Minnesota High School Hockey 2012-2013

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2012-2013

The logistics would be a nightmare, but should Minnesota move to public (A, AA, etc.) and private state tournaments? I don't follow the other sports, but do the private schools dominate the other sports?
Private schools used to dominate do really well in football, but now they're just good teams.

With the USHL and those types of leagues becoming more noticeable, I don't think the private schools are as dominate in AA as they used to be for hockey. Kids that would have gone private for a better hockey experience (more experience?) are now turning to the juniors more than ever. So while the private schools are still very good, mostly, it's not like it used to be.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2012-2013

I don't think there are enough private schools that matter to have a privates only state tournament, but I wouldn't have an issue with an all-private section in both A and AA.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2012-2013

They were out of sight, out of mind in the single A tourney. Now the AA field could easily have at some point. Hill 4AA, ST 3AA, Benilde 6AA, and Holy Angels/Edina from 2AA.
And St. Thomas is that much worse than Cretin out of 3AA?

They used to hold a separate state tournament for private schools back in the day. I'm not sure they'd ever go back to it. The big driver is always going to be the state tournament, and no changes are going to be made as long as that remains highly profitable for the MSHSL.

EDIT: Also, it doesn't quite fit geographically, but you have to wonder if part of the deal in getting STA to move up involved being placed in Section 1.

That would suck for southern class AA hockey.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2012-2013

Cmon, someone has to go to the tourney to lose big in the first round!
Then they should take the Lakevilles out of section 1! :p
They've been decent the last few years. I don't think STA would have come out of 1AA last year.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2012-2013

All the schools that made up the North Metro Stars are co-oped with Osseo now, I believe.
I figured they combined somewhere but its hard to find that information.

Thoughts on this on setup:
SECTION 1AA: Dodge County, Farmington, Lakeville North, Lakeville South, Owatonna, Rochester Century, Rochester John Marshall, Rochester Mayo, Winona
SECTION 2AA: Bloom Jefferson, Bloom Kennedy, Chanhassen, Edina, Holy Angels, Prior Lake, Shakopee, Burnsville, St Thomas

Latest rankings per LPH. Somewhat surprised HM didn't get a single #1 vote - Edina is very good but hasn't played the toughest schedule and HM beat previous #1 BSM:

2 Hill-Murray
3 Minnetonka
4 Benilde-St. Margaret's
5 Wayzata
6 Duluth East
7 Burnsville
8 Blaine
9 Eden Prairie
10 Eagan
11 Elk River/Zimmerman
12 Grand Rapids
13 Moorhead
14 Bloomington Jefferson
15 Roseau
16 Cloquet/Esko/Carlton
17 Centennial
18 Prior Lake
19 Andover
20 Holy Family Catholic
