Minnesota Gophers Offesason Thread: Back To 1896

I knew it! Probably a good thing. Now I won't feel guilty about sitting at home with top shelf liquor in hand watching the game on TV in complete warmth. Only downside is likely crappy BTN coverage. Let's hope they made some strides to improve this year.

“@GopherHockey: Just announced by @mnwild: The #Gophers will play @OhioState_MHKY for Hockey Day MN on 1/18. 5 p.m. at Mariucci on @fsnorth & @1500ESPN.”

At least the Saturday game will be on FSN.

The 2014 North Star College Cup

Sep 5, 2013

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota, in conjunction with Bemidji State University, Minnesota State University, St. Cloud State University, the University of Minnesota Duluth and Xcel Energy Center, announced the North Star College Cup on Thursday, giving an official title to the state’s inaugural Division I men’s hockey tournament next year in St. Paul.

After careful deliberation including a fan vote and input from all five of the state’s Division I men’s hockey coaches and administrations, the North Star College Cup was selected from a pool of eight finalists nominated by fans via social media. Borrowing from Minnesota’s moniker of the “North Star State,” the official title provides a unique and memorable portrait of the state’s deep history and tradition as a college hockey hotbed.

“When we began discussing this tournament, one of the things we knew we needed was a tournament name that would instantly catch the attention of college hockey fans in the state,” Minnesota associate athletic director and men’s hockey administrator Tom McGinnis said. “We feel that the North Star College Cup accomplishes that, and we are looking forward to a great event at Xcel Energy Center next January.”

The inaugural North Star College Cup is slated for Friday, January 24 and Saturday, January 25, 2014 with the Gophers, Minnesota State, St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth set to participate while Bemidji State will be idle in the tournament’s first year. The event will feature a tournament championship format with two semifinal games scheduled for Friday (Gophers vs. St. Cloud State and Minnesota State vs. Minnesota Duluth) and a consolation and championship game to follow on Saturday. Tournament details including ticketing information will be finalized and announced at a later date. The University of Minnesota will serve as the event’s permanent host with three of the other four institutions participating on a rotating basis over an initial four-year schedule.

The North Star College Cup came to fruition on March 23, 2013 when Minnesota’s five Division I men’s hockey programs announced their intentions to maintain in-state rivalries despite a split in conference alignments. While all five programs previously competed in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, 2013-14 marks the first season in which the Gophers will compete in the Big Ten Conference while St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth will move to the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.

Minnesota State and Bemidji State will continue to compete in the WCHA. The changing landscape of college hockey provided the impetus for nonconference rivalries between the five programs, and the North Star College Cup ensures those rivalries will remain intact.

I can see their point. Don't want to "whore out" (for lack of a better term) the name.

Many great Minnesotans have things named after them. Tributes are not usually rebuked by families. Also, why didn't they resist SCSU's rink name? If its their wishes, so be it...but I find it odd.

Well, Dan Brooks, Herbie's son, was quoted as saying his father would have been honored to have a building named after him. But apparently not a MN hockey classic of MN schools, despite the fact he was coach for two of 'em.:) I agree, the hockey conference would have been a nice network connection for a variety of reasons with the HB Foundation's vision to help promote youth hockey. Their call, but yeah....hmmm. As far as Herbie is concerned, he probably couldn't care less whether his name is on it or not.

That's a shame (especially letting internet comments be such a large part of how he made his decision), was he expected to be any good?

I find nothing wrong with trying to make your own way in this World. And some of the ridiculous comments made after the kid committed (and even more after he was drafted) made it obvious it would be difficult for him to do here.

I agree. He made a mistake. That turtle move was gopher all the way. :)

Louie would have most likely been a good role player. Unfortunately, because of deep family connections to Gopher hockey and the Wild, some social media clowns insinuated that he was recruited by the Gophers and drafted by the Wild because of those connections not necessarily his talent, which IMO is absurd. Louie's proven he's a good hockey player and played in 45 games last season for Penticton (BCHL) averaging close to a point/game.

It seems in a situation like this a player has basically two choices, "fight or flight": 1) decide to fight it and use it as an incentive to focus on skill development and eventually prove people wrong OR 2) go elsewhere to play where the expectations and rumors surrounding his family name are less intense or threatening.

This isn't the first time nepotism rumors have been implied (i.e. Tony Lucia). Tony fought through it and performed reasonably well. In similar fashion, I suppose Louie could have used the criticism as added incentive to develop and excel, but he obviously lacks the confidence and self-identity at this point to handle it all. Hope things work out for him.
