Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Hope he is wrong about Fasching going pro next year.....

Not that Fasching won't but that's not a decision that's been made at this stage. I'm sure the kid meant to say two guys that could be in the NHL next year. Young guy in which English is his second language... probably not going to get things across perfectly all the time.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

"The first month of the season has been more difficult than Bristedt thought it would be. Adapting to a different style of play he described as more “north-south” compared to the European “east-west” style has taken longer than he expected."

Bristedt did appear to be pressing a bit in his first couple of games. But in the St. Cloud series you saw some moves to skate out of traffic that even veterans can't replicate. With the credentials he has in Europe, we are just beginning to see what this guy can do.

I realize all that, just commenting I would like to see him another year, which I don't think is out of the question. And actually, while the year is still young, so far Fasching doesn't seem to have made as much of a step up from last year as I expected. He had periods last year where everytime he was on the ice he was noticeable. Hasn't had those stretches yet, couple shifts here and there in a game. Mixed blessing if it continues; team would be more impressive if he dominated like that consistently, but then he'd be less likely to return next year.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Fasching almost every time he touches the puck down low even with 2 guys on him comes away with the puck and is very strong with it. Reminds me of juggs when he used to do that, he has looked solid to me.

Would be nice though for him to play his jr year here, we have had a nice run of players staying which is why we have been at the top lately. The years we struggled we were losing high end talent after 1 and 2 years, you can't do that and expect to be competitive.

When Bjugy was at the U, every time he'd go into the corners with the puck we(my group of friends that went to a lot of games) would say "Just try to take it from him..." and 90% of the time he would come out with the puck still on his stick. I agree with you, Faching has a little of that as well.

Hate to say this but the only way he doesn't go IMHO is if we don't win the NC. Then he sticks around one more year and may be a captain to bring home the big one.

Nah. I think Fasching's gone in either case. He hasn't been as consistently flashy as Rau. But I've seen some incredible shifts particularly last weekend and when he was MVP at the Icebreaker (as I was there in person). An opinion.

Edit: We'll be seeing a changing of the guard next fall regardless. And with Sheehy being near the top of USHL scoring and teammate Tom Novak now starting to hit his stride...we could well see another Kloos/Cammarata combo arrive in Minneapolis for '15/'16.

And we're going to need BIG contributions from the incoming freshmen, much like last season. Help me alleviate my biggest concern: goaltending.

Probably true, but the guy obviously has priorities in check, so he may not be in as big of a hurry as most kids with his talent. There have been some other power forwards in recent past who played another year than expected. While I am not looking too far beyond the next series and the rest of this season, a guy can dream about the future. I buy a Power ball once in awhile, even though I know I won't win. Keep the dream alive. And odds of Fasching returning are better than me winning the PB with the 5 or 6 tickets I buy a year....

That is why it will be crushing if they can't pull off an NC this year, as one never knows how long it will be before they assemble another team with all the pieces And everything works out in single elimination tourney.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Btw- forgot to mention about last series, post-weekend article (or read somewhere, maybe above?) that Wilcox said it was the first weekend he really felt in the groove. I didn't say anything earlier, but in other series he did have moments of looking average. Last weekend, he looked like the Wilcox of last year, who can be counted on to steal a game or two when the rest of the team isn't completely there. If he can keep that groove, things will be looking good.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Sounds like Lettieri will be out this weekend on top of Skjei and Boyd.
That would mean Isackson (ugh) or R Reilly would probably have to play on the 3rd line, ouch. Hope we can ride through the mediocrity of the bottom 2 lines for a few games. Our top 2 lines will have to be carrying us.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Honestly I think Fasching is a far more complete player than Bjugstad. Bjugstad may have more offensive flair but Fasching is bigger and IMHO plays on the defensive side of the puck much better.

Looks like Lucia is going with Isackson: “It’s an opportunity for [Christian] Isackson to maybe step up into the role as a senior. He should be able to carry that for us and we’ll continue to get other guys into our lineup. That’s what you have a team for. You’re going to have injuries throughout the year."

Yeah. That was an expected strength at the start of the year. The thinking was that with Boyd, Ambroz and C Reilly we would have a top two or even top line of many other teams for our third line. With an improving Boyd injured and Ambroz lost without him...C Reilly just can't carry the line. And its now a liability.

Fun seeing the Gopher line for the Wild. And when Ballard was out with them, 4 of 5 Gophers on ice.
