Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

Since my post just above I've been playing with the Pairwise Predictor and see the results vary depending on other results to be decided tonight also, specifically BC (who we beat and therefore want to win) and UND (who we tied and beat and want to beat UMD, who we lost to and therefore want to lose). Then in the conference it would help if Penn State won (4-1 against them) vs. Wisconsin (2-2). Anyway my amateur efforts show that we can finish anywhere from No. 4 to 6 depending on how these other games go.

Maybe someone who's more up on the PWR than I am (wouldn't take much!) would care to chime in.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

Yes, potentially.

The way I have it figured, for the Gophers to stay a #1 seed they need 1 of these 3 things to happen:

- BC beat Lowell
- UND beat UMD
- Penn St. beat Wisconsin AND Air Force beat Robert Morris

If none of those happen, The Gophers will almost certainly will be playing UND in Fargo.
Thanks, didn't see you posted before I added mine above. I hate having to cheer for the Hawks, but I'd rather not go to Fargo and play them in front of their huge crowd (they are hot all of a sudden also).

So go EAGLES!

I know there's the proverbial, got nothing to play for. But the guys have been pretty uninspired. When we went to PSU and were fighting for the B1G title, we would not be denied. Since then, a loss to MI, a tie with MSU and a loss to PSU - 2-2-1 against a pretty lackluster field. We'll find the story out soon enough.

In other words, its BC and UND.

In other words, its BC and UND.
BC down 2-4 vs. Lowell toward the end of period 2.
PSU and Wisco scoreless toward the end of period 1.
Air Force leading Robbie Morris 2-1 end of 2.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

A Penn St. + Harvard win also keeps the Gophers at #4 overall
Harvard has a 1-0 lead in the 2nd and Penn St. is up 1-0 at the end of one.
Air Force continues to lead RM 2-1 middle of the 3rd.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

Air Force beats Robert Morris (2-1) and Penn State continues to lead the Badgers 1-0, now with 8:00 to go in the 2nd. But with last night's two overtime game, can they hang on?

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

BC hits the crossbar with seconds to go, but Lowell hangs on to win 4-3. :( For the first time in 8 years the Eagles do no make the NCAA Tournament.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

With UMD jumping to a 3-1 lead over UND it would appear now that our fate (No. 1 seed) rests with Penn State hanging on to beat Wisconsin. They carry a 1-0 lead into the 3rd.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

And the Badgers take advantage of a power play to tie it 1-1. :( Six minutes to go in regulation.

Or not.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

Duluth wins 4-3. Last hope for a No. 1 seed is Penn State, which is now going to their second consecutive double overtime.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

And the Nittany Lions pull it out, 2-1 in two OT's. So we do we get a No. 1 seed for sure? I guess we'll see tomorrow AM!

Yes. The Gophers will be a 1 seed.
There are 2 cardinal rules that have always been followed by the selection committee -

1. Avoid intra-conference match-ups in the first round
2. You can swap teams around within a seeding band, but you can't swap teams between 2 bands.

Don't forget about attendance.;)

That hasn't been written in stone the way the other two have.

I know you are being semi-facetious, but just pointing out that the two I listed have NEVER been compromised since the inception of the Pairwise selection method.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread - 2016-2017

I guess the way I would look at it is your #2 is a precursor to a #3, attendance. I think that's the way Jayson Moy looks at it.

"Since USCHO began the PairWise Rankings, we have correctly identified all of the teams that have been selected to the NCAA tournament. Five of the last six years, I am the only prognosticator to have correctly predicted the exact brackets for the NCAA tournament, meaning that I have predicted how the committee thought when putting together the brackets.

When you look at past history, it comes down to attendance and it doesn’t matter where the seeds are. What’s important is preserving the matchups that are made with teams outside of the Top 16 to those No. 1 seeds and then attendance. It doesn’t matter what the seeds are, just that you stay within that band. In other words, if you’re a second-seeded team from 5-8, you can go anywhere and play anyone, as long as the team you’re playing is 9-12." - Jayson Moy, Senior Writer, USCHO

Yep, that's fine. Attendance is definitely a high priority and always has been.

But attendance will be (and has been) sacrificed to adhere to the 2 cardinal rules.

EDIT:
For that matter, avoiding intra-conference match-ups has always been assumed to be a lower priority than maintaining band integrity, but that assumption has yet to be put to the test.

And, it won't be this year, either.
