On the edge of my seat. Won't sleep tonight if they lose. Will start 2015 offseason thread.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

3-3 now with 13:00 or so left in 3rd

Rauser scores and it's 4-3 Gophers over young kids.

U18's tie it up with 1:30 left in 3rd. Wilcox hasn't played all game BTW :)

Went to OT tied 4-4 and Auston Matthews scored his 2nd of the night for the winner in OT 5-4 over the Gophers.

He would look good in Maroon and Gold...

He sure would, what a player he is. Gophers were outplayed and outshot for most of the game. This has to be one of the best USA U18 teams ever - they have loads of talent and are very well coached. The Gophers gave it an honest effort and it looked like they very much wanted to win the game, but the better team won tonight...not a good way to close 2014 out at home.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Matthews is that good, but ya we won't get him.

All the fans who say the Gophs getting too many blue-chippers was the problem in the Okposo era should be happy. (Of course a one-and-done doesn't seem to be working out too badly for BU so far.)

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Has he said he is going NCAA, or is he still up in the air on college v. WHL?
He has said as recently as tonight that he's 50/50. We're not in the schools he lists as far as NCAA. I'd think he goes WHL. More likely to lock in that number one overall spot there.

Can't say would be happy seeing him on some of those teams on his list......

"Reilly said the Gophers aren't treating the game as just an exhibition."

Regardless of whether it's an exhibition game or not, if you wear the "M" you play to win, no exceptions. The Gophers were outshot by U18, 40-29, and it appears the goal scoring woes among some top players continued. Moreover, when a team allows two U18 players, Matthews (2-1-3) and Tkachuk (1-2-3) a total of 18 SOG, and some of your best players end up with a goal differential of -2 (Fasching, Kloos, M. Reilly, Bischoff), that's a very poor defensive effort. IMHO Nick Lehr was left out to dry tonight. Nick is a **** good goalie and had one of the top performances in the NAHL last season with a 35-13-1 record with a .932 S% and a 1.84 GAA.

The U18 team was 1-4-1 against college teams going into tonight:

Sat Oct 4 W 3-0 @ Miami University
Mon Oct 6 L 4-7 @ University of Michigan
Thu Oct 16 T 3-3 @ Providence College
Sat Oct 18 L 4-6 @ Boston University
Fri Oct 24 L 2-3 @ Cornell University
Sat Oct 25 L 3-5 @ Oswego State University

Not exactly a confidence builder for Gophers who are headed out east next week to face BC. They better show a much better effort than they've demonstrated over the last 3 games or they will be embarrassed again.

Wow!! The last team that beat this U18 team I really haven't heard of and that makes this really look pathetic compared to last week's whooping to UMD.
The Gophers hockey just makes me cringe at how they are supposed to be, should be...........whatever....one of the best programs in the nation and they have continued to embarrass the heck out of their fan base with losses like this to much lesser teams.

Glad I went to the proper building on campus and watched a real #1 ranked Gopher team powerhouse. I watched the Gopher wrestlers take Michigan State apart 36-3 tonight.

The real head scratcher to me is them losing to Oswego State. Yes they are ranked #2 in the latest D3 poll, but THEY ARE D3 for Pete's sake! And it was Oswego's first game of the season! Looking at the way the US team played tonight you never would have guessed that outcome in 100 years.

Bison Logic: Apparently Oswego is better than Minnesota.

Despite what a lot of fans think, make no mistake about it, these games do matter to a team. I like what the BU coach said after beating U18:

“Obviously, it was nice to win,” BU coach David Quinn said. “People perceive these as games that don’t matter, but they matter to us. I don’t know if we’re going to see a more skilled team than that one. They’re loaded up front; they’ve got a good D corps; they’re well-coached. I’m happy we came out with a 6-4 win."
