Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Excellent call on how dominant UMI was without JT Compher, Tyler Motte, Dylan Larkin and Zach Werenski. While they dominated a pretty decent and top 10 PWR team on a neutral rink without the core of their team...we struggled past 49th PWR ranked RIT missing two players that were easily replaceable at home.

Dominated who? Tech beat Mich in every aspect of that game except red lights.

Everyone who is on GPL needs to get on the BTn thread and tell them to stop with the horrible camera angel from the corner!!!!!! Horrible.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Gophers are moving the puck about as well as they have all year. I wonder if they can keep up the pace?

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

I'm out on the ledge.
This is not good.
This is not good, at all.

Sounds like they lost a camera so it was corner view for a bit.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Not the right result, but I felt much better about this game than a number of the other recent ones.

The compete level was much better and I thought they were generating more quality 5x5. It's still not enough, but better, and you gotta give credit to Mich for their play in the defensive end; it was better than I was expecting based off of what I have seen from them this year.

All 3 of Michigan's regulation goals came on transition, and that was the biggest issue tonight. Just not good enough in decisions about when to push offensively. But in a way I see that as progress. Those transitions and decisions are something that can be worked on, and something I have a lot of confidence in the coaching staff to work out. Getting beat on some bad decisions about when to push offensively or looking to make a play in the neutral zone rather than make the safe defensive play is a heck of a lot better than getting beat on compete and individual, small battles. So I see tonight as a step in the right direction toward this team playing like a national title contender.

Heard that right after my post about the camera.

And ledge? Yes. Never am quite sure which is worse, a loss where they actually had edge in play and you feel they deserved the win, or a loss where they didn't play consistently all game. Most recent always seems worse.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Just watched the reply of the OT and it's disappointing. In a span of the last 15 seconds of OT, Vinnie Lettieri made 5 costly puck handling errors that eventually cost the Gophers the game. 1) He lost the puck on the wall and passed it to a Mich. player in front of the net, 2) then tried to get it back and lost it again, 3) then missed another poke check in front with a lazy reach and 4) then the puck caroms off his stick to Martin on the point and 5) his last one was so atrocious it's almost too painful to look at the replay. If you want to totally screen your own goalie, do what Lettieri did. Try to block a shot by going down on one knee, then open your legs and allow your opponent to blast a cannonading slap shot through your legs so your goalie can't see it. I like the way Lettieri skates, but that series of blunders was about as bad as it gets at any level of hockey.

I am pretty down on that second goal by Michigan. Boyd gets a shorty opportunity that goes nowhere while Ambroz follows and gets caught with his pants down in front of the Michigan net.Boom! 4 on 2. I like the aggressive PK but we have to be smarter than that.

I know this is cliché. But tonight's game is important. Its our series against our top competition for the B1G championship as well as top seeds in the tourney. Its got PWR implications, as now Mich should be TUC, at a time when making the tourney is not guaranteed. And getting swept at Michigan means all we can do is tie them up at home if we win out (whereas a split on the road is very respectable. Its really important.

Unfortunately bad line match up. You had Littieri (and not sure who else but too much of the 4th line against...Larkin's line. I saw him on the ice about a minute prior thinking that I was hoping they'd get that line off and give us a chance for a goal.

I think it was Werenski that caught him and got the stick on Boyd with Ambroz as the trailer. Boyd had the jump and blew by Werenski on the blue line, so it looked like a breakaway, then Werenski found another gear. Hard not to take a gamble on that one though.

But the goal by Larkin on that play was ultimately on Marshall. Marshall looked mesmerized at the Mich. 4 man attack and tried to swipe at the pass and missed, instead of pushing Larkin's upper body off the puck and taking his shot away. Marshall fanned on it and the pass ended up on Larkin's tape staring at an empty net. If the D are more physical in front those plays won't happen as easily.

Tonight's game REALLY IMPORTANT. A loss spells trouble in the PWR. I would prefer Lucia run only top 3 lines in OT.

EDIT

It was Lettieri, C. Reilly and Kloos out there when they scored in OT. Having guys from the 4th, 1st and 2nd line out there together in OT makes no sense.

My memory's probably off, but wasn't it Lettieri who got hurt pretty bad while blocking a shot earlier in the season? He sure looked gun-shy on the game-winner last night, like he really didn't want to get hit, and I wonder if his previous painful experience might have had something to do with it.

The kicker for me was after the shot went cascading through his legs, only then did he drop to his knees. The shot goes in and you see Lettieri on his knees. Little late there pal. I like Vinnie and I think he's got tons of upside, and I don't want to flame him too much here. It's a team effort and a team loss. But the cardinal rule has always been if you go down for a block, you better **** well make sure you do WHATEVER it takes to stop that puck no matter how much it hurts. Or like we saw you actually make the shot more dangerous by not blocking it. No options, Lettieri's gotta block that shot because Wilcox can't see it.

Yeah, most goalies would prefer you get the hell outta the way if you aren't sure about blocking the shot.

Right now I'm the teacher that is pushing up his glasses, giving a serious look at the student, and wondering...will he ever reach his potential?
I was going to take this and run with it, but I'll hold off...

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Gophers 1, Michigan 4; end of 1st period. Gophers are looking more and more like a .500 team.
