Minnesota Golden Gophers @ CC Tigers: Oct 29/30

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers @ CC Tigers: Oct 29/30

Hoping for a Split? CC does not appear to be a top 10 team this year. You're supposed to hope for a sweep. You can expect or accept a split. I'm hoping for a NC! Don't expect they'll get close, but why not hope for overachievement? Otherwise people might as well just call you Scooby.
YOu are right We want a SWEEEEEEEEP !

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers @ CC Tigers: Oct 29/30

I hope they do bring Parenteau on the trip to CC he seemed pretty poised back on D and even threw his body around a little, it was nice to see that instead of the practice cones we were using for the first few games.

Edit: I think Patterson on Friday and if he is great in net he will play again on Saturday otherwise we see Kangas on Saturday.

I wouldn't bet on it. Don clearly likes Kangas, and for good reason. He has shown his ability for years to control a game. He had horrible defense in front of him for a couple games this year. This early in the year, Patterson has earned the right for a split and will be playing to continue splitting time with Kangas. He hasn't done enough nor has Kangas done enough to justify Patterson taking over. I would say that Patterson would have to start making circus saves and win a game by himself before Don would consider rewarding him with Saturday's game.

Any word on who will make the trip and who won't?

Roman's reporting that they will take 8/10 freshmen on the trip. Bjugstad is out, so maybe Gardiner stays too. I thought the balance on the defense pairings on Sunday looked good:

Defense:
Helgeson-Fairchild
Ness-Alt
Wehrs-Parenteau

I was surprised to see White starting on the top line with Haula and Barriball after it appeared he was struggling with his game and has actually sat out 3/6 games. He still appears to be struggling a bit to find his niche. He was a first rounder with Vancouver (traded to the Sharks) but it seems he struggles to meet expectations every year. In '07 some scouts thought White was the best stick handler in the draft beside Pat Kane.

You can like the defensive pairings all you want but someone is going to have to explain to me what Wehrs and Fairchild offer to the team at this point. Fairchild doesn't generate any offense and is a defensive liability. Wehrs I guess can at least take a shot from the point but that's about it and he's way too small to move anybody out of the crease.

That is an understatement.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers @ CC Tigers: Oct 29/30

We really need Fairchild to snap out of his funk that goes all the way back to last season. The fact that he was an early pick last year to be a Hobey candidate is mind boggling.

I guess I was thinking more that maybe Patterson would get the nod Friday because of playing so well Sunday against Jan and getting the win, IF he stands on his head and wins Friday night at CC he would get rewarded with Saturday as well. But like you said Don has a big crush on Kangas Khan so probably not.

Really? I thought he had all the accolades coming into his sophmore year after a good freshmen campaign and proceeded to fall of then. His sophmore season wasn't good enough that I remember for him to be a Hobey candidate.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers @ CC Tigers: Oct 29/30

Cade Fairchild's sophomore year was best offensive performance so far. Among players that regressed the most offensively from the previous year (08-09), Fairchild finished third on the team last season (1-Ryan Flynn, 2-Jordan Schroeder, 3-Cade Fairchild). INCH had him as a preseason Hobey pick last year.

I stand corrected.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers @ CC Tigers: Oct 29/30

Here is a little piece from the local rag here in Colorado Springs.

CC vs. Minnesota Keys to the Game

1. Get home crowd involved early

The Tigers (3-2-1, 1-1-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) is playing at home for the first time in a couple weeks. Colorado College needs to jump out to a strong start against Minnesota (3-3, 1-3) this weekend to feed off the energy of an excited World Arena crowd.

2. Minimize power-play chances for the Golden Gophers

Minnesota is 7-for-26 (26.9 percent) with the man advantage, which is paced by senior Jay Barriball's four goals. The St. Louis draft pick leads the team with eight points (six goals) overall.

“Their power play is very strong,” Tigers coach Scott Owens said. “We really need to minimize their opportunities.”

3. Get more diverse scoring

With sophomore center Rylan Schwartz (six points, four assists) out Friday after a game disqualification (kneeing penalty on Saturday), the other Tiger forwards and CC defensemen will need to chip in more points to make up for his absence.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers @ CC Tigers: Oct 29/30

Point three is huge - the line of Jaden Schwartz/Rylan Schwarts and Shultz has been excellent. Fast, fun to watch. Not having Rylan in there on Friday night is going to hurt that line. The Schwartz brothers are a blast to watch on the ice together.

Others were also saying he was over valued due to an amazing state tournament.

Have a Question about Hobey Baker Winner Marty Sertich's Jersey

Have a Question about Hobey Baker Winner Marty Sertich's Jersey

Sorry to jump into the middle of this thread, but I figured this was a good place to find CC fans or someone that might photograph their games. I have the chance to purchase the jersey below, but have some reservations. I'm pretty sure the team never wore these gold jerseys in the Frozen Four (they wore the black set) but my greater concern is that I can't find any photos where the "A" is so close to the shoulder hem. The 2006 WCHA yearbook has several photos of Marty wearing this style of jersey, but the "A" is much lower on the chest.

