Minnesota hosts Mankato State of Minnesota : 11/15 & 11/16

I knew Mankato fans weren't all bad.

Oh hey. I thought you had a big tilt against perennial-powerhouse UAH to worry about. Make sure you crown your team champions and complain how no one respects you if you sweep that mighty team. May as well throw up a banner or two to add to the participation one.

Oh hey? Way to keep it casual.

So many things wrong with this post.

1. We are #3 in the country. We are playing the worst team in the country. I won't be watching this series, let alone worrying about it.
2. I have never crowned anybody anything. You may have me confused with the Archbishop of Cantebury, or the media at which Dennis Green was directing his ire after the Bears game.
3. There are now 7 or 8 participation banners in the HBNHC. What additional banners did you have in mind?

Williams has been bad, but I think he'll get it back...eventually. But maybe not this year. Defense hasn't helped. We miss the smarts, leadership, and physical stay-at-home play of Elbrecht more than we thought we would, and Josh Nelson got hurt and may be out for a long time. Offensively, who knows what's been wrong? Blueger is noticeably better, but he's about it among all the returners. Leitner hasn't been close to last year's performance. Missed a couple games with back problems. Don't know if that still lingers, but his dropoff has made our power play pretty mediocre so far. Still have hopes for the long haul this year, but I'm worried we won't be competitive this weekend.

Any idea who will start for Josh Nelson while he is out?

There's really not much of an option at this point. We were skating all of our healthy guys last weekend.

27-Stern ... 7-Palmquist
28-Jutzi ... 11-Flanagan
4-Buchanan ... 6- Nelson

If worst comes to worse, Mat Knoll can play some defense as well.

Thank you sir. I am putting together a preview and wanted to make sure I get the lines and pairings correct. Let me know if you see any mistakes after posting :)

Don't bother trying to get lines "right". I don't think that we've had any of the lines stay the same during any given weekend. Part of that is injuries and part is Hastings switching things up. For example, one weekend Palmquist went from the first line D to third line D the next night back to first line D next weekend.

No worries, I just do it to get a sense for what lines we may see this weekend. I doubt the lines I posted will be exactly right for the Gophers either. I just don't want to make the mistake of posting a lineup with someone injured, suspended, etc.... on it. :)

Here is MY PREVIEW of this weekend's games.

"I think both games will be close, as they always seem to be between these clubs, but I think the Gopher’s speed on the big ice combined with the Mavericks recent defensive struggles will prove to be too much for the Mavericks. That’s why I am predicting a Gopher’s sweep this weekend."

I agree - hope we're right!

Hope so too :)

7 or 8? Wow, that's something to really be proud of. But I'm sure bucky fans will be jealous very shortly.

(yes, I'm making banner cracks on WI in multiple threads. Deal with it.) :D

Re: Minnesota hosts Mankato State of Minnesota : 11/15 & 11/16

I spent 2 years at MSUM when there when they were still DII. But by then I had been watching Gophers hockey since I was 5 and spent two years at UM first so I have a fondness for them and wish them when not playing the Gophers. I hope the bagging on their fans nonsense is behind us in the thread.

I will expect (but not predict) a sweep, but if that happens I still expect at least one game to be a nail-biter

Land Cows game day, let's play hockey!

Re: Minnesota hosts Mankato State of Minnesota : 11/15 & 11/16

Mankato has played us very tough the last few years, I think we are 5-5 against them in the last 10 games. They have a goaltender that has a 96% save percentage and 1.1 goals against. A sweep will not be easy.

Agreed. If Williams gets his head straight, he and Huggins could be quite the goaltending tandem.

Re: Minnesota hosts Mankato State of Minnesota : 11/15 & 11/16

Good win by the Gophers tonight with an asterisk. The Gophers applied a lot of pressure and totally controlled play for two periods like they were playing pond hockey. But the Gophers sat on their lead too much in the third period, looked out of sync, and were outshot by a resurgent Mavs team 16-6 who had 12 grade A shots compared to 2 for the Gophers. Fortunately, Wilcox bailed them out again with some HUGE saves in close. Condon and Kloos had very good hustle tonight, got pucks on net and combined for a G and 3 As. Mike Reilly's puck movement and shot selection continues to impress and now has 4 Gs which is ahead of Nate Schmidt's pace at this time last season after 9 games (2 Gs). The Mavs looked sluggish and sloppy for the first two periods, which was a surprise compared to the hustle and excellent puck possession they demonstrated last season when they made the NCAAs for the first time in 10 years.

But I expect the Mavs to regroup and come out with more intensity and physicality tomorrow night. Go Gophers! :) Rah!
