Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2011-2012
Re: STA and Breck playing up: I was having a conversation about those two and Hermantown. I'm willing to give the Hawks a bit of a pass since they; 1) are a public school; 2) have won only 1 state title and 3) their success is fairly recent. Consider, that since the AA/A split (1994), only 4 schools have won multiple A State Titles. Those are Benilde (2), Breck (4), STA (3) and Warroad (4). Compare to AA, where in that same period, 5 teams have won multiple State Titles - Holy Angels (2) Duluth East (2), Eden Prairie (2), Edina (2) and Roseau (2). So - in A, it's 3 of 4 are private (and one decided to opt up) while 4 of 5 in AA are public. Maybe the standard should be a second State Title in say, a 5 year period forces any A team to opt up the next 2 year cycle, then after that the MSHSL has to evaluate if the school prefers to play back in A. That's how I'd do it anyway...
It sure would be interesting since one of the schools made that decision on their own and one would be a public. Would Warroad have stayed AA if forced? Would Roseau have decided to not opt-up if Warroad was AA? What decisions would Breck and STA make 2 years later if forced to play-up?
