Minnesota Gophers 2018-2019

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2018-2019

I'm trying to remember if a team that was this shaky defensively has ever won the national championship; no luck so far. Maybe it is all about perception, and the minute a team wins the title, we suddenly remember only its good and not its bad.

One thing, albeit a fairly small one, they need to work on is being able to one-time a shot without loading up before the pass is even made. Knowles had one today that she telegraphed so blatantly that the Princeton forward was about three feet away from her by the time the puck arrived, and #24 fired it anyway, almost leading to a breakaway the other direction.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2018-2019

because Fillier in particular is wicked good.

Well, other than she's extremely fast, has a very hard and accurate shot and is very adept overall in handling the puck, I guess she's okay.

On the Gopher end, I wish Scobee wouldn't feel the need to touch every single puck that goes by the side of her net, especially when there are only Gopher players around it. The Pannek line was by far the best line on the ice all day, but overall "shaky defensively" was also way too common for much of the Gophers play today.

True. However, I can't remember a national champion that has as much trouble scoring as Wisconsin does.* I can't remember a national champion with the array of *** losses, or as little production from its second and third lines, as Clarkson. And I can't remember a national champion that finished as far behind the competition in the rankings as Cornell.

No matter what happens next week, we're going to have a national champion that has at least one major blemish. I'm not sure why the Gophers' flaws stand out any more than the other teams'.

*We are, after all, talking about a team that, if we ignore empty net goals, scored 0, 3, 2, 1, and 2 goals against what we are stipulating is a shaky defense.

Because they're the ones that I give a rip about. The Gophers have more strengths than weaknesses, for sure. And overall, I thought that they played pretty well defensively yesterday, once they truly recognized what they were up against. Going forward, I'm not sure how much time that they can afford to figure things out.

One of the strengths, IMO, is how consistent the freshmen have been this season. I'd say #6 and #16 have had the biggest delta, from how they have played at their lowest, to how they are playing now, and even that hasn't been a ton of variance as compared to how first year ups and downs can go. Both Oden and Heise have been remarkably consistent for all of the different roles that they've been asked to fill over the course of the year. It isn't as easy to continue to have a positive impact on the game when you're often surrounded by different people as they make it look.

In terms of just being a fan and watching the sport, I hope that we have more games against Princeton in the future. IMO, that is what women's hockey should be, two teams getting up and down the ice and trying to make things happen. If there were more games that looked like that, I think that the sport would have more fans.

(where is the nod in agreement emoji?) Very fun game to watch because of this! My guest yesterday, who has been to 10 games with me, thought this was the best she has seen largely for that reason.

Truth be told, winning the game also helped for me!

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2018-2019

On the plus side, Kelly Pannek was very good today. While part of me wonders where she was at other points of the season, I'm glad that she showed up today. :)
If she had a better game this season I can't recall which one. Not only did she figure in all of the Gopher goals that were not scored into an empty net, with the winning goal and two assists, she saved what looked to be a sure goal at the end when she was able to deflect the puck away from going into an otherwise empty net.

If they awarded 3 Stars after the game my vote would go to:

1. Kelly Pannek
2. Sarah Fillier
3. Potomak sisters

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2018-2019

Unfort didn't catch the game this weekend.

On paper, Cornell isn't of the caliber on paper. But we know that paper is more than capable of wounding you. Often games can go either way...but in my mind the gopher women have more than enough talent to get this done. It seemed like they just didn't believe it last week with Wisconsin. My evidence? The fact that they could take control once the motivation came in the second. We'll see.

1. Kelly Pannek
2. Sarah Fillier
3. Potomak sisters

Good to see. I've felt Pannek hasn't been quite what I would have expected this year.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2018-2019

There were more referees back then and they all needed "instructions," especially Doocy, Storey, Mendel and the Shepherds and mostly from "she who will not be named."

I heard the Princeton coach yakking all game, some of it may have been to her players players, but it did kind of make me reminisce about the old days and the coach who shan't be mentioned
I *almost* felt sorry for the Princeton Alternate captain who was talking to one of the officials between periods, the ref of course simply shook his head from side to side, poor girl, she is new to WCHA officiating ...

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2018-2019

Note that the referee did come out early in the third and call a penalty on a play that they'd been letting go all game, so can't say that the officials are impervious to the power of suggestion.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2018-2019

“You want to coach at a place where expectations are high, and you want to coach at a place where players are really, really talented, where you have the opportunity to compete for national championships.’’

-- Brad Frost, Gophers women’s coach, whose team is in the NCAA Frozen Four for the ninth time in the past 11 years.

He's leaving UM for UW?!?! Wow.

I can see where you would make that conclusion, given he didn't say "... where you have the opportunity to win national championships." But if you think back through the thinner-induced haze, even the Badgers used to win championships long, long ago. There's still hope for you guys. :)

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2018-2019

Amy and Sarah Potomak reunite, helping Gophers reach Frozen Four

Cute line from the writer, Rachel Blount:
"Gophers coach Brad Frost said his team will be counting on that trio at the Frozen Four. In last weekend’s 5-2 victory over Princeton in the NCAA quarterfinals, the line combined for four goals and five assists, with Pannek potting the winner." :)

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2018-2019

I'm not asking for much but whoever is in goal for the Gophers this afternoon...Could you please make the first save and take it from there? And oh yeah, Grace Zumwinkle...Could you shoot the puck as your first option when given the opportunity?

Thank you from a concerned fan. ;)

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2018-2019

Well, I'm here, after getting to the airport at 4:30 am, and then walking up that fanned hill to get from my motel to the rink.

Funny you should say this. I've had an impression for days that there is going to be one or more very early goals...possibly in each game today and on Sunday.
