Minnesota hosts Northeastern: 10/23 & 10/24

Re: Minnesota hosts Northeastern: 10/23 & 10/24

Nice W guys. Hope we can give you a better effort tomorrow.
(especially in goal).

Re: Minnesota hosts Northeastern: 10/23 & 10/24

Congrats gophers on breaking the 1 goal milestone.

Meanwhile in Ann Arbor........

CHAOSTEAM on Ice™ is going strong. Almost at 4 goals allowed per game.

Once NU replaced their hologram with an actually goalie, that game was pretty even.
Ruck looked really good. It's hard to believe he has been riding the pine. If anyone can post video of that save he made on Fasching about 9min into the 2nd period they should do it. Was hard to see on the scoreboard replay, but from what I could tell it was one of the best saves I've ever seen in all my years of watching hockey.
EDIT: It was Kloos, and I see someone already did in the Northeastern thread.......ridiculous

And if NU had anything that resembled a PP the score would have been a lot closer. That 5:57 of straight man-advantage was painful to watch, even as a Gopher fan.

As for the Gophers - Schierhorn looked really good, great to see some guys get their first college goals, and great to see MN jump all over a team right at the first puck drop. Still a lot to improve on, but tonight was another step in the right direction as well as a notch in the win column.

Saw some better things although the PP wasn't one of them despite potting one. There is potential. Unfortunately, they are stuck with Cammy and I don't think tDon will be giving him an earned rotation to wearing a suit rather than hockey gear once per weekend.

Did they change the overhead camera angle? My first thought was that the puck may have crossed the line while he was catching it, but when they showed the overhead view, the camera was more behind the net instead of looking straight down over the crossbar and goal line, so the cross bar appeared to be several inches behind the goal line. Don't know how they are supposed to accurately tell if pucks in the air are over the line with that angle.

Re: Minnesota hosts Northeastern: 10/23 & 10/24

The Gophers looked a little better tonight than previous games in their 4-0 win. Thankfully they met a sieve in net named Derick Roy who looked like a statue in the crease allowing 3 goals in the first 4 shots. Ryan Ruck came in and made several spectacular saves, including a diving save on an open net shot by Kloos with his blocker glove hand:eek: (about 1:20 into the video). My only comparison might be seeing a guy at a Cubs game at Wrigley field catch a screaming Sammy Sosa foul ball with his bare right hand. And it was beet red afterwards.

Overall, I thought the Huskies looked out of sync at times last night with their poor PP efforts (0-6), errant passing in transition and the O-zone and had 15 shot attempts blocked by the Gophers. Despite NUs sloppy play at times, the Gophers were fortunate Ruck didn't start or this game could have been very close.

Once again the Gophers can't seem to hit the net, launching 19 out of 54 attempts wide (35%). Good to see the Gopher FR contributing tonight with 3 in the first period (Novak/PP, Glover, Sheehy). Schierhorn who stopped 23 was indeed the player of the game and earned the shutout with a solid effort in net.

The 4-0 score aside, I thought the Gophers played way better than in any of their previous games. Still much to improve on, but it was a solid effort all around. We'll see if they can duplicate or even improve on that effort tonight.

FYI, NU at Minnesota is listed for a 9 p.m. (EST) start on Fox College Sports (FCS) Atlantic. It's channel 300 on Verizon FiOS. Don't know about other carriers.

Re: Minnesota hosts Northeastern: 10/23 & 10/24

Gophers off to a nice start in tonight's game. Far from over, but they are playing so much better than last weekend you get the sense they're starting to play with some confidence. If they can keep on doing what they're doing and get the sweep, we might look back on this weekend as a turning point.

Re: Minnesota hosts Northeastern: 10/23 & 10/24

Gophers regressed in the 2nd period and let the Huskies back in the game - reminiscent of the way they constantly backpedaled against UMD. The 3rd will be a very important period for the Gophers' morale.

Agreed, but NU also had their best period of the weekend, and from the sounds of things maybe their season.

The new color scheme hurts my eyes... And I never have issues like that.

Re: Minnesota hosts Northeastern: 10/23 & 10/24

Good luck with the rest of the year Gophers. We lost the series but we seem to have found our goalie in time for conference play, so it certainly could be worse. See you back in Boston next year.