Does anyone have a photo that might prove this out to be a legit Sertich jersey or have you heard or seen anything about someone producing replica jerseys of Sertich? This jersey is very high quality and well put together, but I want to know if it is a legit game worn jersey or just a really nice "fan jersey".

Any photos you could email me (info@johnsonsjerseys.net) would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ryan J

Preview from Gophersports

Weekend Overview: Minnesota plays its first road games of the year this weekend when the team travels to Colorado College for a WCHA matchup. It is only one of four times that the Gophers will leave the State of Hockey in the regular season. Before leading Minnesota, coach Don Lucia was the head coach at Colorado College where he recorded a 166-68-18 (.694) record in six seasons.

Last Time Out: Minnesota welcomed St. Cloud State to Mariucci Arena for a Friday-Sunday WCHA series. The two teams played on Sunday because president Barack Obama was on the University of Minnesota campus on Saturday. On Friday, the Gophers fell behind 5-0 to St. Cloud State in the second period and could not come back. The Gophers controlled the third period and scored twice, but eventually lost 5-2. Mike Hoeffel and Taylor Matson scored for Minnesota, while Kevin Wehrs, Nico Sacchetti and Mark Alt added assists. Alex Kangas started in goal, but was replaced by Kent Patterson at the 33:33 mark. Patterson stopped all 12 shots he faced.

On Sunday, the Gophers snapped a three-game skid and earned their first WCHA win on the season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory against St. Cloud State. The win also ended a three-game losing streak to the Huskies. For the fourth straight game, the Gophers allowed their opponents to score first, but unlike the previous three games Minnesota scored the important second goal when Jacob Cepis scored on the very next shift. Captain Jay Barriball added a power-play goal at the end of the first period and that was enough for goalie Kent Patterson who started his second game of the year. The junior turned away 25 shots, including 13 in the final period to improve his season record to 2-0-0.

Series History: Minnesota leads the all-time series with Colorado College 158-84-7. The Gophers won both meetings last year at Mariucci Arena and the teams have each won five of the last 10 meetings. Minnesota won 3-0 (Feb. 19, 2010) and 7-4 (Feb. 20, 2010) a year ago, but most of the scoring power from those two games is no longer on the Gopher roster. Of the 10 goals scored, only Patrick White, Mike Hoeffel, Aaron Ness and Cade Fairchild (all one goal each in the series) are back wearing the maroon and gold this year. Alex Kangas was between the pipes for the Minnesota in both games and his 3-0 win in the first game of the series was his most recent shutout and the fourth of his career.

About The Tigers: Like Minnesota, Colorado College is playing this year without its top point producers from last year. The Tigers are without three of their top-four scorers from 2009-10 and their leading returning scorer is sophomore Rylan Schwartz (6g-22a). Senior Tyler Johnson is the only returnee who reached double digits in goals last year (14). Tiger alum Scott Owens coaches Colorado College and has a career record of 242-135-36 in 11 seasons. This year, the Tigers are ranked No. 19 and are 3-2-1 (every game decided by one goal) on the season. They are 1-1-0 in the WCHA after earning a road split with Minnesota State last weekend. Goaltender Joe Howe, who is from Plymouth, Minn., led the Tigers to a 1-0 win on Saturday. Brothers Jaden (4g-2a) and Rylan (2g-4a) Schwartz lead CC with six points.

Road Trip: This week's matchup at Colorado College are Minnesota's first road games of the season. Minnesota played its first six games at Mariucci Arena for the first time in 46 years. This weekend is one of only seven road trips that Minnesota will make this year and is one of only four times that the Gophers will leave the state in the regular season.

Familiar Ice: Minnesota coach Don Lucia led the Colorado College program from 1993-99 and registered a 166-68-18 record (.694) during his time behind the Tiger bench. He guided CC to a 23-11-5 record and the WCHA regular-season title in his first season. The Tigers were 8-28 before Lucia arrived and had not had a winning season in their previous 13 campaigns. Lucia guided the Tigers to three straight outright regular-season league titles in his first three years in Colorado Springs and led Colorado College to the 1996 national championship game and the 1997 NCAA Frozen Four.

Colorado Connections: Colorado College has five Minnesotans on its roster, while Minnesota has one player from Colorado. Freshman Tom Serratore is from Colorado Springs and his father, Frank, is the head coach at Air Force in Colorado Springs. Tiger defenseman Gabe Guentzel is the son of Mike Guentzel. Mike is a former Gopher player and assistant coach and is currently an assistant coach at Nebraska-Omaha.

They're brothers who spell their last name differently? Now that's unusual!
