Minnesota Twins: 2013 Season Thread

Re: Minnesota Twins: 2013 Season Thread

Clean house. Morneau, Gone. Perkins, Gone. .....{looks at roster} Crap, no one else of any value.

Re: Minnesota Twins: 2013 Season Thread

I don't mean to alarm anyone...but the Twins were already losing before noon.

Re: Minnesota Twins: 2013 Season Thread

Me too. Big shame, as I don't think we'll get what he's worth with what he will do for whoever he ends up with.

/MN sports cynicism.

He could go 1 for 67 with his new team but as soon as he hits a homerun, the typical MN sports fan will proclaim how much of a travesty it was that we got rid of him. Usually something along the lines of, "Guess we didn't need him!"

Just like we didn't need Gomez, Hardy, Liriano, Dickey, Cuddyer, Kubel, Nathan, Crain, Span?

Re: Minnesota Twins: 2013 Season Thread

I'd take cuddy and crain back. Hardy an all star but I'm not sold on it being more than 1 season.
A few of us had this conversation a few days ago at a bar...A team of former Twins would be World Series contender.

1. Span LF - .260 AVG, .668 OPS, 23 RBI, 9 SB
2. Gomez CF - .303 AVG, .889 OPS, 42 RBI, 13 HR, 21 SB
3. Hardy SS - .253 AVG, .724 OPS, 48 RBI, 15 HR
4. Ortiz DH - .331 AVG, 1.048 OPS, 65 RBI, 19 HR
5. Cuddyer 1B - .337 AVG, .975 OPS, 52, RBI, 15 HR
6. Hunter RF - .306 AVG, .784 OPS, 42 RBI, 6 HR
7. Ramos C - .309 AVG, .906 OPS, 16 RBI, 4 HR (20 GP)
8. Valencia 3B - .230 AVG, .785 OPS, 8 RBI, 4 HR (21 GP)
9. Punto 2B - .255 AVG, 12 RBI, 3 SB

Bench:
Alexi Casilla
Jason Kubel
Ben Revere
AJ Pierzynski

Starting Pitchers
Francisco Liriano - 9-3, 2.00 ERA, 80 SO in 12 Appearances
Matt Garza - 5-1, 3.22 ERA
RA Dickey - 8-9, 4.77 ERA
Jason Marquis - 9-4, 3.79 ERA
Kyle Lohse - 5-6, 3.47 ERA

Bullpen
Joe Nathan - 30 Saves, 1.36 ERA in 41 Appearances
Jesse Crain - 2-3, 0.74 ERA, 19 Holds in 38 Appearances
Grant Balfour - 24 Saves (0 blown saves), 1.72 ERA in 26 Appearances
Pat Neshek - 2-1, 2.84 ERA in 31 Appearances
Kevin Slowey - 5-3, 4.00 ERA in 18 Appearances
Craig Breslow - 3-2, 2.97 ERA in 30 Appearances
LaTroy Hawkins - 3-1, 3.20 ERA in 39 Appearances

Yeah, I'm sure most teams can do this, but I think it kinda puts it in perspective. For the most part, that is the Twins team from 3-4 years ago. There is a hole at the bottom of that lineup with Valencia, Ramos and Punto, but the rest of that lineup has some **** impressive numbers for the first half. Also, I'd take that bullpen any day of the week.

Re: Minnesota Twins: 2013 Season Thread

Did the Twins really give Rivera a chair made out of broken bats as a retirement present? That's fantastic.

Gardenhire was not very eloquent while reading the presentation speech from his note cards for the chair. It was, however, a fun intro to a very boring game.

The other part of this equation is that these players are partially doing as well as they are due to who they are playing with. Pitchers getting more run support so not every appearance is do or die, or they aren't already 6 runs behind. Hitters having better hitters around them, or more men on base to make each of their AB's more valuable.

That lineup being put together on the Twins is no guarantee that they would perform anywhere near that level. Especially in the pitchers case where Anderson would find a way to screw them up. ;)

So there are a bunch of guys on the Brewers (Gomez), Orioles (Hardy), and Rockies (Cuddyer) that are better than Mauer & Morneau? I think there are are only two guys on the entire Brewer roster I've even heard of. I don't count Chris Davis, because Hardy was playing well long before he went crazy. And who plays for Colorado besides Tulowhatever...because he's always hurt.

And the Mets were awesome last year. They practically won that Cy Young for RA Dickey without him even needing to pitch!

There is a little guy by the name of Carlos Gonzalez who plays for Colorado. Not very good though...just look at his numbers this year:
BA: .302
2B: 22
3B: 6
HR: 25*
RBI: 64
SB: 16
SLG: .610*
OPS: .980*
TB: 216*

And before you say "oh, but he gets to play at Coors Field"...his numbers away from CO are significantly better than at home...oddly enough.

* Leads National League

Of course, beyond Tulo, CarGo, and Cuddy...Colorado is awful. They are talking on the radio here about trading Cuddy for some pitching.

Rockies are a far better team than the Twins and its not just Cuddyer. You not knowing the players isn't valid reasoning.

They have Carlos Gonzalez who is a perennial all star and might be leading the NL in HR. They have Tulowitzki as you mentioned who is no more injured than say Morneau yet Tulo was an all star. Todd Helton, Dexter Fowler are other field players you should have heard of. They also have 2 pitchers with 9 wins and another 2 with 5.

The Brewers have the NLs best bullpen. They have several quality bats as well. Braun, Segura (all star), Gomez (all star), Aoki. Even Lucroy is hitting well at catcher.

The Twins having 2 players isn't going to convince me of much as far as protection within the lineup for guys.

Dickey is a 1 year wonder. How's he doing this year? Oh right, under .500 and ERA well over 4.
