Minnesota @ Michigan State: 12/6 & 12/7

Re: Minnesota @ Michigan State: 12/6 & 12/7

It wouldn't be an MSU thread if MGoBlue didn't come in and needlessly trash State.

I think in this case one can shoot the messenger. Although there is a modest amount of truth in the message ... unless MSU can put together some consistency over a month or so, or even two or more wins in a season over traditional opponents, these needless potshots from behind the blue wall will continue. It's gotten so obnoxious I've resorted to taking it to the repute-o-sphere.

Not much of a rivalry when you win each game by 3 goals. :D

I have the notifications set on my TV so I remember to watch these laughers.

Anyone know if the trophy you two played for in the College Hockey Showcase will be up for grabs? Don't remember the name of that one but I know the one between us is the Renfrew-Mariucci Trophy. Do they still even exist?
This is a good question. I know they wording is that both of the trophies (Minn/Mich and Minn/MSU) are awarded to the team "that wins the regular season series" between the two. So the last two years the Minn/MSU trophy was in play. As far as I know, they didn't start with the trophies until after Mich/MSU bailed to form the CCHA, so I don't know for sure what the plan is now that the teams are already playing for the Conference title/etc.

I go to the Don Lucia show every week, so I'll ask tDon on Monday.

Here is MY PREVIEW of this weekend's series.

Great job as usual, mnstateOfhockey! I agree 100% with what you observed in Saturday's Badgers game:

"I don’t know what others saw during that stretch, but what I noticed at the game and confirmed by viewing the game again when I got home, was that the Gophers had absolutely NOTHING going on the fore check during that stretch.

Not denying that the Gophers were also having struggles in their own end with sloppy passing and turnovers at their blue line that led to extended defensive zone play, but if you aren’t getting any sustained pressure in the offensive zone, it puts A LOT of pressure on your defensemen. That is exactly what was happening during that 18 minute stretch of the game."

I'll be watching the Gophers' forecheck very closely on TV this evening - hopefully we'll see improvement in that part of their game.

Re: Minnesota @ Michigan State: 12/6 & 12/7

I had a chance to watch the 4-1 MSU win over Princeton last Friday night. I came away from the game surprised at what I saw from MSU. I expected to see a struggling offense that's ranked 37th in the NCAA, but in fact I think Sparty actually matches up fairly well against the #1 Gophers.

What impressed me about the Spartans was their surprising team speed, physicality, good transition game, and aggressive/heads up D that blocks a ton of shots (MSU/208/12 Gs, Gophers/155/14 Gs). Hildebrand was impressive in net and made several stellar saves in that game too. And the talented freshman line of Ebbing, MacEachern and Haag really has excellent speed and puck movement and I expect this line to swarm the Gopher net and challenge Wilcox all weekend. I was also impressed with the hustle from the Chelios bros. (especially Dean), and Greg Wolfe and Micheal Ferrantino (he's got some wheels!). Even though their special teams are equally as crappy as the Gophers, it looked like they started to find their mojo a bit and posted 4 PPG for the weekend sweep over Princeton.

Despite MSU's poor W/L record, they have the potential to be a very good team and have been strong on home ice so far this season (5-2). Despite the absence of a breakout skill player, they show good team energy and have several players that can score. I expect Sparty to match the Gopher's intensity and speed on offense and put lots of pucks on net. IMO if Hildebrand finds his zone in net this weekend, MSU has the ability in their first B1G weekend series of the season to steal a W. Go Gophers! Rah! :)

A little surprised Marshall is out.

I know he has had a few miscues lately but I'm still surprised.

Re: Minnesota @ Michigan State: 12/6 & 12/7

After viewing this one game from the press box, Marshall will be back in tomorrow. Parenteau's injury looked bad; sure hope it's not of the season-ending variety.

After two the Gophers are getting (by far) the better of the chances, despite their inability to capitalize on the power play. I like their game plan and their overall play on the smaller rink, and am optimistic they'll break through and win the game.

That game shouldn't have reached OT. Congrats to Sparty for sneaking away with two points.
