Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Not an indication, IMO, b/c the older teams don't treat this as a real game. They use their backups/etc the whole time. Doesn't show what the team is really capable of. Some teams play players that will never see the ice in the regular season. Fine for exhibition, but too many people read too much into these types of games.

Sounds like a convenient excuse for not trying, and losing. Hopefully the Gophers have more pride than that, and will win no matter who's in the lineup.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a matter of not trying....

You see these close scores, and wonder what's up. The program played the scrubs. They didn't go full firepower. That's the difference.

That sounds like a convenient excuse to lose, i.e. we played our scrubs, we didn't go "full firepower", so that's why we lost. I would hope the Gophers have more pride than that, and will show the U18 kids who's boss.

Not gonna happen. Risk < reward.

Wilcox goes down....in an EXHIBITION game?

Just sayin'.

There is an extreme lack of logic in this statement. When did the Gophers last lose an exhibition game, why would they not give players that don't normally see ice time a chance to play minutes, and why does that mean they're setting themselves up for an excuse should they lose? Nobody should care if they lose because they understand the insignificance of it and therefore no excuse is required.

News and notes from Gophersports

http://www.gophersports.com/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/111914aaa.html

The No. 4 Gopher Hockey program hosts the U.S. Under-18 Team on Friday, Nov. 21 at Mariucci Arena in exhibition action. Minnesota's final exhibition game of the season will feature a 7 p.m. CT puck drop with the game being streamed on BTN PLUS.

Military Appreciate Night at Mariucci
The Gophers will celebrate Military Appreciation Night at Mariucci Arena on Friday with several military themed events occurring during the exhibition game including a ceremonial puck drop. Minnesota will also once again feature a Gopher alumni autographed puck surprise sale during the game on the concourse by Section 2 featuring pucks signed by Nick Bjugstad, Alex Goligoski, Thomas Vanek and more. Additionally, Friday's Chuck-A-Puck prize will be a limited edition Gopher Hockey camouflage jersey. All proceeds from the puck surprise and the chuck-a-puck contests will benefit Defending the Blue Line.

USA Hockey Flavor
Five current Gophers skated with the U.S. National Development Team Program prior to joining the Maroon & Gold -- Brady Skjei, Travis Boyd, Hudson Fasching and newcomers Ryan Collins and Jack Glover. Friday's exhibition game marks the first time the two teams have played since Oct. 26, 2012 -- a 2-2 overtime tie. Gopher Hockey sophomore Vinni Lettieri scored a goal for the U.S. Under-18 Team in the game as a temporary player for the squad while Fasching was also on roster for the game.

When did the Gophers last lose an exhibition game

December 15, 1999 to Valerenga (5-7)

why would they not give players that don't normally see ice time a chance to play minutes

They will and they should.

and why does that mean they're setting themselves up for an excuse should they lose?

If the Gophers match their "5th line" (say Rogge, Seeler, Hogland, Johnson, R. Reilly and Coyne against the USA team's top line they probably will lose.

Nobody should care if they lose because they understand the insignificance of it and therefore no excuse is required.

I care if they lose, and hopefully the players care too. You know, that Pride on Ice thing.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

I don't care if they lose if they pick up two wins in Boston. A loss Friday and "less than three points" against BC and NE would start to bug me.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

I have a pair of tickets for tomorrows game that I will not be able to attend. If any of you wants them, they are yours. You will have to come pick them up at my workplace. For extra incentive, at the Sunday game vs. Notre Dame Doug Woog sat two rows down ( and he gave my son an autographed puck, to boot! )

You can donate them to military members per a post on GPL

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

What's the confusion? Just a heads-up if you can't find anyone to give them to.
http://www.gophersports.com/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/112014aaa.html
As a reminder, if you cannot attend the game on Friday night, you can donate your tickets to local military members by emailing gsm@umn.edu with your account name & seat location(s). The Gopher Sports Ticket Office & Gopher Hockey will make sure that a military member will receive your ticket(s).

Thanks. I figured it out. I don't use GPL and at first I couldn't find anything related to said military thing. I retract my confusion.

I'll agree to disagree about its level of significance.

You are right, I am way off base. If they lose to a bunch of high school-aged kids, it doesn't matter, they'll move on, with no loss of confidence. They'll bounce back; just a weird anomaly on their schedule.

Sorry, I'm being a little facetious, but I don't think you can totally dismiss the impact this game will have on team.

Don Lucia spent the drive to Duluth last Friday night watching the first two periods of the University of Minnesota hockey team's 3-0 loss that night to Minnesota-Duluth at Mariucci Arena.

And the Gophers coach didn't like what he saw.

"Sometimes, you watch a game live and you go, 'Well, I don't think we played very well,' and then you watch it on tape and you're like, 'Maybe we were a little better than we thought,' " he said. "Well, that was one of those nights where it didn't look any better" the second time around.

Lucia said he thought Friday's game was one of the team's worst efforts in years.

The Gophers took a penalty 22 seconds into the game, gave up a goal 2:07 minutes in, failed to create high-quality scoring chances most of the night and finished with seven penalties -- some because of mounting frustration.

"(The coaches) didn't say much (Saturday morning), but they didn't need to say much, because we saw it," forward Connor Reilly said. "Most of our guys know what we saw on video; yeah, that's not us. I don't know how we play that poorly."

And yet the Gophers (7-3) followed that up with another loss to Duluth (8-4) on Saturday night, 2-1 on the Bulldogs' home ice.
"Everyone was (upset)," Reilly said. "Trainers, players, coaches -- which is how it should be with the way our performance was."
Several Gophers players said this week that they have put the winless weekend behind them. The team has a chance to regroup with Friday's exhibition game against the U.S. Under-18 Team.

"It's an opportunity to play," Lucia said.
"I think that's the most important thing."
Sophomore forward Hudson Fasching played for the U-18 team against the Gophers two years ago. He remembers former Gophers forward Tom Serratore knocking him out of the game with a hard hit.

"It'll be interesting to kind of see the other side of that," Fasching said. "I was really amped up to play the Gophers ... and even just playing Division I games was such a big deal."
Reilly said the Gophers aren't treating the game as just an exhibition.
Instead, it will serve as an opportunity for Minnesota to fix its problems before heading to Boston next weekend for games against Boston College and Northeastern.

"It's a time for us to regroup, kind of reorganize, figure out some of our weaknesses and try to make up for them," Fasching said.
One glaring weakness was scoring -- Minnesota scored just one goal in the two weekend losses.
"We need a little bit more offense from what I call our 'black and blue' lines," Lucia said. "We haven't had it yet, for sure."
Beyond that, Reilly called the team's effort in Friday's game "atrocious."

"We know we have a lot of skill and a lot of talent. We have some big-time players, but if we're not going to work and the other team outworks us, it doesn't matter how talented we are," he said. "We're probably not going to win enough games -- as many as we want to, at least."

Well, that's good to hear! Looking forward to a hard-fought, competitive game tonight.

Parise forbid they lose or it will be a Top 5 loss for the history of the program.
