Minnesota State Mavericks 2015-2016 regular season thread

Well that was ugly. Not going to win many games giving up 6 goals. Not going to blame goalies on every goal but there are a few that needed to be stopped. We need someone to step up between the pipes.

Fewer penalties would help, too. But yes, one of the goalies needs to step up and win the job.

Well a split is great but there are definitely some areas that need to be cleaned up. Penalties and power play. That said I thought there were some phantom calls for both sides tonight. Looking forward to next weekends games.

I'd be surprised if he's ready. He still was in a walking boot two weeks ago. To a non-medical mind that seems pretty quick.maybe I'm wrong though.

Scratch that, just saw Shane's article. Hes expected to make his return tomorrow. My medical expertise fails again.

Who gets the nod in goal tonight?

I think it will be Huggins. Not a good time to use a freshman, even though he has played on Friday nights the last couple of series.

This is the time for Huggins to step up and become "The Goalie"

And he didn't. Not that it matters when you score zero goals, but goaltending is a huge question mark going forward.

Re: Minnesota State Mavericks 2015-2016 regular season thread

I'm not sure what to think watching this team anymore. I get that we lost a lot of important pieces but we didn't lose enough that we should be playing the way we are. Goaltending I was worried about before the season and am not surprised now that its a problem. I am surprised by out lack of ability to maintain puck possession, and our transition game isn't what it could be. Thankfully we got a split but we got lucky really. We were a mere 4 mins away from going 0-6 in nonconference and being shutout 5 times. Need to use the next couple months fixing what problems we have because now winning the Minnesota Cup is a must if we are to have any chance in improving out pairwise for an at large bid. We will see what this team can do over the next few weeks.

I'm with you on this. Sure, Leitner was an assist machine for 4 years and made the PP run smoothly, but we also returned 5 different guys who had hat tricks last year, plus one of the nation's top scoring defensemen. You'd think putting the puck in the net wouldn't be a problem.
Perhaps Palmquist is really the bigger loss from last year. We've been bad at getting the puck through the neutral zone, where Palmquist's skating and passing abilities made that look easy at times. We have a solid d-group, but maybe not one with Zach's particular skill set.
And I miss Willy. Not just his goaltending, but his sort of goofball nature, and skating around during media timeouts, bobbing his head to the band! It just made the games a little more fun.

Re: Minnesota State Mavericks 2015-2016 regular season thread

You're right that leitner was an assist machind, but guys were burying it when he got it to them. That, to me, is what's missing. And frankly it's what's baffling to me. It's not like they aren't getting good chances and it's not like we aren't getting wide open nets to shoot at. Honestly, how many odd man rushes have we had this year and misses the net by 2 feet on the shot? Or open nets missed by a foot. Add in all of the posts that we've hit in key moments and you have a team that can't put up more than 2 goals and gets shut out 4 times.

I really do still think it will come. It does need to turn relatively quickly though. And I like to see our goalies playing with a lead for a bit. The game changes when you're down. D-men take more chances. You get put in more bad positions when trying to make things happen, etc. It could be a whole different season if we put one in the net early in some of these games and can play more resonsibly. I guess we won't know until someone steps up and puts up some goals.

It is a little bit of a mystery, and I hope just a statistical anomaly, but I do remember thinking Friday that Gervais has missed the net more times in 3 weeks than he did in the previous 3 years. But then he knocked in a nice goal on Saturday, so maybe the numbers will start regressing to the mean soon.

I sure hope so. Realistically, the conference as a while is shaky ooc....especially us. We really need to power through the conference at this point for the sake of our pairwise.

It appears to me that MSU is powering through the Conference with ease...I have been surprised by their lack of offense compared to last year though. I think they will still come out on top this year.

Re: Minnesota State Mavericks 2015-2016 regular season thread

Well, we made it to the break, and still have a handful of defensemen standing! Thoughts on the first half?

For me - Pleasant Surprises - Pawloski, obviously. Also, Huntebrinker looks better every week. And I thought Schmeisser was bound for a career as a 7th defenseman, but he's seized his opportunity and given a real solid effort so far.

Less Pleasant Surprises - Power play isn't good. Still a lot of work to do on that. It isn't just that shots aren't going in. I don't think we're getting the movement or the net front presence we had in past years. I was also expecting more goals out of McClure. To his credit, he's still active, with his 54 SOGs tied for second on the team, so maybe puck luck will even out in the second half, and he'll start getting his goals.

Anyway, they did a nice job battling back from a tough start, and I'm looking forward to what should be an exciting 2nd half of the season. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays!

Re: Minnesota State Mavericks 2015-2016 regular season thread

Anybody have any info on Pawloski? After that pileup in his crease, where he ended up with people on top of him and his legs folded back underneath him, he looked like he was hurting. Then he got knocked down with about 40 seconds left, and when he left the ice after the game he was doubled over like he was in pain.

I'm not sure how to feel about the first half. We are in a good spot but those 4 losses to UNO SCSU have left a bad taste in my mouth. Granted both teams are good but it has just felt like we have struggled to score all year. The power play is as bad as I have seen it in all my years. I know we had some lean years on the PP but that was in old wcha and we didn't have the talent we do now. Need to move the puck faster and work it down low. SOG are great but don't rely on shots from the blue line.
Glad we get a chance to get healthy. January will be a huge month for the mavs, and winning the north star cup would be extremely helpful. The boys deserve a break.
