Minnesota hosts Ohio State: 1/17 & 1/18

Re: Minnesota hosts Ohio State: 1/17 & 1/18

So from what I'm reading you guys believe if you had an stadium large enough there and you were hosting Wisconsin you could match or beat Michigan's hockey attendance in the Big House when they hosted the Spartans?

I'd say a better shot if we were hosting UND, as their fans travel more, but yes. I think we would.

There has been talk of us having one in the Horseshoe in conjunction of a Blue Jackets game. Us one day, Jackets the other but sadly our hockey fan base is lacking compared to state's like yours to make it worthwhile. Plus the Jacket's want it to be all on OSU's dime, they don't want to help pay for any of it so what are you gonna do?

Admittedly, we seem to be spoiled (so to speak) with our hockey fandom. To us, it seems normal, and it is sometimes surprising when seeing other arenas/crowds at times. For example, the (retired) poster known as GreatLakerMohawk, RPI fan and Sabres/Maple Leafs reporter, came out here for the WCHA Final Five a couple years back, and flat-out stated that the Thu play-in game drew more attendance than the whole ECAC drew for their whole tournament.

Heck, we've had 19K (IIRC) for a high school playoff game, and it wasn't even the championship.

Re: Minnesota hosts Ohio State: 1/17 & 1/18

OK, I've been to one outdoor game, and it was a fun experience, but no thanks I'm not a real fan. Maybe I'm spoiled, because the location of my season tickets at Mariucci are nearly perfect. I was fairly optimistic about my seats at the Bank too...close to center ice, 20 rows up...but I after sitting down I quickly became very disappointed. Just too far away from the ice - and too low - to get a good view of the puck and what was going on, especially the puck battles in the corners. So I decided to move up and watch from the top of the lower bowl and found a seat (folding chair) in the concourse area. That was a little better because it was higher up, but then again it was even further away distance wise from the ice surface.

As for attendance, I wondered how they accounted for all the people going in and out, having their tickets scanned, as they allowed until 8PM. I ended up with a few extras, so I went out and came back in again three times, between periods of the women's game and then in between the two games, in an attempt to sell them. I wasn't surprised that on such a cold night there weren't any buyers; just plenty of other sellers trying to unload their extras...but for folks like me who had their tickets scanned several times, did each scan count as another body in attendance? Like has been mentioned above, I suspect the 45,021 figure (which they flashed up on the video scoreboard during the game) was based on the number of tickets sold, not how many were actually there. Still, a very good crowd, especially considering the freezing conditions.

All in all I really did enjoy the unique experience - and the Gophers' win - and it's a night that I'll always remember. But count me out of any future outdoor games, no matter who they're playing. It just made me appreciate Mariucci that much more. :)

I seriously doubt it. I think 60K is about the upper limit here. Especially for those of us who agree with D2D. Been there, done that, don't need to do it again thankyouverymuch.

Make it a late Sat afternoon game against UND (WI would be second choice), and people like me would prob go. I think we could hit 6 digits.

Re: Minnesota hosts Ohio State: 1/17 & 1/18

Our fan base has been growing here and in large part to having a NHL team though most of the hockey fans here before that didn't know a puck from their a**. We have a new assistant AD who oversees hockey and he's a pretty big fan of the sport so FINALLY we've been getting a lot of promotionals going and more media attention.
For good opponents attendance can be good, we had over 8000 last Saturday for Michigan State. Weekday games the B1G scheduled have been a bust!
Can't wait to see what figures we'll have when you guys come to town. The more the merrier!

We had 45,000 Gopher fans there yesterday. Get 45,000 UND fans to come, and we could easily top 90,000. Not to mention, that matchup alone would draw more Gopher fans.

I walked around quite a bit and saw only one OSU fan in attendance.

Re: Minnesota hosts Ohio State: 1/17 & 1/18

Were you there?

@gopherstate: @ToddMilewski Just short, but the 45K was legit. Was 90% full for the second and third periods.
I was there. If you can tell the difference between 42-43K and 45K just by looking that's pretty impressive. Why would they magically decide to track the attendance differently for one game, and differently than they do for football games?

Not saying anyone can tell the difference, which is why I said I don't know if or how they count actual attendance.

The Gophers weren't in charge of this event, Intersports was. Are you certain Intersports doesn't track actual attendance for all their events?

Being there like you, I don't think 45,000+ was a stretch by any account. And if it were only 42-43K, not sure why that's become a discussion point. Pretty darn good for attendance out of essentially one fan base. I counted one OSU fan, and I only saw him because he was on the kiss cam.

Watching the game on FCS. Minny taking it to Ohio State and then OSU scores a softy. Typical BS. If I had a nickel for how many times Ive seen that Id be a rich man!!

Re: Minnesota hosts Ohio State: 1/17 & 1/18

Solid sweep by the Gophers this weekend.

The 2nd line was flying around, keep those guys together tDon.

Grats to Warning on the hat trick too.

Re: Minnesota hosts Ohio State: 1/17 & 1/18

SWEEEEP!! Sam Warning lit the lamp 3X and was the Mad Hatter tonight, as the Gophers beat THE Ohio State University, 4-2 for a weekend sweep. It was the first Gopher hat trick in over a year and it came at just the right time to permanently change the momentum of the game in the 2nd period despite a solid SOG effort by OSU. OSU blocked shots tonight and actually outshot the Gophers in the 2nd period 15-7. But Sam I AM scored off a nice tic-tac-toe setup by Condon and Kloos while sliding into the paint and then got a PPG/GWG 7 min. later for the hatty, his first career hat trick. The "NEW and IMPROVED" 2nd line of Warning/Condon/Kloos seemed to find their mojo tonight and were speedy on the ice, logging 3 Gs and 3 As.

Seth Ambroz finished off the scoring for the Gophers in the 3rd and is now tied with Warning for the Gopher goal lead at 10. Unlike in past seasons, the Gophers haven't really had a "go to" guy or line this season, and are scoring by committee this season as 39 players in the NCAA already have 10 Gs or more! It helps to have the #1 freshmen scoring class in the nation as well. The Gophers improved to 17-2-3 and extend their NCAA leading unbeaten streak to 10 games. Adam Wilcox was stellar in nets again for the Gophers and in EVERY game seems to come up big, making key saves when needed at exactly the right time to give the Gophers a chance to win.

Next week: The North Star College Cup at the X as the Gophers take on St. Cloud State in the battle for MN college hockey supremacy. The winner of the Purple Cows/Dawgs game will play the winner of the Gopher/SCSU game. The Mavs are surging lately at 9-3 in their last 12 games. Go Gophers! RAH!:)
