ever put together a competitive football team! Now that would be sumpin eh

Let's shift the focus to this rival and this weekend.

Keys to the game for both teams?

For the Gophs:

1. Keep your cool, no boneheaded penalties, no retaliations..
2. Show up for 60
3. Set the pace early
4. Keep working the forecheck

If you're MN, don't wear your Halloween deer costume.

Again, it's not the same if they aren't in the same conference/division as your own team.

I could yap about hating HE teams all I want, but it doesn't matter much because MN almost never plays any of them, so any "hate" I proclaim to have regarding them is nothing more than a mindless vocalization that has no application due to the lack of regular matchups.

If you go back far enough, there was a time when MN players absolutely hated the players and teams in the northeast. Why? Well, there used to be an interlocking schedule. Nowadays, thanks in large part to budget-minded athletic departments wanting to maximize home games and gate revenue, we almost never see those teams anymore, so in the rare event there is a game with one of them, it's more a curiosity than a hatefest.

As for this weekend, MN just needs to maintain its focus. They have the advantage in pretty much every meaningful category, so as long as they don't come out flat or play stupidly, they should be fine.

Those **** preppies :P

You're absolutely right tho! That ended on the spot in 1980 for some unknown reason :)

For Wisconsin:

1. Don't score own goals (Ramage).
2. Play heads up defense.
3. Score on Patterson (great goalie).
4. Succeed on special teams.
5. Play smart.
6. Frosh are maturing quick but play MINN you got to show it.
7. Rumpel needs to play both nights.

I'm probably missing a few still.

#1, 1A, 1B, 1C and 2-5 are MOVE YOUR FEET

whenever you play Minnesota you're playing the best skating team in the country (possible exception of BC), so don't stop moving your feet EVER. think of it as playing the Red Wings and you're the Hawks.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

1. Give it 110%
2. Leave it all on the ice
3. Play as a team, not as a bunch of individuals
4. Respect the opponent, don't take them lightly
5. Out of control physically, in control mentally
6. Don't take dumb penalties

I hear ya brother.

Hawks fan here and I still HATE the NORTH Stars.

Couldn't possibly care less about the Wild... or the Dallas Stars for that matter.

Some hatred does fade though coz as a Packer fan, I used to loathe the Cowboys in the early 90s as they stopped us year after year in both the regular season and playoffs. Now I just have a general disdain for them as we no longer have meaningful games against them - just like Bakunin was saying. You're both right.

Yeeep missed the big one, haha.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

You're not a Packer fan tho right? Or did I misunderstand you last week?

You misunderstood as I am a Packer fan. When I said I couldn't respect what you were saying about the Packers, it's because you were saying nice things and you are, I assume, a Viking fan. I was giving you crap.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

I think this UND thing is overblown. Badger Bob and Herbie was about as good as rivalries get.

that's what I've read re: Badger Bob and Herbie the intensity was unreal (add to that they didn't like each other) and while it certainly seemed #1 when I started watching in 84-85 I've read that the rivalry cooled a bit w/Woog and Sauer as they were friends and there wasn't the sniping about recruiting or Badger Bob Style implementation of foreign PP ideas, etc. so the press had less to hype re: hate between the teams

And I totally agree w/the poster that said UW recruiting more in MN will naturally inflate the rivalry. the 1990 NCAA champ team had plenty of minnesotans on the roster and I remember quite a bit of jawing back and forth on the ice between these two teams back then (mostly good natured I'm sure;),

I specifically remember Duane Derksen the following year in 91 making a big glove save on a goph, and as soon as he caught it the goph skated around the back of the net, Derksen came out of the crease jawing at the guy and followed him around the back of the net jawing and bobbing his head...the crowd loved it

the hatred was palpable in the stands

Wait. You think Brooks was opposed to foreign playing styles?

The root of the Brooks and Johnson hatred is rooted in Johnson's recruiting strategy. Mariucci wanted Brooks to continue his focus on in-state recruiting and he assumed Johnson would do the same in Wisconsin. Bob didn't and that caused a riff. Also didn't help that both were extremely competitive.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

I think one aspect of the UMinn/NoDak rivalry that cannot be a part of the UND/UW rivalry is the old upstate/downstate history. Until the last 35 years or so, Minnesota's hockey consisted primarily of the Mpls area teams and those from the range and Warroad, Roseau, Baudette area. Kids did not go away during high school to play USHL and graduate in a different city with players who used to be adversaries. Shattuck did not even have hockey. The kids going from Warroad and Roseau and range towns were inclined to have a us/them attitude toward Edina and other twin cities powers. I think that transferred to college, and it was natural for many of them to identify with UND as a small hockey power, just as they had been growing up. It was an upstate/city kind of rivalry that carried over to recruitment and play in college. UMinn got a lot of great players from the small towns up north, of course, but UND had strong ties there. And old Canadians, too, of course.

But with more and more programs in the state, the numbers game started to take its toll. And with elite leagues and year-round play, top level players from former rivals were often playing with each for a team none of them had a history with.

The thing that UND and UW have in common is simple: gophers were made to be hated.

But the old rivalry triumverate of UND/UM/UW will be replaced by UM/UW/UMich, which will be bigger than ever. Sadly, for UND.
