Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

They're fun to watch when they are good? This is a joke, right?

I've read several of your posts and tried to figure out what team you support, but all I've concluded is you're a little bitch when it comes to Michigan. Inferiority complex much?

Pretty much. Just think the state of Michigan's version of a St. Cloud fan

Gophers Coach Don Lucia has announced that Tommy Novak will miss the rest of the season w/ a lower-body injury

I didn't save the game. I can picture his leg going behind him after getting hit and knew it was a knee. What I can't picture is what led to hit. Was it inadvertent? Can't remember.

While this team is much deeper than last year's, this is still a big loss. Tough for Tom and hope he comes back next year right where he left off.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

Not sure of the specifics of the injury. But the team in my mind has decent top end talent, good heart (shown by them not dropping games they should win), but not a lot of depth. The issue in terms of depth was last year's class which brought in an entire 4th line plus benchwarmer or two. We just can't afford to do that again until this group clears out (and they won't clear out for four years). Also bringing in so many 4th liners at one time makes injuries a bit more painful. We really need some of the older guys to reach the potential they have not to date.

I was at Mariucci Saturday. When Novak went down I thought knee, but then when he was squirming on the ice he got up to rest on his knees. Given the way his leg twisted it could just as easily be his ankle. He didn't put any pressure at all on his left foot while getting helped off the ice.

1st in an improved B1G and 5th in RPI. I'll take it.

I thought the Gophers played the best they have all season in the first period yesterday. With a little better finishing they could have easily put the game away in those first 20 minutes.

Unfortunately the game isn't one period and they did not look very good the rest of the way. Gonna need a better 60 minute effort to have any chance at a sweep.

Good to see Cammie is making a few noticeable plays per game for a positive reason. He seems to be on the right track. A couple really nice feeds last night. Hopefully he can get back to the form he can play with confidence and consistency.

Yeah but with Novak out he HAS to step up and be better. He did make a few real nice plays last night.

Don't look now but Schierhorn has allowed 2 or fewer goals in 9 of his last 12 played. As good as the Gophers offense has been I didn't think they could realistically expect to do much in March/April unless his game got back to what it was last year. Still a lot of games left to be played but the whole team is playing better overall hockey defensively. On the offensive side even Cammy is finding the score sheet and dare I say is playing more aggressively on the forecheck. Reminds me of the spurt he had last year in the playoffs that he somehow lost at the beginning of this season.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

Finally got to a game last night. I'm always watching on TV, but I averaged 10 games a season at Mariucci up until two years ago. Didn't realize how much I missed it until tonight. So much fun, regardless of the great win.

Vera had a blast as well, and she is no sports fan. When money is a bit more plentiful in the household we're doing it a lot more often. Go Gophers!

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

Couple of thoughts - outside of a periodic meltdown (often due to running out of gas), things looking pretty good:

Schierhorn is playing very well. Kept the team in the game when things could have fallen apart. He got bailed out once or twice, but great effort in limiting the top scoring team in the nation to a weekend of 3 goals (including the fact PSU got more PPs than us).

While Kloos has been the racehorse that can score, Bristedt IMO has been the overall most talented player for about a year now. That second line will create tremendous matchup problems for opponents as he and VL have both taken their game up and meshed. And I'm less of a half empty guy on Cammy as he plays a different, playmaker role than others...outstanding contributions all weekend. He followed up a GWG with a simply amazing cross crease pass that was 3 inches off the ice and right on Bristedt's stick pretty much putting the game out of reach.

The third can represent a tough match up in MS and BG. Szmatula is becoming energy guy that makes things happen and Gates a supreme closer. Reilly's level of play will be the one question there. And although I think Clymer's label of the fourth as the best 4th in hockey is a bit over the top, that line does do an excellent job of zone control.

Clymer's call out of the defense was spot on - that that's made a huge difference. With Collins tightening up and Sadek turning the corner this year, the D is both deep and talented.

The Gophers have the fourth highest Goals average in the nation...a great departure from year's past where scoring was the team's problem. Especially impressive as we've got the toughest SOS of any team not in the NCHC.

On the topic of defense, I thought Steve Johnson was outstanding on Saturday.

Made it to both games this weekend and I thought the crowd we pretty decent too. Good atmosphere and props to the students! The student section was filled just about to the top within the first five minutes of the game both nights.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

Yeah. Johnson has really rivaled Bischoff for best D. I wouldn't be surprised if his name were called more than anyone else on D.

Agree, but I'm always puzzled by how a good number of fans arrive well after the game starts and choose to leave well before it ends, even when the outcome is far from being decided. Obviously not a priority for many to witness the whole game! To get a reasonably accurate assessment of the crowd size you need to look around no sooner than the later stages of the 1st period and no later than midway through the 3rd. I recall the days when it was pretty unusual for people to leave early, and when they did they stood out enough for the student section to shame them, "BEAT the TRAF-fic, BEAT the TRAF-fic!"
