I find it hard to believe that Moorhead would take a run at this if they didn't think they could play DI hockey. I would welcome another school to DI with open arms regardless of where it was located. I'd be thrilled if it was in MN.

Ms. Moorhead (Home of the Dragons) has red eyes. How perfect is that!?

Of course, they are downstream from Grand Forks and something in the water up there makes people think the NCAA is completely flexible on their decisions. ;)

Nope, the Red River flows north. Moorhead is upstream from Grand Forks. :p

That's a lot. The goal all along has been a 37 million dollar endowment. Now, AD Doug Peters is saying that the goal is to have 80 percent of that (29.6 million) lined up by the end of the year.

It is a lot. IMO, if they find the money to do this that job up in Moorhead/Fargo will be one of the better jobs in college hockey. For goodness sakes they are slating the same salary as Sandlein up in UMD. Good luck to them.

I have no idea how difficult it is to obtain the necessary permission, but there is a limit to what state employees can be paid without getting a waiver from the department of employee relations (which has been re-named, but I don't remember what it's called now,) it's based on a percentage of the governor's salary. So, in order to pay a coach that kind of money, they'd have to get the necessary waiver. Of course, like so many other state rules, this doesn't apply to the University of Minnesota.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe they can do this because the money will not be used by taxpayers.

That is my understanding as well. Because the money will be from the private MSU-Moorhead hockey endowment, the state max salary provision would not apply.

Pffffttt.... No big deal, even Houghton is shelling out that kind of money now-a-days. Everyone knows MTU is where the money is at in the WCHA - it's Mecca for college hockey coaches.

You may be right. I have no knowledge about using private endowment money for hiring.

D-I hockey program ‘making great progress’

It has been more than two months since MSUM athletic director Doug Peters stated in a press conference that the Dragon athletic department was exploring the possibility of adding a Division-I hockey program, and it seems as though the program is on track to being a reality.

“We’re making great progress,” Peters said, referring to the department’s goal of reaching $37 million toward the hockey program.

Rumor: From what I have been told there is a person living in the area who has a boat load of money who is willing to help make this happen. I asked if this program was a done deal? He said close but obviously anything can happen. Basically he would be suprised if it didn't happen.

Any additional news.? I heard a not reliable rumor that the WCHA was holding a spot for them. Will we hear anything before the end of the year?
