Minnesota High School Hockey 2011-2012

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2011-2012

Good grief, class A is just not competitive in the quarterfinals. I hope the AA action today is better.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2011-2012

Yes, just as SoH said. Which makes sense since Ralph was from Thief. He built his Little Ralph Englestad Arena for Thief's high school.

You mean this dump:

As I say frequently when I broadcast games there, it's likely the nicest high school hockey rink in the world. If there's a nicer rink that was either built for a HS team, or has no other team above HS level playing at it, I'd love to see it.

Yeah, that's it.

Not only is it nicer than every high school rink in the world, it is nicer than 90% of all D1 college rinks.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2011-2012

The arena in Warroad is rather nice as well.

What can I say - this state has great priorities. :D

...and after Maple Grove carried the play for the opening few minutes and had a 1-0 lead, H-M has taken a 2-1 lead after a couple of sweet plays / Maple Grove defensive breakdowns.

I expect all of the games today to be close. Wish I could watch the first 2. But since I'm going to the games tonight, I won't complain.

Good God is that a beautiful facility.

Adding Thief River Falls to the list of possible tourney destinations for next season...

Assuming that they also play youth hockey there?

EDIT: Just looked at the map and don't think I'll be able to convince the parents on that roadie. Still looks awesome though.

I like Hill Murray.

The CFO at my radio station is a grad, so I've kind of adopted them.

Yep, that's all they have, youth hockey and HS hockey. The World Jr's used it as the "B" rink back in 2005 when it was in Grand Forks. TRF is too small for a NAHL team. There are only two "down" sides of it - it's too big for almost everything. HS regular season games draw maybe 1000, which looks quite empty. The Section 8A Tourney is there every third year, and even that has maybe 2000-2500 in attendance, which is not even close to capacity. The fullest I've ever seen it is for basketball or wrestling tourneys. The other thing that's too bad is that their old rink was perfectly serviceable for that size town (and a better capacity). The "Huck" (Huck Olson Civic Center) was a classic barn:

Actually, I think it was more a choke job, or just nerves on Maple Grove's part. They've shown throughout the year that they can play with the best, but it being the program's first trip to state makes it a little tough.

It is nice to see Lourdes took it easy on New Ulm at Mariucci today.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2011-2012

Moorhead and Eagan 0-0 after the first. Moorhead hitting the eff out of everything, which isn't surprising.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2011-2012

Moorhead goalie must be a Roloson pupil. Pretty good at shaking off his helmet.

All Eagan in this period, but still no score.
