Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

It's hard to think of it being an issue any time in the near future. The only year it was even plausible to be tested was the year the Badgers qualified with a 16-17-x record and the WCHA nearly put 7 teams into the tournament.

or was it a 17-18-x record and nearly 8 teams...I can't recall exactly

My wild guess is we're on a plane to the Northeast Regional (Manchester):

13 Notre Dame vs. 4 Minnesota
11 Cornell vs. 6 Western Michigan

Edit.;)

Fargo is sold out. Attendance doesn't matter as a factor there.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

Yeah, it seems clear we'll be in either Providence or Manchester. Just a question of who else is there.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

RPI difference between the #4 Gophers and #5 Mass.-Lowell? .0001

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

Had Wisconsin won tonight, Fargo almost certainly would have been:

UMD-Wisconsin
Gophers-UND

That would have been one hell of an atmosphere

There's potential for a similar attendance puzzle with the following fitting into two eastern regionals. Moy had Mass-Lowell in Fargo last week in his Bracketology.

ECAC Hockey – Harvard, Union, Cornell

Hockey East – Massachusetts-Lowell, Boston University, Notre Dame, Providence

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

Here's Moy's final bracket hot off the press tonight:

Midwest Regional (Cincinnati):

15 Ohio State vs. 2 Minnesota-Duluth
9 Penn State vs. 6 Western Michigan

West Regional (Fargo):

16 Michigan Tech vs. 1 Denver
10 North Dakota vs. 7 Boston University

East Regional (Providence):

14 Providence vs. 3 Harvard
12 Air Force vs. 8 Union

Northeast Regional (Manchester):

13 Notre Dame vs. 4 Minnesota
11 Cornell vs. 5 Massachusetts-Lowell

I was close. He swapped Western Michigan for Mass-Lowell to cover attendance issues.

Not sure why New England continues to get two regionals. With just six teams coming from the east, its just much more likely they will likely they will not be crossing the country. OK...I know why.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

That stat is helped by Atlantic Hockey sending the only western team in the conference. You only have to go back to last year to find a tournament where the majority of teams came from the east.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

Brackets are set:

Cincinnati
1. Denver vs. 16. Michigan Tech
8. Union vs. 9. Penn State

Fargo
2. Minnesota-Duluth vs. 15. Ohio State
7. Boston University vs. 10. North Dakota

Providence
3. Harvard vs. 14. Providence
6. Western Michigan vs. 12. Air Force

Manchester
4. Minnesota vs. 13. Notre Dame
5. Mass.-Lowell vs. 11. Cornell

I don't know if the committee would have done that.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

I'm not too concerned about what time they play. I'm more concerned with whether they can make it out of Manchester.

Don't tell me there's another Nor'easter in the forecast! ;) But first things first, I'm hoping the team is only focused on Notre Dame.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

Second observation: Ben Clymer drives me crazy! I've gotten to the point where I just tune him out when he starts rambling on and on. It's like he starts talking before knowing where he's headed with it and ends up talking nonsense and not making a relevant point. Why the various networks can't find someone far less annoying is beyond me, /end of rant.

It is his incessant attempts to use a larger vocabulary to sound smart. Yet he misuses the word about a third of the time and ends up sounding worse than if he had stuck with a simpler vocabulary. Seems like a decent guy who has some decent observations, but his misuse of words makes him almost UN-listenable at times.

Didn't someone look at travel distance and success, and find that teams that tend to travel further have had less success?

Doug McLeod influence with a pseudo-intellectual twist. Ben would be fine if he just relaxed and stopped the redundancy.

Manchester is basically home ice for Mass-Lowell (40 min.).
