Minnesota Gophers Offesason Thread: Back To 1896

Re: Minnesota Gophers Offesason Thread: Back To 1896

With a few exceptions, the Gophers have generally been pretty successful when they targeted a kid at a real young age (meaning 16 or under). Not real concerned about that. Besides, Lindgren's game isn't dictated by simply out muscling other guys.

Mueller was one miss...but not due to misjudging his talent.

And I am not saying the chance of him being a complete "miss" is very good. Obviously, if you get one of the top few kids in an age class, there is a pretty good chance he will contribute. He just doesn't have as for to improve as most his age. You don't pass on a guy like that. It is just that you can't count on him maintaining the size of the gap between him and the rest of his cohort and being a difference-maker that many years out, either. Those that can are rare. And the guys I get excited about are the ones that look good enough to significantly raise the play of the team. Hopefully, I will be that excited about him in a couple years.

They are all gambles to some extent. After all, we even see 1st round NHL guys (drafted at the ripe old age of 18/19) that don't pan out. But when you see a kid that good and it isn't because he is relying on some early physical advantage (like being 6'3", 190 lbs. at 15), I'll take my chances. The ones that make me a little leery are the ones like Ambroz... kids that are a "man-child" at 14 or 15 and overpower their same age opponents.

I'll take my chances on the kid with excellent overall skills though.

I recently saw a thread in GPL where a poster by the handle of Iceburg was talking about Bjugstad in 2005. I'll aways take my chances with the top guy or two any age like a Lindgren.

As an FYI, Ice is the ultimate rink rat. He really loves hockey & watches a lot of games at all levels.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the B1G apparently will feature SHOOTOUTS for tie games. Yay!!!

We talked about it a while ago, and I was hoping everyone with Twitter would let the Big Ten hockey account know our opinion.

I had successfully repressed the memory of having heard that. Thanks for reminding me.

I'm sure BTN wants the 'excitement' of an a couple individuals determining the outcome of a hard-fought game. Then all those non-hockey fans will tune in....

They don't play them five times. The carets mean dates are still TBD between the two options in each series.

Right, like the explanation states at the bottom of my post that I didn't bother to read. :D

Re: Minnesota Gophers Offesason Thread: Back To 1896

Weekend of March 22nd should be pretty crazy. The cities will be hosting play off hockey for the best of...Minnesota, Denver, Wisconsin, UMD, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio State, St Cloud, Michigan St, Miami and the list goes on. Outside of BC and possibly Notre Dame or BU, all the biggest names in college hockey.

94 should be getting a lot of use.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Offesason Thread: Back To 1896

Well, you copy/pasted it so he didn't know if you read it or not. :p

Well I didn't read the crap at the bottom either. For all I knew, the carets signified a health food promotion night and they'd be handing out carrots. (Saw a repeat of St. Cloud, but with carrots instead of batteries.) I was staring at the 3 game weekends trying to figure it out until I saw the post clarifying things. (I'm not big on footnotes.)
