Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Thread 2017-18 Part II

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Thread 2017-18 Part II

Things are slow around here without the Dead guy.

A sweep this weekend would SUUCK.

(FMP)

I'm pretty confident in the sweep now.

I wish the old thread was still around. I would like to retract my answer to the question 'Do you see this Gopher team making the Frozen four?'. I would replace my answer with one word, No.

And why didn't the schedule say they were playing an NHL team? That other team made the Gophs look like they were just standing around for most of the game. I mean, they established momentum in the past few weeks, learning to give 60 minutes of effort, so I can't believe they just regressed that much.

Anyone around Happy Valley will tell you the Nittany Lions have had a WEIRD season. From Nov.-early Jan. they were unbeaten for 11 games (8-0-3) and ranked as high as 11th in the PWR. Then came the 8 game death spiral @ 0-6-2 until a W against MSU last Sat. Last night was their desperation moment to prove they can still put a complete game together on both sides of the puck against a top ten opponent.

Tonight the Gophers have something to prove. Are they a playoff ready team? They proven lately when they're on their game for 60, and getting good goaltending, they're tough to beat. Last game of the regular season... Let's finish well boys.

Thank goodness. Offhand I cannot think of another one as bad. "Embarrassment on Ice" is what it was.

Largest goal differential in a loss since UND in Oct. (0-4). In all fairness, with the way Penn St. executed last night they can beat any top team.

“I thought that was the most complete game we have played this year, both offensively and defensively,” said Penn State coach Guy Gadowsky. “It was the most consistent game of what we like to think of Penn State hockey. It was nice to see.”

Gophers turn tonight.;)

Are they a playoff ready team?

Ahh...no. Very poor effort on D, Robson let's in a couple softies, pathetic PP and Gopher players consistently standing around out of position = losing home ice. We needed ONE point, but instead it looked like the air came out of this deflating squad all weekend. Where is the tenacity and fight in this team?? There should be a lot of fingers pointed at the coaching staff for this weekend's blunder as well.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Thread 2017-18 Part II

I'd be curious to know how bad we have to do over the next X amount of games to get into the NCAA. Hopefully we just win and it doesn't matter but we should still be pretty safe.

The team gets inconsistent results but the one consistent thing that's been the case all year is low offensive output and a horrible PP. Robson and his .943 sv% has driven a lot of the recent success but when he's not perfect what exactly is plan B?

Well, THAT was not a weekend series I thought would happen. We need just one point to secure quarterfinal home ice, and what do we do..........we lay an egg. If we can instill a sense of urgency in our team, hopefully we turn out 2 wins in 3 games.

Even if they screw up next weekend they'll probably still get in.

They had some momentum going into this weekend, but that's gone. In a one and done NCAA format, they just don't have the right pieces in place to go far. That PP is historically the worst I've ever seen in a Gopher uniform. Bell has not gotten it done this season.

Well it depends how you look at it...

The 2012-2013 team was far more talented than this team and lost to Yale in the first round on a dumb play. Last year's team was far better than this one we all remember how that ended. If anything a one and done format favors underdogs and this team while "inconsistent" could easily outplay a team in one game and get lucky (i.e. Robson is on fire) and get to the Frozen Four.

The bigger issue is even if they do that, what exactly is the plan going forward? It seems like Don sorta does the bare minimum every year to keep his job. While I hope we pull off an improbable run like the 07-08 season (this team stylistically is really similar imo) I'm not sure that'd be the best for the long term. I questioned the direction of this team during that year and here we still are...

Friday was inexcusable. One of the poorest efforts from a Gopher team that I can remember, and I've been following the Gophers for a long time.

Saturday was SO much better. They were trying hard, looking like they really cared and wanted to atone for the night before. Trouble is, it still wasn't enough to win the game. The effort was there, but it wasn't enough, enough to get a single point and avoid having to travel to face the same team that just swept them...not exactly a scenario that helps build confidence.

No, the season's not over, but all of a sudden - in my eyes at least - they've become decided underdogs to advance very far in the post-season. Sure they can still surprise, in a single game or two, but I just don't think they're consistent enough to have a reasonable shot at going very far. Wish I could be more optimistic...

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Thread 2017-18 Part II

Well we’ll see how adjust or if they adjust :D

Idk if I’ve ever been a believer of them struggling on NHL ice vs big ice, there’s just so many other variables to consider. But with our somewhat inconsistent blue line playing against a hard forecheck while ours is more passive/trapping more often, it’s a bit of a disadvantage and it’s not shocking that our puck possession was horrible on Friday.

If Robson plays perfectly then sure this system “works” but we saw what happens when he doesn’t.

I was wondering what you meant here Trix because we got clobbered in the first round of the NCAAs that year against BC. Or were you thinkin' WCHA F5?

Despite the Gopher's performance gaps at times, I'll go out on a limb like a crazed Gopher fan and predict they win against Penn St. in their barn this weekend in three. :)

The F5 is what I was referring to, you're right the season didn't end well.

Edit: sounds like the upcoming series will only be on BTN PLU$
