Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

The student section is gearing up for one hell of season...apparently all student season tickets for all Saturday games are now SOLD OUT (only a few remain for Friday nights)!

Great pic!

Hope to see that again this year...

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

That was literally the only game I went to all year where I wasn't in the student section. I would have loved to be in the picture 10 rows up right on the aisle. We had to scalp tickets that night because even the SRO tickets were gone.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

Connor Hurley, C – Edina Hornets (Minn. HS)

Edina is one of the premier high school teams in Minnesota right now, producing NHL prospects such as Zach Budish, Lou Nanne and Max Everson. This is Hurley’s year – but the talented forward jumped the gun and had a fantastic 2011-12 campaign as well, leading the Hornets with 22 goals and 48 points in 25 games and to a berth in the state tournament, where they lost to the eventual champs from Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Still, Hurley came out smiling.

“It was amazing,” he said. “I had been dreaming about it since I was a little kid, watching my brother win it in 2005. It was so much fun skating on that ice.”

His brother Ryan won the prestigious title with Holy Angels (Erik Johnson’s alma mater) and also taught Connor the importance of diversity – in this case, trading off hockey and lacrosse as a way to build skills. And what Connor does well in the arena can be traced to those lessons from his Lax bro:

“I see the ice well and there’s also my playmaking and scoring,” he said. “Being able to make passes without looking.”

Right now, Hurley is playing in the Upper Midwest High School Elite League, which gathers the top players from around Minnesota (plus a few out-of-state squads) for autumn play, since the high school season doesn't start until late November. He’s currently second in league scoring with a goal and seven points in three games – all wins for Team Southwest. Hurley may spend some time with the United States League’s Muskegon Lumberjacks this season too, with the NCAA looming after that.

“I grew up watching the (U. of Minnesota) Gophers, but it’s going to be different now with the Big Ten,” Hurley said. “It’s going to be a very good league, so it will probably be either Big Ten or Hockey East – those are the teams I dreamed of playing for.” Draft eligible in 2013.

Shane Gersich, C – Holy Family Catholic Fire (Minn. HS)

The top pick in the United States League draft, Gersich is now property of the Omaha Lancers. But right now, the high-scoring forward is competing in the Upper Midwest High School Elite League, where he has a solid three goals and five points in three games for Team Southwest. A strong skater who makes his linemates better, Gersich will play high school hockey again this year. Draft eligible in 2014.

We looking at Hurley?

I figure Gersich will wear the Maroon and Gold in the near future.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

according to hammy, the U is pretty confident gersich will commit to the gophers..

im not in the know- but id hope hurley is right up there at the top of the U's "wish list".. now that cammarata has committed id put gersich and hurley as their next two top potential recruits.. although for whatever reason hurley strikes me as a 2 year or so college player (maybe just because of his combination of size/skill)

Of the 24 college games that will be on NBC Sports Network this season, NONE feature a Minnesota school. #stateofhockey

The Gophers men's hockey team made it to the Frozen Four last year, but it will not make an appearance on any of the 24 college hockey games broadcast nationally by NBC Sports Network this season.

This news comes despite the network’s beefed-up coverage to prepare for a NHL lockout.

Fellow Western Collegiate Hockey Association member Nebraska-Omaha will appear on the network six times, which is the most of any team in college hockey. Wisconsin, Denver, Colorado College and North Dakota will also play nationally televised games this season.

From what I've read the Gopher's current TV deals with FSN/BTN made it difficult. I also read that NBC has deals in place with Hockey East, UNO, and Denver. The Gophers are still the most televised team in college hockey. Next year when the B10 starts up, they will have as much national exposure as well.

From Gophersports, meet the Freshmen.

http://www.gophersports.com/blog/2012/09/freshman-faceoff-ryan-reilly.html

As the 2012-13 season approaches, we'll chat with each of Gopher Hockey's nine freshmen starting this week with forward Ryan Reilly.

The son of Gopher Hockey alum Mike Reilly (1979-81) and one of three Reilly brothers on the Minnesota roster this season, Ryan Reilly joins the Gophers after helping the Penticton Vees (BCHL) to the Royal Bank Cup in 2012 as the top team in Canadian Junior A. Reilly's brothers Mike and Connor (Connor and Ryan are twins while Mike is just under two years younger) also skated for the Vees last season and helped the team to BCHL and CJHL titles before taking home the Royal Bank Cup.

Starting his prep career at Holy Angels in 2009-10, Ryan Reilly tallied 56 points (21 goals, 35 assists) in 25 games before joining the Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL) the following season. Last season with Penticton, he set career marks across the board with 73 points, 32 goals and 41 assists in the Vees' championship season.

We caught up with Ryan earlier this week at Mariucci Arena.

You'll wear #9 with the Gophers this season. Is there a story behind that?

I actually wore it in high school at Holy Angels and wanted to wear it last year with Penicton, but I wore #8 instead. #9's always been a number that I really liked, so I asked Gres (Gopher Hockey equipment manager Lee Greseth) if it was available and luckily it was.

Do you have any pregame rituals?

I normally put my left skate on before my right skate. I also like to tape my stick as soon as I get to the rink -- I'll get my undergear on and then tape it up. Those are basically the only two. I like to play soccer before games also, but I'm not very good. I'll play for maybe five minutes.

Growing up in Chanhassen, Minn., what does it mean to you to be a Gopher?

It means a lot. I've been waiting two years for this experience. I'm really excited to finally be a Gopher and to be part of such a rich tradition here. It's going to be a lot of fun.

How are the first few weeks of freshman year going?

I'm really looking forward to getting the season started here in a couple weeks. We've got our first practice pretty early this Saturday, and I'm excited to get on the ice with the guys. It's always a good time.

What's one thing that people don't know about you?

Probably that I really like to read books. I like to read science fiction and a lot of economic books. The one I just read was called "Boomerang."

Last one, what's it like playing on the same team as your brothers?

I'm really looking forward to it. It was obviously a great year playing with them last season in Penticton, and we're all excited for this year too. It's really special being able to play with them. I don't think many people get that opportunity in their lifetime. All of us being freshman together...it's going to be a great experience.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

I don't understand while people get so uptight about Gopher games being on NBC or not. Like mnstate0fhockey said, the Gophers are already the most televised team in the nation so it's not like we are going to be missing many games if they aren't on NBCSN.

Who's uptight? I don't give a rip about them being on NBC. Couldn't care less actually.
