Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Catching recruiting breaks like this is nice when they happen, but they come with a big fat caveat. Some don't develop like you would hope, and those that do usually do not bring championships or even great seasons. I guess the one thing you can hope for is a chance to watch some special talent when you get the chance. Guys like Toews, Kerdiles, Bjugstad, and Parise didn't bring banners home, but a lot of fans got to see some great college hockey talent, and not just in their home rinks. I hate to see the gophs get the best talent, but better UMinn than juniors or a school where you never get to watch them play. Hopefully this will work out for both Boeser and UND, and maybe it is just one more reason why elite players will choose the college route in the future.

No big surprise. He's changed his mind on a major decision, changed his mind on changing his mind, and been on the fence for...I have no idea how long. We've had our share of those players in the past. Its for the best.

Agreed, after being burned continually by players defecting after 1-2 seasons, Lucia's altered his recruiting strategy over the past few seasons to focus more on smaller, 3-4 year players. Obviously, the Gophers need high end players at times despite the flight risk. But unlike most Gopher recruits who typically wanted to play for MN since they were kids, Boeser did not possess that same inherent passion to wear the "M". So it's better he go elsewhere. I like seeing skill players like Justin Kloos, Leon Bristedt, C. Reilly, Travis Boyd, Justin Holl, Nate Condon, etc. developing their game for 4 years within the Gopher system.

The Gophers wanted him so let's not act like he didn't fit into the staff's current recruiting strategy.

You misread my post. Did I say they didn't want him?

There's more selection criteria involved in recruiting than just a warm body with a celebrated skill set. Boeser's "dream" was to play for the Badgers. If his heart is not 100% into wearing the "M", he's not the guy the Gophers need in the locker room or on the ice. If I'm the coach and I don't see a raw passion and extraordinary vision to play for MN in his comments and demeanor, I'm saying goodbye and wishing him good luck in a heartbeat. Don't need him, don't want him...period.

IMO if his "dream" was to play for the Badgers, he probably should have followed his heart, unless he and the Badgers staff had some serious relational conflicts. Apparently, playing for UND was not his "dream" and that MAY bite UND in the *** down the road. If one of the main reasons he decided on UND was because of the Badgers poor season, that's a very poor basis for a career decision. I'm speculating, but if he's a kid with an entitlement attitude, that's the kind of poison the Gophers have seen in the locker room in the past which any team should avoid at all costs.

Secondly, I'm not impressed with this kid based upon what he's done in the USHL. Like many USHL guys who arrive with high expectations, there's no guarantee he will perform as expected (i.e. Cammarata).

Taylor Cammarata also played for Waterloo. But Boeser won't come close to his numbers. But Cammarata will never come close to his USHL numbers in D1 either!

Waterloo Blackhawks/Boeser- (2014-15): 23-18-41
Waterloo Blackhawks/Cammarata- (2011-12) 27-42-69, (2012-13): 38-55-93.
Gophers/Cammarata- (2013-14): 10-17-27, (2014-15): 2-18-20

Cammarata was more decorated in the USHL than Boeser or any player in the history of the USHL. He was named USHL 2011-12 Rookie of the Year; and 2012-13 USA Hockey's Junior Player of the Year awarded to the most outstanding American-born player in Junior hockey, USHL Player of the Year, USHL Forward of the Year and All-USHL First Team. There's a negative performance correlation between the USHL and D1 college hockey. Time to move on.

The Novak/Sheehy combo is pretty good...yet not so sure about our upcoming class. We've got a whale of a class around the corner in Middlestadt, Reedy, Wait, Fallstrom, Lindgren and Maniscalco.

If other MN fans can read this, can we quit airing our coaching staff's dirty laundry on GPL whether its reality or not?

Yeah that's funny stuff right there. It makes no sense to do it but those "insiders" feel the need to spread rumors I guess.

Whether it's true or not, who cares, social media has a way of biting you in the arse.

Though the spin doctoring on that site about "the recruit" is hilarious. Now he doesn't fit into our team, haha total BS and back tracking by those "experts"

I am curious what you mean by this statement. It reads like you are saying that the better one does in the USHL, the poorer one will do in D1. Which I am pretty sure is NOT what you meant to say. But if that's not what you meant... then..what did you mean?

I'm pretty sure he means that the kids who explode offensively in the USHL never reach that level of production in the NCAA.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

OK Gopher fans, you've got a $100 and need to make a bet on one of the following. Where would you place your money?

1. Gophers do enough and get some help from other teams, resulting in an at-large NCAA bid.
2. #1 doesn't happen, but Gophers win the B1G tourney and get in that way.
3. Gophers accomplish both #1 and #2 and as a result get a higher-than-expected seed.
4. Gophers fail to make the NCAA's.

No caveats, just place your bet!

#1, I think they'll play their best when their backs are against the wall late in the season. I do think they'll sweep Michigan this week, and I wouldn't be surprised if Michigan State did some damage to Penn St. I don't think we can really trust the gophers in tournaments (North star cup, Mariucci classic, B10 tournament last year) outside of the NCAA tournament anymore. They're good enough to win it, but I wouldn't bet $100 on it.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

I'd be sweating bullets if I was a top seeded team and I had to play the Gophers first round. Currently, it looks like it's going to comedown between the Gophers playing BU or UND. I would definitely call a upset over BU, just because the gophers power play is overwhelming and their defense/goaltending is starting to show some confidence. I don't think the gophers could take down UND, simply because they've played better competition all year and will be better conditioned for the tournament, but I wouldn't be surprised if UND got taken down first round. Overall, the Gophers have a serious shot at pulling off a couple upsets in the tourney.

If you're talking about UND, sweating bullets is not the right usage of words... licking their chops would be more like it. Gopher fans with short memories forget how close they were to getting upset last year. That was in a game they were outplayed and out hustled virtually the whole game by a much less talented Sioux team. You have a lot of delusion to think that top ranked teams are somehow "scared" of having to play this under-performing gopher team.

I agree with your take on the national semifinal game last year.

However, I think you're lying if you say you wouldn't be at least a little nervous to play the Gophers if you're UND.

This UND fan is always nervous about playing the gophers, and they are a bit of a sleeping giant this year.

Well there is no doubt that they are under-performing with the amount of talent on this gopher team... I think this michigan series should tell a lot about the best two teams in the big ten. I'm guessing it'll be some good hockey.

That's how I feel about playing UND in any given season.

I think the old cliche holds more true in the UND/UM rivalry than any other(though I am biased;) ): You throw the records out the window when those two teams meet.
