K bud you can't sit here and tell me you'd be comfortable playing the Gophers first round. Both teams would be "Licking their chops" to play each other the first round. For the Gophers, it would give them the chance to show the country that they're one of the best teams (even though their record doesn't show it) against their biggest rival. For UND, they would get a chance to get revenge on almost the same team that took them out of a Natty hope last year. When it comes down to it, you can't predict a UND vs UofM game. Each team plays with a different passion and fire that they don't always show during the regular season. I was simply saying that UND has proven that they should be the favored team in this game, but nobody knows what to expect from the Gophers (or the Whioux) when they play each other. And I bet you could name off a couple (Or a handful) higher ranked teams that you would feel a lot better playing over the Gophers in the first round.

Well, one thing you can predict is at the end of a hard fought game they will shake hands and congratulate each other on a well played game... wait. ****... I guess you can't even predict that. :o

Playing UND in the first round would only be to remind them how much they miss us and start their obsession all over again as we get closer to a point we may play them during the regular season again.

I think the old cliche holds more true in the UND/UM rivalry than any other(though I am biased;) ): You throw the records out the window when those two teams meet.

As much as I liked last night, tonight was the kind of win I REALLY wanted to see to make me think MN truly turned a corner and was able to play the kind of game needed to have success in the NCAAs.

Now it's about consistency. They showed they can play a disciplined, defensively strong game - but they can't afford any nights off or to drop any more winnable games.

Really hoping Lettieri is OK to go next weekend. That's the 2nd shot to the head he has taken this season, and even if he feels OK precautionary protocol for possibly concussive incidents might keep him out. Hopefully that's a non-issue. Losing him on top of C Reilly would put them in a little bit of a bind.

Also, kind of crummy to see, but if the Big10 awarded points properly MN would be alone in 1st place right now.

In his post-game interview on the radio Lucia seemed to downplay it a little bit, saying that he had a "headache" but was otherwise doing OK. But man did he take one for the team on that play...

It does suck, but let's just win this thing. Michigan will drop at least one point. Let's drop zero.

Big night for Gophers. Gopher win and 4 of 6 Wild goals by Gophers (Vanek-2, Schroeder, Haula). (Strange how it seems like on both those teams, someone just flipped a switch at the same time and they both started playing.)

Gophs are still in a precarious position, but I am feeling quite a bit better about their play than I did a few weeks ago. The problem is, they have left themselves very little room for error. Even if they play complete games, there is always the chance they lose one to a hot goalie and or lucky bounces. Overall though, it feels like the sun is shining this morning (even though it isn't). (Maybe this will get me fired up for my final game of my tourney today.)

He seemed very wobbly even with 2 guys helping him off the ice, so I agree, don't know how it isn't a concussion.

The last time I looked like that was in high school after beer bonging a 6 pack of Schmidt beer.

That said, heard he may be ok just "dazed and confused", hope so.

Every true Gopher fan has been waiting for this moment when Minnesota finally decides to start playing at their true level of talent. This weekend taught us 3 thing. 1. Wilcox is a goalie that we can once again trust. 2. We have a strong enough defense to shut down one of the highest scoring teams in the country. And 3. We are once again the B10's team to beat. Lets keep this rolling!

Was he a farmer? All the farm kids around here drank Schmidt, and all the city kids drank Miller. Of course, the kegs were always out at someone's farm, so we drank whatever we could.

For those of you not into stats read the following at your own risk! :D

I meant a negative, not weak correlation and exactly what you thought I didn't mean. :) I should preface this by saying my statement about a negative performance correlation between the USHL and D1 needs more analysis. Out of curiosity, I did do an informal study of USHL 20+ goal scorers compared to a USHL baseline of 7 or less goal scorers. The sample population of interest was approximately 40 players consisting of leading USHL goal scorers, Gopher players and others who played in the USHL and D1 from 2004-2013.

With the same amount of games played, the findings indicated USHL players who scored 20+ goals showed a 25-35% (in several cases > 35%) reduction in goal scoring in D1 college hockey. On the other hand, USHL players who scored 7 goals or less showed only a 15-25% drop in scoring in D1 college hockey. This suggests that an increase in goals scored in the USHL may have a weak negative correlation with the number of goals scored in D1 college hockey.

This is an informal study. I would need to run ANOVA, Pearson correlation and ad hoc procedures (p = .05) with a larger randomized sample size to prove my hypothesis which I'd like to do someday when I have time. But given the increase in the parity of college hockey talent over the past several years, I would expect to find the sampling variance between the two frequency distributions to be significant, meaning the coefficient of determination is fairly high (65-70%). The closer the effect is to -1.00 the greater negative correlation (I would expect a weak -.10 to -.30) and predictability indicating the drop in scoring may be due to a weak negative correlational relationship in goal scoring between USHL and D1. But this is only stating the possible presence of a relationship, but keep in mind this cannot indicate anything in regards to its source, confounds or causal inference.

There were a few Gopher outliers in the past like Ryan Potulny, Kyle Okposo, Erik Haula to name a few. But there seemed to be a lots of confirmation data with Gopher players like Howe, Cepis, Hansen, Bostrom, Ambroz, Warning, Condon, Kloos, Cammarata, Lettieri, etc. who were all USHL 20+ goal scorers who significantly declined in goal scoring since playing D1 with the Gophers. This was the case with other USHL players on other D1 teams as well.
