Minnesota Gophers Season Thread 2015-16

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread 2015-16

Jayson Moy has the Gophers vs UND in the first round pairings of the Regional at the X. He's been right on the brackets 4 out of 5 previous years. Obviously, some hockey yet to be played out and it could change. But if it stands, barring some kind of divine intervention and constellation of the alignment of the stars, we will be annihilated.

The gophers were in all sense of the word "annihilated" in the 2014 FF game against UND... Hockey is a funny sport, the best team doesn't always win. But the best team won the the natty in 2014, in that there was no doubt. As a NoDak fan, it was crazy we couldn't put the puck in the the net that semi-final game. But of course good things did come out of that loss... Union whooping up on the goofs and watching a bunch of hipster scarf-wearing goofers fans burn down dinkytown.

I respond with two simple letters. B and C.

With handles that include drunk, Melvin, willy, goon, wreck, etc it's all you need to know about the average Fawker. :D

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread 2015-16

I'm personally not thinking very much right now about how the Gophers will fair in the first round of the NCAAs.

Yeah, I'm more in "let's just hope they get in; I don't really care who they play as long as they get in" mode right now.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread 2015-16

Cue the North Dakota fans whining about the matchup being essentially a home game for the Gophers, LOL! :D

That's a perk of being regional host. Why would there be any whining? The regional in Fargo last year was essentially 2 home games for UND.

Now if you want to talk about the old Final Five being home games for the Gophers.... ;)

The game was tied and going into overtime, if Holl doesn't step up in the play and take that shot with .06 sec. left. How is that "annihilated"?

In UND-land, every shot that missed the net but wasn't stopped should've counted as a goal for the future Greg Fawkers.

Probably referring to the fact that UND dominated Minnesota in almost every facet of that game, other than winning. Woulda, coulda, shoulda though.

The only problem with that theory is that nobody dominated every facet of that game. On paper the Gophers should have won big, but as we all know the games are not played on paper. Let's not lose sight of the fact that North Dakota was a bit down that year and was on the bubble to even make the tournament, much like the position the Gophers are in this year. I believe it was Wisconsin's OT victory over Ohio State in the Big Ten tournament that allowed them to sneak in the back door. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember the general consensus was that North Dakota would have been on the outside looking in had Ohio State defeated Wisconsin. Like many other low-seeded teams in recent memory, the 2013-14 North Dakota team managed to do well in the regional and earned a trip to the Frozen Four. On the night of that Frozen Four semifinal game it is safe to say the Gophers played down to the level of their competition and allowed an inferior opponent to keep it close till the very end. The score and the overall flow of the game was dead even for the first two periods. In the 3rd period I will admit that North Dakota seemed to be gaining momentum and may have had an edge going into OT, but to say that they dominated almost every facet of the game is just downright absurd. It was a very evenly matched game, and in the end the better team won.

@Speed Kills: You had a long post so I won't quote the whole thing. You said Minnesota played down to the level of an inferior opponent? I counter with maybe the Gophers and the Big Ten simply weren't as good as people thought? Possibly an early indicator of things to come?

PS I'm just razzing you. NCHC > Big Ten. :D

You're conversing with a Halo fan dude - they're infallible.
Says the fella with a pretty nifty golden halo on his head. You get that shined? ;)

and, quitting too early.
Yep, talk about perfect example of why you never quit on a play. That and the Wheeler Final Five goal...

Someone needs to get this willy a dictionary

He got as far as saying "dic" as he mouthed the words and broke out laughing like a 2nd-grader.

Willy: it's a big book with the meaning of words. Ask the lady at the book building for one.

You're certainly entitled to an opinion but I think you're way off.

The teams that make up the Big Ten have won more combined national championships than the combined national championships of any other conference. That much is fact that cannot be disputed.

The NCHC has a handful of very good regular season teams, but let's be honest... only two of them have a tradition of winning NCAA championships and neither one of them has even been to the title game in over a decade. For as much as NCHC fans like to mouth off about how great they think their conference is, you'd think they'd have won the last two national championships or at least one... or at least maybe played in one. What an overrated/overhyped conference, sheesh!!! The NCHC, through the first two completed years of its existence, has yet to be represented in a national championship game.

Big Ten > NCHC

PS - What does NCHC stand for... No Championship Hardware Coming? LOL!!!
