Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Thread 2017-18 Part II

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Thread 2017-18 Part II

Why would you intentionally bring a picture of THAT sport into this thread?
Because I'm indifferent about the sport rather than having an irrational hatred of it, something I grew out of like 10 years ago :D

As for Steve's post about Lindgren, I like that he plays with passion and what not but the problem is he makes some dumb decisions going for big hits and doing things that penalize the team as a whole. He's a good player and probably our best all around Dman but ideally he'd do a better job channeling that aggression and using it intelligently.

Series preview in which Lindgren (plus Sheehy and Coach Lucia) answer questions:

.

There is an disconcerting number of adults who haven’t. :p

Personally, I don’t get the hatred.

You can’t have an embellishment and a ****ing major.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Thread 2017-18 Part II

Wally had some choice words for him tonight. Might get talked to tomorrow. :D

That was a terrible non-call on the offsides. He was clearly over the line.

I’ll take it.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Thread 2017-18 Part II

Well that was terribly depressing, again. Gophers started strong, I was optimistic. Then came the end of the second period, which looked painfully similar to last Friday. Men against boys, boys chase puck, Chinese Fire Drill, Nittany Lions go up by two. Gophers go down by two at Pegula, pretty much game over. I've come to the sad realization that at this point in the season Penn State is simply better than the Gophers. Which as I said, is terribly depressing.

It's only one game, I mean two, I mean three, I mean soon to be four. If this season ends with 4 losses to PSU and first round loss in NCAA it will be very depressing. This team seems fragile, and lacking confidence, strange for a team that had looked like it was hitting its stride a few weeks prior. They now seem very reactive in their own end. Wait for the other team to act, then respond. Not a team that seems to think they are the better team and can outplay any opponent. I think instead of watching film on what mistakes they made, they should watch film of the best moments this year to show the players what they can be if they put in the effort. I remember a few cases of teams that backed into playoffs and then took off, but in most cases momentum seems to be important. (Assuming that 3% chance doesn't occur and they don't even make the playoffs.) Unless something changes quickly, the Gophs have zero.

On the other hand, three weeks off could help get the team refocused and fresh going into regionals, where in a one and done scenario they’re capable of beating anybody. Try to look at the glass as half full.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Thread 2017-18 Part II

I thought it was a closely fought, physical game. The Gophers were definitely fully engaged to start the game, but took some costly undisciplined penalties in that opening frame and PSU took advantage and buried two PPGs. We never regained that first period lead and played catch up for the remainder of the game. Not a very kind scenario for a team with a current road record of 4-11-1.

Speaking of penalties, its first time I've ever seen an embellishment penalty on the player who took a blistering hit (Sheehy) that resulted in a 5 Min. Major + Game Misconduct on an opposing player (Robinson). Huh?? Hard to believe. I guess Sheehy earned his Oscar, and might be one of the greatest hockey actors of all time!

I was looking for FOUR points the Gophers needed last night and throughout this series to win it:

Last Night:

1) Revive the PP - CHECK! Mittelstadt scored two
2) SCORE!! - CHECK! Reedy (1) and Mittelstadt (2)
3) Play Shutdown D - Gophers didn't shot block much (10 vs PSU's 24), and allowed too many Grade A shots near the paint instead of keeping Penn St. on the perimeter.
4) Robson must be on his game - SV% in decline: last Fri. .931, last Sat. .880, last night .840. All three previous games he's allowed 4. Hard to win on those numbers with a four goal deficit. Is he losing his edge? I would not be surprised to see Schierhorn back in net tonight.

I'll add a fifth...STAY OUT OF THE BOX TONIGHT. Go Gophers! :)

1. If Sheehy really deserved an Oscar, his 'acting' wouldn't have drawn a penalty. Great acting wins awards. Bad acting gets embellishment calls. Is anyone who was in attendance able to give a hint to why this was called? didn't have a good camera angle for hit or aftermath. And I agree, don't see how you essentially only give a team 3 minutes for a potentially dangerous hit worthy of a Five.
2. I thought they started strong but the Major penalty on a hit that should have been avoided started the breakdown. I like the effort Romanko brings, more consistently than most, and it shows in how well he controls puck despite not having the hands of many of his teammates, but that was a costly hit. They still looked like they could take the game back over when they tied it, but then Gophs fell apart at times.
3. Who is in nets tonight? And who do people think should play?
4. There have been a few times Mittlestadt has seemed frustrated in the team's performance and lack of teammates execution of plays. (Maybe completely imagined, but at times seems to try to carry linemates himself on some shifts.) I have always thought that the fact he stayed in HS to play with friends and was patient about moving to the next level (and maybe recognizing college is the best place to work on strength) that he might actually want to stay one more year so he has a better chance of just stepping right into the NHL. But when the team is having a couple weeks like this where there is mostly frustration due to under-performing, I wonder if he is having enough fun to want to stay.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Thread 2017-18 Part II

The team's got no response. We haven't even tested whether Penn State could respond...they haven't needed to. Not sure whether its talent (hard to imagine), toughness or chemistry. If 3 back to back heart breaking losses isn't the limit...you'd have to figure this team just isn't capable of winning under these circumstances.

I think they had a response last night by tying it, and they came within one in the third. IIRC the 2011-12 squad had three losses in row and went on to the FF. That might not happen this season but it doesn't have to be terminal either.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Thread 2017-18 Part II

That team could actually score goals though.
Before the season when our hopes were sky-high I don't think any of us thought that scoring goals would be a problem for this team (especially when on the power play!). Now 30 games later, when reality has sunk in, you fear that the team doesn't fall more than one goal behind because the odds of the team coming back and win are very poor.

Just in case anyone cares, the Gophers women will provide a free stream of today's game. Starts at 5pm.
