The Gophers do realize that there are going to be two games every weekend in the postseason too, right?

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013 Part II: Mmmm, Iron City Beer!

The propensity of this team to play down to the level of their competition is going to bite them in the arse.

The Gophers have done a pretty poor job of picking guys up in front of their net the past two weeks. And they had a lot of problems breaking the puck out of their zone this weekend. Far too many turnovers at their blue line that led to extra chances and tired defenders. They won't go very far if they don't figure these things out.

I'm afraid this may be the case. On the flip side, this works in the other direction as well, where they seem to really kick their game up another notch against better competition (AFA/BC/ND, for example) so if they can just get it in their minds that they need to play hard to win, they've got that gear, they just seem too settled where they are to do so. I can understand not going completely all-out down the stretch and getting worn down before the playoffs, but they really need to put that higher gear to use before it's just too late to shift gears.

Which is surprising as team defense has been the team's strength for most of the season.
BTW, UMD may have been the best team I've seen this season at running set plays. They looked tremendous on the power play at times and even 5X5 they did a nice job setting up guys for open shots and creating odd man rushes.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013 Part II: Mmmm, Iron City Beer!

Gophers were lucky to get out of last night with a tie. UMD had some ridiculous scoring chances on the PP in OT that had me looking for the puck in the back of the net. MacNaughton may be out of reach, just because Minnesota has played Denver so terrible the past 5 years, and SCSU has MTU at home, but the Gophers are still sitting pretty in the PWR. I will gladly cede the MacNaughton (and Broadmoor) to see our guys get the trophy in April.

I'm afraid that this team won't be playing in April if it doesn't start playing at a higher level every night. Poor play in thier own end recently and the inability to finish off opponents has cost them points virtually every weekend. Maybe my expectations were too high. I thought Bjugsted was going to have a Vanak-like season as a dominent player and that has not happened Just very disapointed in this team so far.

I can't believe I am suggesting this, but it may be time to pop in the video of the Holy Cross game and show this year's Gophers what happens when a team loaded with talent thinks they can move on to the next round in the NCAAs just by showing up.

It's a bit early for something that drastic.

Are you kidding? It's always a good time to play that video!

It is to March what National Lampoon Christmas Vacation is to Christmas.

Make some popcorn Honey, it's on again!

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013 Part II: Mmmm, Iron City Beer!

Call me an optimist, but I think the Mac is still attainable. I can see StC dropping a point, maybe even two to Michigan Tech and splitting with Wisconsin. Of course Minnesota needs to step it up against Denver, as they've shown this year they can play good teams hard, even embarrass them. I'm a fan of Don, but I really hope he isn't as "happy with his team's effort" as is reported by the media. It's so hard to see a team so good not perform up to potential. I'm not even really sure the Gophers deserve the Mac.

They deserve it as much as anybody.

Hopefully, Menard's has a paint thinner sale on to make it a real party.

Sitting down with some gopher fans to watch the HC game with some good thinner? Naw, it's a trap. Nothing could be that good.

Here I thought you badgers liked the trap.

Shake it up Don

[1] Condon centers Reily and Boyd
[2] Haula centers Warning and Sarratore
[3] Bjustad centers Rau and Budish

Roll 3 lines
Spot Isackson and Ambroz

Let Guentzel figure out defensive pairings with
Marshall and ?
Schmidt and ?
Alt, Holl, and Skjie to fill in the ?
Spot Parenteau and Helgeson

If this team lacks fittness to go 3 lines and 4/5 defenders,
consider getting a new fitness coach

If they lack desire, sit in the stands and let Potulny explain what it takes.
