You might want to cover this guy.....

There are probably some pretty smart people among your two clans. Is it theoretically possible that you both get swept? I mean, using some kind of time/light relativity mumbo jumbo that an ignorant Sioux fan can cling to?

Not without disrupting the space-time continuum.

That doesn't mean it can't. The jump from HS to WCHA is the biggest jump he has made yet. He has been awesome thus far, and I expect him to be just fine in the end.

We'll see. It's not like any more tape is going to show teams any more. It all comes down to executing on the ice. Kyle always seems to put himself in the right position. His hockey IQ is unreal. As teams adjust, so does he.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

Rau is something special.. A shark on the ice with great Instinct.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

That would be the opinion of many fanbases, but not the Gophs nor the Sioux. (no offense to the Badgers, it is what it is).

The Goph/Sioux rivalry is on a whole different level. My family has had season tix before I came into this world, i'm 42 and I cant name a single Goph fan that thinks otherwise. But I do think the Badger/Goph rivalry will grow into that during the Big 10 era.

not even during the Herbie vs. Johnson years?

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

It'll be interesting to see how his points go as there is more and more tape available.

saw the state tourney via stream last year, Rau, along with 2 jrs for Duluth East stood out as head and shoulders above the rest not named LaBate;)

I think this UND thing is overblown. Badger Bob and Herbie was about as good as rivalries get.

Agreed. Early 70's it was Tech. Late 70's it was the Badgers. Starting in 80's it became the Sioux. Badgers never stopped being a rival, but lately it has felt a little force fed. Like the media has tried too hard to fan the flames. I think that will change with Big Ten. Teams will start hating each other even more, then so will the fans :D

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

you guys are raining on the parade here. eff the sioux

rats and badgers #1;)

That day is coming very soon... Im sure the Badgers and Gophs will easily find away to hate eachother to epic proportions when we're in the Big 10 :)

And I only "joined" this sport in the early 2000s, so I only have the WI-MN rivalry as an NFL thing, with college hockey second. But from the first day I saw a UND-MN game, I hated the Sioux. Hated. HATED.

Anyway, the Rau-ser is indeed something special. And he SHOULD only get better with experience. That's friggin' scary. His 1-on-4 on the PK (!!!!) against UND was unbe-f*ing-lievable.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

not even during the Herbie vs. Johnson years?

Herbie hated Johnson for going the CJHL route and not recruiting instate, so those two had a solid rivalry.. When the '4 game set rivalry" between the Gophs and Badgers were implemnented there were countless polls asking this very question, and it was UND/UM by a landslide. Even the round table discussion with Woog and company last year they discussed this, each one of them said the UND/UM rivalry was the consensus #1. in my humble opinion I just dont think the Gophs fanbase gets up for the Badger games enough to really compare the two YET.... I do think the UND rivalry will be a missed one (for me anyway), but now that Wisconsin is recruiting in state alot more I think MN/WI will have the best by a landslide and the fighting canucks will be a thing of the past...

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

Rivalries depend on the relative strength of teams and how often they play each other (total matchups as well as games of significance with conference titles, playoff titles, and seasons on the line in the NCAAs).

Through sheer coincidence, MN and UND have found themselves closer in the standings and playing more meaningful games against each other over the past 20+ years than MN and UW have. Once MN departs for the B1G with UW, the only opportunity for a significant matchup with UND will occur in potential NCAA tournament games. The absence of a shared conference with UND will take some of the spark out of the rivalry between the schools.

With the B1G only having six teams, the games against the other five teams will have major significance in the conference race - so that should amp things up a good bit with our hated rival to the east. It should also re-insert some animosity with the likes of Michigan.

I agree that the WI/MN rivalry will grow once the conferences get blown up. Won't wane my hate for the Sioux, though.

I predict that it WILL dull your feelings toward UND over time. The simple fact of the matter is the meaningful games with them will be fewer and farther between than they are now. A random non conference series in November simply won't generate the same level of hatred and vitriol as a conference tilt or a battle at the X in March with a trophy on the line.

And thanks to the smaller conference size, it's almost guaranteed that MN will have to face UW and/or Michigan every year or two in the playoffs. That'll increase the hatred considerably.

No, no, it won't. I guarantee it. I will always hate the Sioux with an unfathomable passion.
