Minnesota Twins Offseason 2010-11: Well, at least we have the outdoor stadium...

Re: Minnesota Twins Offseason 2010-11: Well, at least we have the outdoor stadium...

Jebus crispus you're an angry mofo. I'm sure Bremer is the only homer dope in all of announcing, right?

Certainly not the only, but definitely one of the biggest. Besides, "Other people say stupid ****" isn't much of a defense for someone saying "Every professional sports team could learn from the Twins" because their wives made a quilt.

Buy out Kubel, and try to resign for cheap.

Not saying they should or shouldn't resign him, but you're crazy if you think signing a 90 RBI guy--Kubel or otherwise-- for less than $5.5 million is even a possibility, especially with this free agent market. They tried the same thing two years ago with Nick Punto, and ended up having to way overpay(way, way, way overpay) just to get him back.

Not to mention that I can't imagine power hitters lining up for the opportunity to play at Target Field.

Re: Minnesota Twins Offseason 2010-11: Well, at least we have the outdoor stadium...

While the team failed miserably at clutch hitting, it doesn't change the fact that the pitching staff gave up 5-6 runs per game.

FWIW, MN got two hits with RISP (one hit was a single with a guy on 2nd that did not score a run) last night.

They were 0-13 when I shut the TV off according to TBS. I saw a stat later that said 2-18 for the series.

This team wasn't designed to be a pitching powerhouse. It was designed to score runs. Even giving up 5-6 runs per game they should have won at least one of them this lineup.

Really?

There is some talent on that list that if the Twin's management is serious about truly contending for a championship, they better at least be making some sort of effort to sign.

Take a guy like Carl Crawford. He'll be expensive, but he'd be a terrific addition to the Twins outfield.

The Twins could use a true ace at the head of their starting staff, and one or two professional hitters who are tough outs at the crucial times of the game.

The Twins should put all their money in a bucket and go try to sign Cliff Lee. They need to look at a hitter like Matsui of the Angels for a one year rental deal.

There is a lot of talent on that list that could go a long way towards making the Twins a much better team next year.

Considering you're never going to be able to match the Yankees' lineup 1 through 9, it's not surprising that you're being curbstomped by them regularly if that's your plan. Teams have had success because their younger, cheaper pitching outdoes the Yankees' older pitching. When Detroit beat New York in 2006, they held the Yankees scoreless for 20 straight innings of games 2 to 4.

That's fine. But you still have to score to win. And you have to score hitting the baseball.

If you want to go the unearned run route you need the kind of pitching the Phillies have.

Re: Minnesota Twins Offseason 2010-11: Well, at least we have the outdoor stadium...

You imply that you would get rid of gardy, who do you replace him with?

Bobby Valentine would be my first choice if Gardy were to go. Although I'd rather he goes back to the Mets.

For the record I'd prefer to keep Gardy, but would understand if management felt otherwise.

It would cost, and this is being conservative, at least $50 million/yr to sign Crawford, Lee, and Matsui. And that's not even counting the extra money you'd have to pay to get them to sign with Minnesota. There's no way that's happening.

You're not going to sign them all. I was just posting that contrary to DL's one word comment on the free agent list, there were some players worth pursuing. These were a couple of examples of players who can fill some holes in the Twins roster (outfielder with speed and power, ace, professional hitter).

Also, I'm not so sure there's a big premium associated with drawing players to Minnesota anymore.

Of course there are some talented guys on there....but none of them are going to sign here. The "yuck" for was when I looked at the list after I crossed out Derek Jeter, Jimmy Rollins, Jayson Werth, Cliff Lee, Jake Westbrook, Carl Crawford, and Vladimir Guerrero.

This might have been true with the metrodump, but I doubt that it is true now.

As I said on GPL, the administration isn't even going to fire a single neuron that would lead to Gardy being let go. The guy essentially has a lifetime contract.

Re: Minnesota Twins Offseason 2010-11: Well, at least we have the outdoor stadium...

I'd like to see the Twins identify some young power pitchers and sign them as free agents. Yes it is going to cost money. We have a bunch of soft tossers who aren't going to last more than four to five innings under post season stress. Yes the Yanks expose them better than most, but I don't think we'd fair any better vs. the other playoff teams either most years.

I'd love to see them resign Thome, shop Delmon, shop Valencia. Doubt anyone is dumb enought to trade a promising arm like we were, but it can't hurt to find out. Hope Mauer, Morneau, Hudson, Cuddy, and Kubel can stay healthy. Send Punto. Repeat send Punto. We already have two others like him that I'm sure Gardy will roster.

Gardy does a great job managing a team over the course of a season. Let's hope he starts to develop a bit with the in game management, but it isn't that easy. But let's be honest. It could have been Connie Mack managing the Twins and my one year old cocker spaniel managing the Yanks and it would have still been a sweep. There is a HUGE talent gap between the two teams. Especially when you consider the Yanks weren't ever going to use their 4th/5th pitchers. Take a look at each team position by position and the only edge the Twins get is Mauer and Delmon. Some of the other positions are close, but many are not.

Hopefully Texas will fair better.

Re: Minnesota Twins Offseason 2010-11: Well, at least we have the outdoor stadium...

I have no interest in Matsui.
Resign Thome.
Add some speed somewhere. If they can pull off Crawford (which I say there is about a .01% chance of), awesome. I'd be fine with letting Kubel walk and getting Revere into the outfield some next year to add some speed to the lineup.
Figure out a way to remove Span's head from his ***. We need the Span from 2 years ago, not last year. And I don't care how many pitches he takes in his first at bat.
Trade Delmon when his stock is high. He is horrible in the field, and while he may end up being a great hitter, I think we need a better fielding left fielder. There isn't a place for Delmon to DH if Thome is back.
Let Pavano walk, he'll ask for too much money. If they can get him for a reasonable number, then go ahead and sign him, but I don't see it happening.
Lee won't come here, and I really don't know who else they'd be able to get that would be a #1.
Seriously consider trading Morneau. This concussion thing is very bad. He is probably one high and tight fastball or one knee to the temple away from being done for his career.
Resign Crain and Guerrier.
Tell JJ Hardy to suck it up and not be injured for half the year, so maybe he could try to find some kind of rythym at the plate.
Duensing to the rotation permanently, Liriano stays there too. Everyone else is fighting for a spot, bring in a free agent to fight right along with Slowey, Blackburn, Baker and possibly Pavano. Also, Give Gibson a shot right from spring training to make this rotation. None of this crap that we went through with Valencia, where he had to wait half a year to get his chance to tear up the big leagues.

Who would take Morneau's $15 million contract after multiple concussions and hasn't played close to a full season since 2008? I'd try to get Konerko.
Make Young the DH, I'd let Thome go or keep him as a bench player/pinch hitter. He would not be an everyday DH.

The problem is, no one will take Morneau, I think they're stuck with him.
