Minnesota hosts Boston College, 10/25 & 10/27

Re: Minnesota hosts Boston College, 10/25 & 10/27

I hate shootouts that decide a game but I don't see what the fuss is about this one. The game goes in the books as a tie.

We just hate SOs. We are rather stubborn about that. :)

I know I'm a broken record, but can anyone give an example of something like this in other sports? Something meaningless after a meaningful game. Do they do juggling contests after soccer games that end in a tie in any league?

Hey as long as it has no bearing on anything, there are people who do enjoy it. But, giving a team an extra point in conference standings? Dumb.

It's not popular with hockey purists. It had absolutely no point tonight. Would be upsetting if someone got hurt in the shootout for no real reason.

I don't want them either. Was it a big ten thing? Or a big ten-HE challenge thing? Maybe alvarez came up with the idea ;)

Incredibly entertaining game tonight between two very high powered offenses. This game really lived up to the hype with a pond hockey pace and world class skill...a thriller start to finish. Credit the Boston College Eagles, who roared back before a fired up Gopher crowd after two early goals by the Gophers from Mr. Hustle - freshman Hudson Fasching and Travis Boyd with a tenacious Rau assisting on both, and scored 3 Gs in 71 seconds to take the 3-2 lead after 1. Lucia noted postgame that the Gophers played too loose of a racehorse hockey style with BC in the first and lost the structure of their game.

The Gophers settled their defensive game down in the second, and Cammarata, whom I thought struggled and lost several puck battles early in the game, got his second G of the season for the 3-3 tie. Parenteau went out with an slight upper body injury, but Lucia says he'll most likely play on Sunday.

BC's D was stellar tonight, especially Mathison, who tDon commented "man, is he good...he should be playing at the Xcel Center". Johnny Gaudreau, who will no doubt be a Hobey candidate, picked up the first G on a PP and led all shooters with 7 SOG. Both goalies made key saves throughout the game and Demko was especially good in the third period as the Gophers applied heavy pressure outshooting BC 11-5. BC won the shootout in the fifth round, but the game is officially a tie. Bring on Sunday for the rematch. Go Gophers! Rah!:)

Coaches agreed on a shootout happening if it ended up in the tie. Mainly it allows MN to prep for the B1G conference where shootouts take place in tie games. Obviously BC is just doing it for courtesy and helping MN prepare. It's been done in some other series around the country too.

Indeed. MTU-UMD, and BSU-SCSU to name two.

Really great game. The pace all night long was neck-breaking. BC is always impressive with their speed of play; not just in skating speed but especially in decision making.

I think we started to see some of the Gophers' limitations in the 2nd period there, as BC was getting the better of the scoring opportunities and carried the play despite losing the period 1-0.
This Gopher team is great on the transition, solid in their own end, have D who like to jump up in the offensive zone, but vulnerable on the counter attack. They also struggle to put together sustained pressure in the offensive zone, and that was true tonight as well until late in the 3rd period when BC seemed to be wearing down.

I'm sure people will call me crazy for this given the history between Kloos and Cammarata, but I won't be surprised if that line gets broken up in the not-too-distant future. The reason being that they just don't seem to have the size and strength needed to put together those dominating "puck possession" shifts in the offensive zone. They are great moving up the ice and entering zones, but not so great holding zones. So seeing something like Boyd move to center that 2nd line seems pretty plausible to me. I don't think it was coincidence that late in the 3rd period tonight when the Rau line spent their whole shift in the BC zone that the next shift to come on to try to keep the play in there was the 3rd line.

The shoot-out was a great example of what is wrong with shoot-outs. Not only was it meaningless (no conference points, no PWR implication, no Big/HE significance, not counted in the record for either team = totally meaningless), but after the first shot we got to sit there and wait for a goal review...a great way to drum up excitement

I was disappointed when I first saw this was a Fri-Sun series, but after tonight I'm sure both teams will be happy for the extra day of recovery.

On the Kloos/Cammarata connection, I tend to agree with you but it might be a little early yet to split them up. Their chemistry worked in the USHL, but so far the same behind the back passes and puck possession isn't working here. I liked what I saw from Boyd tonight. He definitely improved from the Bemidji series and showed good puck movement and tenacity down low. His positioning for his goal from Rau's pass across the front of the crease was textbook. With the Shootouts, agreed...kinda anti-climatic and tDon pointed out even though it's a tie, the guys in the locker room felt like it was a loss.
