Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

I can accept a loss. Hell, I can accept losing. Half-assed efforts and indifference from the team are inconceivable. This season is heart-breaking so far not because it hasn't gone as planned, but because the team doesn't seem to give a s##t.

Minnesota hasn’t beaten a team in the top 35 of the Pairwise since Nov. 28 — 1-4-1 in last six

Have to win the big ten tournament now. Which won't happen, of course.

I understand the gloom, but it's way to early for you guys to give up on an at-large.

For one thing, you have an important tourney game to lose with .05 left. You gotta be there.

Had a couple of Grade A chances to win it just before they lost it, but once again they just couldn't bury the puck when it mattered most.

It always helps when you can not only shoot the puck, but actually direct it to a specific spot with accuracy and velocity.;) It's a fundamental skill that was hammered into my head by my coaches and it MUST be mastered for success without exception. Master this skill and you can beat any goalie. Look at the 0/5 on shootouts, look at the recent poor effort against MSUM by Ambroz on the penalty shot, look at the literally hundreds of poor shots we've already seen this season that typically result in a puck landing in the goalie's belly, pads, glove or wide of the net. You're not going to score many goals at any level if you have not learned how to shoot the puck with accuracy.

That's as much a fault of the coaching staff as it is the players. The responsibility of the coaching staff is to recognize those glaring weaknesses and make **** sure it's corrected before the next weekend series at. all. costs. I had to laugh after watching an interview with Lucia after the recent shootout loss to Wis. He was asked, "What is it about shootouts and you guys? I don't know", Lucia responded. Then the same reporter asked again, "Do you have an answer?, Lucia shook his head. It's those kind of comments that make me wonder. He's receiving a base salary including supplemental pay of $306,000 to know why. This isn't quantum mechanics...they simply have not developed the skill to shoot accurately under duress.

My guess is Herbie Brooks would have the guys stay overtime everyday of practice until they got it right. I've been around hockey long enough to know the problems on this team are also a reflection of a disconnect with soft leadership at various levels. This season has the eerie feeling of 2009...good start, horrible finish, bad coaching and terrible shot selection. And it may look a lot like it when it's all said and done.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

The unexpected for me was how Marshall looked like he had fixed his game and now Brady Skjei was lost. He was out of position on the 2nd UMD goal, he missed an open net shot, horrible game for him. On Lucia's coaching and not having an answer on penalty shots, all I know is that's an individual skill. He's a team coach and from what (little) I know about his practices he's not spending time on tuning and working individual skills. There's a month of games left but the non conference games are going to kill the pairwise rankings for the end of the year for this team. Even if they win 9 of their 14 games left putting them over 20 wins for the year. How can they win 9 much less half of them playing like this.
Lucia getting ousted is not possible. If he leaves it will look like his terms, graceful, and lots of fanfare for running the program as long as he has.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

I have a feeling this is a lost season as well. Interesting to think about all of the challenges and what could have possibly created this downslide.

The one thing about this weekend that I truly don't understand is from the MSU-M game. Late in the the third and you are a man up and another penalty gets called. And, it's an option penalty for a shot or 2 mins. Why in the world would you choose the shot when the team has been terrible at it; and second, why would you pick Ambroz? Surely there are players that have a little more finesse or skill, or something.

It was just another in the long line of decisions made about this team that has made me shake my head.

On the bright side, I won't have to worry about them being in Boston this year. I always have a better time at the FF when they aren't around. Although, I would still like to see #6 in my lifetime...

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

I can see the rational behind taking the shot; very little time left and the chance to score while the clock isn't moving.

That plus they would still have a 6 on 4 for nearly a minute if they did convert.

Long discussion with a Gopher fan on Friday night about the decision. Eventually, we came to agree with Lucia on both decisions. Penalty shot was the play because of the 2 goal deficit and limited amount of time. Ambroz because of the first goal of the night and the Cup winning shootout goal from last year.
Anyway, hope you run the table and make the NCAAs

He had to opt for the penalty shot. Down 2 with a little over a minute to go? If you have the opportunity to get 1 of those back without taking any time off the clock you have to take it. Very easy decision.

Ambroz has the best percentage of any Gopher player on penalty shots/shoot-outs. He also reportedly wins the penalty shot competition in practice more than any other player. Again, seems like a pretty simple decision to me.

My guess would be you're right about Brooks when it came to the Olympic team.
But "stay overtime everyday of practice" may not be an option.
Doesn't the NCAA dictate how much time can be spent at practice???
May have that wrong???

For the regular season I believe it's twenty hours a week and a mandatory day off. No more than 4hrs participation in a day and a competition equals 3 hours.
