Minnesota Gophers 2022-23

I hope upgrading the ice plant is among them. The ice condition at Ridder has gotten embarrassing.
Well they can take the first step by not letting the kiddies play between periods. Surface the ice immediately following the conclusion of the first and second periods.

That would be a step, yes, but the problems have escalated far past just not being frozen at the start if the second and third periods. The ice was terrible even during the first for most of this past year.

Roster is out for the Gophers...

https://gophersports.com/sports/womens-ice-hockey/roster

3 goalies, 7 defensemen, 15 forwards and 2 players that can either be D or F in Franco and Dunne. 9 5th year players.

Holy smokes that is a jam packed roster, especially at forward. How do you find playing time for that many forwards? They could, if the braintrust decides to, skate 4 lines and still have a number of players sitting.

I do like the addition of Lizi Norton to help replace the loss of Brown and Knowles who both logged a lot of ice time on D.

A whole lot of Minnesota talent on this team. Plenty of Minnesota natives around the D1 scene. Indeed, the state of hockey!

Anxious to see the two Scandinavians Nelli Laitinen (D) and Josefin Bouveng (F) on the roster. I have a hunch they're going to surprise some people.

One quibble from the pedantic guy: Finns aren't Scandinavians. They're a completely different ethnic group, more closely related to Mongolians than Scandinavians. (A significant portion of the population of Finland are actually Swedes, though few of them are native Swedish speakers any longer.) Finland is lumped together with the Scandinavian countries as Nordic.

But, yes, I'm very interested to see them play. Watching the Olympics, I was very impressed with Laitinen. I think she'll be an impact player from the beginning. Bouveng was a lot less visible, and I don't have a feel for how good she is. The folks at The Ice Garden are very high on both of them. If you believe their ranking of the top 25 players under the age of 25 (which I'm taking with a great deal of skepticism), they are the top two incoming freshmen in the country.

So that is why historically the Russians have been known to attempt to take over Finland from time to time.

Thanks for this - learned some things today!

Interesting. the Ice Garden seem clued in about the Europeans. They were hyping Aurard and Muller before anyone. Hopefully for Minnesota fans they are right again.

That they do and as you mentioned they were spot on with Aurard and Mueller. But skeptisicm is how some folks roll.

Both Laitinen and Bouveng are older players so while they are coming in as freshmen, they are more like transfer players with their International experience. Bouveng turned 21 in May of this year and Laitinen turned 20 this year in April

I think that this is a huge plus for these players. They both could be ROTY candidates.
