MN triples their yearly offensive production this weekend.
Some interesting facts on this weekend's series you should know:
1) Northeastern and Minnesota are meeting for the 13th and 14th time this weekend with the all-time series tied 6-6-0. NU has won three of the last four meetings, including the last two at Mariucci. They beat the Gophers on the Huskies home ice last season 3-2. The Huskies are 2-4-0 all-time on the road against the Gophers.
2) Northeastern and Minnesota are notorious for playing in close games against each other. In all 12 games, nine have been settled by only one goal and four required OT.
3) In their first three games of the season, Northeastern has put 135 shots on net (avg. 45 SOG/game) which is the most SOG in the nation for team's that have only played three games.
4) Northeastern has held opponents to just 18.33 SOG per game in three games, the fewest in the nation thus far. The Huskies' 26.67 shot differential per game is currently #1 in the nation.
5) Northeastern returning players racked up 249 points last season (81%), the ninth highest in the nation and 2nd in Hockey East entering this season.
6) Through three games Northeastern has won 53.9% of its faceoffs (96-of-178), which ranks 12th in the nation. Senior Mike McMurtry has won 75% of his draws (15-of-20), which is tied for fourth in the country and tied for first in Hockey East.
Jim Madigan's coaching style and systems are almost polar opposites to Don Lucia. Northeastern plays a fast style of crashing the net, very physical on the walls, and a relentless forechecking and backchecking scheme making it difficult for teams to break out of their own zone (OH! Canada!).
The Huskies return most their players from last season, except Mike Szmatula who will join the Gopher roster next season. Kevin Roy racked up 44 pts last season (19-25-44) and scored the winning goal in their one game against the Gophers last season. Their D can score as well. Last season, the Huskies D were tied for 24th in the nation with 73 points (18 goals, 55 assists), and started this year with five points (one goal, four assists) through three games.
As in the Vermont game, the Huskies are the kind of team that can give the Gophers fits all night with their fierce backcheck and forecheck making it difficult to transition into the offensive zone. Lucia said practices have gone very well and focused on breakouts in practice all week. I echo Driftryder's sentiments...the Gophers better be ready. Go Gophers! Rah!![]()
The No. 19 Gopher Hockey program continues the 2015-16 campaign this weekend with a nonconference series against Northeastern at Mariucci Arena. The Gophers and the Huskies open the series on Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. CT while the series finale is set for Saturday, Oct. 24 at 8 p.m.
A Tight Series with the Huskies
In a series that dates back to 1963, Minnesota boasts an 8-6-0 all-time record against Northeastern with a 7-2-0 mark on home ice. The two nonconference foes have played extremely tight for most of the series with eight of the last 10 games being decided by one goal -- four in overtime. Last year’s 3-2 loss in Boston marks the only meeting between the two programs that the current Gophers lineup has seen with Justin Kloos (one goal) and Connor Reilly (one assist) leading all active Minnesota players in points against the Huskies.

All time series is 6-6-0. Gophers are 4-2 against the Huskies all time on home ice. One correction on my post: "8" of the last 12 were decided by one goal.![]()
That's correct Jan. 3, 2009, all seasons are listed by the year the season began. The historical record at NU hockey archives designated it with a "dh" (whatever that means) but it is not listed as having been played in MN.![]()
That was the Dodge Hockey Classic, a holiday tournament at Minnesota. The game was played a Mariucci and NU lost on a power play after goaltender Brad Thiessen was assessed a delay of game penalty for firing the puck into the stands
If you get the B1G network you have the stream for free. BTN2Go
Maybe you don't have the B1G...
Nope! Northeastern doesn't offer anything besides basic cable and HBO unfortunately. I had assumed just buying BTN plus would work but now I'm unsure.
And if you look at the 08-09 NU schedule the game is listed correctly. Not sure why the archive isn't the same. http://www.gonu.com/schedule.aspx?schedule=68&path=mhockey
Boo. Guess it's a radio kind of weekend then. Thanks for your help and good luck.
