Minnesota Golden Gophers 2017-18 Season Thread

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2017-18 Season Thread

the other thing is I believe goalies have advanced their skill faster than skaters, there are two things at work here, one is that there are so few spots there are very few teams without a highly skilled netminder, second the skills classes available to a goalie are more productive IMO than to skaters

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2017-18 Season Thread

Somebody should have shown them the Davis OT goal against BC in the 2013 NCAA semi in which she held the puck for an eternity (basically waited for the goalie to commit, which was to flop around on the ice like a fish) before shooting high.

Ha! Boyles the sieve. That was the only time I was ever confused about whether I actually wanted a BC win. We would've fared better against them than the gophers. The gophers put up as many goals on BU in that one game (the Championship game) than BC had all season. :(

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2017-18 Season Thread

D2D, I'd love to take issue with you on this, but alas..........last year the Gopher's shooting percentage was the lowest in program history.

For reference, last year for UW was their 9th (.095) worst shooting % under MJ. In fact the last 4 years have been have been 4 of the worst 5 years under MJ....2016 9th worst, 2015 10th (.094), 2014 13th (.083) and 2013 14th (.082) worst scoring percentages. The 12th worst was when Knight ect were at the Olympics. The best evah for UW was .140. Perhaps this speaks to pokey's goalie development theory.

What has UM's been during the recent long/great run not counting last year (which was????)?

2016- .128
2015- .109
2014- .118
2013- .137
2012- .115

Last year we were .087.
Towards the end of the season last year the only teams Top 17 in the pairwise who had worse were
UND/Quinni .078
Colgate .085
Princeton .086
Vermont was tied with us at .087

Best ever was .146 in 1999.

those players were talented hockey players, but scoring goals wasn't their strong point

the other thing that might be at play here is with the success of the Gophers the last several years, everybody concentrates on figuring out how to stop them
each of the last two years the WCHA has had at least 4 goalies that were All American level, and look at the WNHL, Katie Fitzgerald ends up being named the best goalie, she had to wait till her senior year to be the #1 goalie at StC
competition at that position is thick

If you follow this to its logical conclusion, Gopher coaches are wasting their time watching HS games, since their near-term slots are already filled. They need to be watching U12 games to find their commits for 2022.

Actually, it’s not quite that cut and dried. If you will, let me call 18 skaters and 3 goalies (the number of players that can suit up for a game) the “minimum roster”. The Gophers will have close to a minimum roster in ’17-’18 (12 F, 6 D, 4 G), ‘19-‘20 (12 F, 7 D, 3 G), and ’20-’21 (12 F, 6 D, 2G). The ’18-’19 roster, in contrast, will be bloated (17 F, 8 D, 3G) due to returning national team players and a large freshman class. In recent years, Gopher coaches seem to prefer a couple of additional skaters to balance the risk of injuries and academics. So I expect that they will add a couple of skaters to the 2019 team and another skater and goalie to the 2020 team.

Speaking of minimum rosters, does anyone else remember the Gophers starting a game on the power play because their opponent did not have enough players suited up? My memory wants it to be in ’02-‘03 in Ridder. I would have guessed early December against UMD, but only because they could have had a ton of players gone to play on national teams. When I look at box scores, though, I don’t see the penalty.

Yes, UMD did not have two goalies for a series in Mariucci the fall of 2000:

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2017-18 Season Thread

I watched the semifinal game against Clarkson again yesterday to begin getting ready for the season. All in all, a pretty good game. As in the championship game when they beat us, Clarkson took advantage of their opportunities.

Clarkson had the advantage the first few minutes, but then the Gophers had tilted the ice their way up until the penalty by Williamson. Taylor should beware of penalties in big games becoming a legacy. That hooking penalty was really an unnecessary penalty.

Each of the three lines scored, yes! Pannek, true visionary on the ice, had some nice plays. And the Schipper to Reilly to Schipper give and go for the first goal was a thing of beauty.

I like that the Gophers are a difficult team to beat. No exception in this game coming from behind three times. My memory from watching the first time, was after we tied the score in the third period, Clarkson really took over the game. It didn’t look so much that way this time around. We didn’t dominate Clarkson at that point, but neither did Clarkson dominate us. We lost control of the puck in our own zone, which led to the winning goal. It looked like we may have been tired, and that may have led to the turnover. We had some defensive breakdowns last season and, c'est la vie, that may not have been the most inappropriate way for that team to finally go down. Way to fight back last season, Gophs, and finish the year pretty strong!

I thought Potomak looked pretty good in the last desperate moments after the Knights scored.
