Minnesota State 2022-23: Life After McKay

This is getting really hard to deal with. 42 shots on goal against 13, and lose the game. It has happened too many times this season. Every team doesn't have Glenn Hall in goal. 23 years as a season-ticket holder, and I've never been more frustrated. I just don't know what else to say.

The weird part of this is that it's a Mankato-Only problem. We're doing just fine on the road, with 9 straight wins. Can we decline home ice in the playoffs and go on the road instead?

Somebody must have declared this to be a "Screw Mankato" weekend. Missed penalties and disallowed goals. Never have seen so many bad breaks.

I saw the Mavs split a series in Princeton when a lot of their top guns from the past few seasons were freshmen or still in juniors. They didn't make the NCAA tournament that year or the year before. Those teams reminds of this year's team.

I think we're also going to lose a lot after this year. I'd be surprised if Livingstone or Hirose are back next year. This is Carroll's last year of eligibility. I also expect Furry, Sandelin, Borchardt to move on. Maybe even Pavel.

Sorry to not be sympathetic and troll you guys, but welcome to college hockey officiating reality. Ever listen to the Joe Shawhan hour over the last few years? Why do you think Tech pep band plays "3 Blind Mice" when the zebras step onto the ice?

Well said LH! I wonder if the MSU pep band has that tune on their set list?

I generally think officiating is pretty decent. It's not perfect, but I guess I don't expect it to be. I'm going to write this weekend off as being a really, really bad one for this crew. From lax officiating for 57 minutes to then calling two penalties they hadn't called all game to not calling a blatant hold on a 5-on-3 to overturning 2 goals, it was bad. Players and coaches have bad weekends and so do refs. This one just directly affected the outcome of a game. Add to that, the women's game had some calls (and a ridiculous waived off goal) that turned a win into a tie. This was a rough weekend.

That's what bugged me about the officiating. It didn't cost us the Friday game (A bad turnover in OT did that), but it was 57 minutes of uncalled holding and interference, followed by 2 minutes of questionable calls, followed by reverting to no calls on an obvious holding.

Of the 2 overturned goals on Saturday, I thought they got one right on the Silye call, and I thought the call on Borchardt was terrible. When a goalie jumps out of his crease to lunge into a player, I'm not sure in what universe that's goaltender interference. Of course, based on that goalie's histrionics and whining all weekend, he must think he's never let in a legitimate goal all year. He wasted everyone's time with the Friday review where no one was within a foot of him. I've changed my mind on the punishment for an unsuccessful coach's challenge. I'd now like it to be a 5 minute major. This could spare us a lot of the stupidity we've seen this year.

I don't know if the CCHA has made goalie interference a point of emphasis this year, but there have been several bad "goalie interference" calls where an opposing player gets pushed into the goalie and it gets called. There have been more than a few good goals overturned because of theatrics/overzealous officials. Then when a team is trying to intimidate a goalie (looking at you last weekend BSU) no call. There has to be a happy medium there somewhere.

Like the idea of strengthening the penalty for a failed coach's challenge. At least a bench minor for delay of game. Maybe one for bellyaching goalies, too. The St. Thomas goalie should get an Oscar nomination for his performance last weekend.

Question: If a coach uses a time out early in a game, does that mean he then cannot make challenges later on?

A coach can challenge without an available TO but if he loses the challenge, one of his player go to da box, you know, two minutes by himself, and da coach feel shame, you know, and den he get free.

With one codicil - if the replay is inconclusive because of lack of camera angles or equipment issues, it's a wash. I've seen more than a few challenges end up like that and still cost the timeout. If the replay proves the challenge was wrong, then assess the penalty.

Thanks to BGSU for their solid win against Tech last night. That win certainly puts the Mavs in a stronger position to take the regular season title. Can't wait for the Feb 23-24 games against MTU. That should be a fantastic hockey weekend! Get your tickets now folks!

Am I starting to sound like Dan McCarger?

Well, Tech takes over first with a win over BG this afternoon. Since Tech is off next weekend, if the Mavs game care of business in Bemidji, they can re-take first and give themselves a little cushion for the final regular-season tilt with Tech in Mankato. They control their own destiny for keeping the #1 seed for the conference tourney.

Well, this weekend's mission was accomplished. Friday's win over BSU put the Mavs where they need to be...ahead of Tech. Now they need 3 points next weekend to clinch the cup. It won't be easy but I like their chances. The Mankato arena should be rockin' all weekend!

Please guys, score some goals this weekend!

We've scored 5 or more goals in a game 8 times this year, and 7 of those are on the road. Weird year.

Should be a good series. It has been a while since the the top two teams get to play each other in the final regular season series for the Macnaughton.

If they can get here, with the weather expected through Thursday. Highways will be closed, I'm sure. Can they get them open in time?
