Minnesota Golden Gophers 2017-18 Season Thread

This is a curious post. With no offense intended, where are 7-8 players from Merrimack going to transfer to? Other low-end D1 programs or high-end D3 programs? And why would both assistants also be leaving? I can't imagine they'd be upset with how the head coach runs the program. From all indications she has a very good reputation. More "enlightenment" is needed here please.

Much more eloquent than my post. But that's essentially what I was getting at. Hard to believe this program would fall apart that quickly.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2017-18 Season Thread

The schedule is out: http://www.gophersports.com/sports/w-hockey/spec-rel/071317aaa.html. The Wisco games in Feb fall right in the middle of the Olympics. Hope there's no conflict with Team USA or Team Canada.

Also, there's a non-conference game with St. Cloud State on Jan 9 (a Tuesday). Typically, that has been the Hall of Fame game, but I thought UMD was hosting the HOF game this year. Anyone have details?

It's not the Hall of Fame Game. Both schools just have an opening for another game due to UND's disappearance.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2017-18 Season Thread

With the disappearance of the UND series the second to last weekend of the season, there aren't any good choices for Senior Night. The two options are the Mankato series, with almost a month left in the regular season, and the first round playoff series, which could disappear as well if they win the league.

Yeah, I know. I'm just interested in seeing our highly touted freshman class in action! ;)

We didn't get to see a whole lot of Alex Woken last year as well so I'm curious to see how she develops this year and...Zoom boom is coming. :)

The competition for starting spots should be pretty intense, but that should ultimately make everyone better. Missing Pannek and both Potomaks from the lineup (along with the graduation of an excellent senior class) will open things up for those who can best take advantage of the opportunity. But so many big holes to fill...it will take some time.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2017-18 Season Thread

Good move for her but "did not have the right classes?". Ok.

I know it's tough not to have some sort of bad vibe involved to fit a theory one might have. However, according to the interview, Jackie wanted a career working with children and her coach suggested speech pathology. Jackie researched the field and liked it, but MC didn't offer classes. Hence the transfer.

Very similar to what I was thinking. I swapped Knowles and Brown so each pairing was L/R.

I also thought Pieper will make the top 9, probably bouncing Keller. Not wanting to put two new players on the same line, I had her on the Agnew line and Woken on the Wente line.

I expect Peters to be the primary G early in the season, although we probably will see almost all of them those first three games.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2017-18 Season Thread

I'd guess that if Gulstene isn't going to get at least half of the minutes, then she'll redshirt.

I wonder if early on, they'll go with the people who have college experience there at center, meaning Piazza, Williamson, Agnew, and Schammel would be in the mix. I'm almost certain Piazza will be in the middle, because we know that Pannek will be there next year.

This is a different team makeup than we have seen in the last few years in that there is less ultra high-end talent at forward and on defense. Potentially, the top 6 looks like you could flip a coin for who would be considered the first line. There will be lots of opportunity for players who are upperclassmen to step up their game to fill different roles than they have previously had. They will certainly have some healthy competition from the incoming recruiting class.
