Minnesota Golden Gophers 2017-18 Season Thread

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2017-18 Season Thread

With Reilly transferring from Penn State, Schammel transferring from Mankato and Pieper transferring from Merrimack, they have accounted for 51 of the Gopher points with Reilly and Schammel being to of their top offensive players.

Up From beat me to it.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2017-18 Season Thread

I think that one got away from Frost. That said she broke her leg HS sophmore year, so that may have some bearing.
The one thing all these players have in common is that they never wore a U18 USA hockey jersey. That seems to be a prerequisit for Frost and MJ with their scholarship players.

And the arrogance of the U would tell us all the "Top" or USA Girls would have gone to the U if they would have offered anything to them. LOL, some Girls take the time to do their due diligence to understand the Campus & Culture of the opportunities that are available to them. Playing with the same girls your entire hockey career is not very enticing to some.

From my probably not so perfect numbers, here is what I can tell for who has transfers (not commits changing).

OSU 4
MN 3
SCSU 3
UMD 2
Wisc 2
MSU 1
Bemidji 1

Looks like everyone has their hand in the cookie jar. As well they should, everyone should be trying to get better. The rest of the WCHA all just wish we had a player like Kessel sitting in the closet when they know their overmatched! ;)

Kinda makes you wonder who is benefiting from transfers?

And Wisco got their current captain and leading goal scorer as a transfer.
OSU had additional transfer ins, plus there assistant coach is from UND, plus their head coach is also a Gopher transfer :)
So, IOW, your argument is BS
you and all who chirped in, what a bunch of light weights, next time think your argument thru!

But as for Sadek, they could really use her now, couldn’t they? Hind sight is 20/20. For one, she was only at best the second best HS player from her school at the time, so I don’t think you can fault Frost for that. However, IMO, you can fault Frost for bringing in so few blueliners. Simple math tells you that you have to bring in one and a half Blue liners every year, IOW, bring in one, then the next year bring in two, and that is MINIMUM. Two years in a row he brought in one blueliner, hence the current problem. Making it worse is that one of them is really a forward.

It is also kind of ironic while OSU and Wisco were bringing in more and more players from MN, Frost brought in less.
But I'm not gonna go there.
At least not right now.

Fair comments. In my opinion, Sadek is one of the best defensemen in the WCHA and likely the most underrated player in the conference. I still believe that the Gophers will be difficult to play against between now and the end of the season. Remember before the break, many were writing off the Buckeyes but they turned it around quickly. It seems to be the Gophers turn to live through mediocrity. This weekend is an important weekend for this team.

Pokeman, your passion is awesome and a little Viagra for this sleepy blog this year! However, it is all facts and not BS. Wisconsin's Kepler is from Madison (not surrounding area like MN transfers, but Madison) and went through an entire coaching staff change and chose to go home. Cambell was a kid without a home because of a ridiculous closing of a great UND program and needed to find a place to play. All 3 of your transfers had programs with stable staffs and programs that were not cut and all choose to leave on their own (there may have been a phone call in there?) Moreover, I would argue that the UND girls you are referring to as, "transfers", is a pretty loose term. All of these girls committed themselves to UND and had their hockey dreams cut without warning. I would hope if your daughter was put in this extremely rare position you would support her finding a new college of her choice.

BTW, Wisconsin's transfers have 19 points and yours have 51?

As far as OSU getting a Gopher coach, the one before that was a Gopher, how did that work out? Your passion is clouding your judgement. As I said before they are ALL doing it and they ALL should be! Greatness comes from great recruiting and turning over rocks, if anyone should know it should be you, Frosty and JJ have done a great job at it and they have a lot of banners to show for it!

Not too take away from the current enlightening discussion, but had Sauve and Dunne not redshirted due to injuries on the previous Gopher coach then I think she would be the one being discussed about being a great coach. Sometimes its good to be lucky.

I agree Sadek and Boyle got away. Not sold on the idea that the others would have had much if any impact on this current Gopher team.

I think the Bulldogs get to claim the previous coach.

Just like UND got to claim the Lams before the school wiped itself out of existence :D

BTW, Wisconsin's transfers have 19 points and yours have 51? I see you are ignoring Cambell's stats

As far as OSU getting a Gopher coach, the one before that was a Gopher as pointed out, she was a Bulldog, you'd have a much better argument if you didn't bend the facts , how did that work out? Your passion is clouding your judgement. As I said before they are ALL doing it and they ALL should be! Greatness comes from great recruiting and turning over rocks, if anyone should know it should be you, Frosty and JJ have done a great job at it and they have a lot of banners to show for it!

even a worse try than the previous, I suggest you argue with one of the light weights around here, NutMinder or selfshidt, they are more your intellectual rival

.....Sometimes its good to be lucky.....

Isn't there an old expression that goes something like this, "The harder I work, the better I become. The better I become, the luckier I get."?

Then there's this one, "You gotta be lucky to be good, and good to be lucky."

When you watch Minnesota players that are top performers on the OSU team like Sadek, Boyle, Schepers, Freiburger and Dahlquist, it makes you wonder how these players are not on the Gophers roster or were they simply late bloomers that were overlooked. All are excellent players.

a) you cannot recruit everyone, 5-6 a year is going to be a problem eventually.
b) some may want a program or experience of a different school
c) some 16 year olds develop more or faster than others
d) some personalities are more suited to some programs than others
e) as good as any coach might be none are 100%

Frost told the story of recruiting Ratray & there is no doubt she would have been a great add. She chose to play closer to home & that 'allowed' him to add Terry and Davis. It is safe to say that Davis & Terry added a lot to the natty years (would Ratray done the same? who knows? I would not make that trade but I may be jaundiced.). One thing about hockey is the best players do not win championships, the best TEAMS do. Sometimes the best players are not on the best teams for one reason or other.

Don't think Clarkson would have won the big one in 2014 without Rattray, but would the Gophers have won it all with her? Maybe. Don't like to think what might have happened in 2013 without Davis and Terry though. The Lams in the championship game at Ridder?

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2017-18 Season Thread

Hey can we go back to talking about this please?

She is on the Frosty Freeze Out Program. Kid has talent but just didn't work out for ALL involved. It has happened before & will happen again with all the kids coming in. Destination? Connect the dots by simply looking at the current roster (couple of Chiefs & a good friend) & their need for a puck possession kid! Boom!
BC will be a beast next year! Good luck with the rest of your season.

In some things, like the list of schools with X amount of Nobel winners, both schools get to claim the same individual if he/she went to both schools.

Some stats sites also allow more than one school to claim a player. But I usually just figure where the player got their Bachelors should get the claim. Otherwise you could have 3 maybe 4 schools claim the same player if they moved around a bit. Transferred from one to another school, still got their bachelors before their eligibility was up and then did a grad transfer? lol

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2017-18 Season Thread

For GWH fans who may have missed it, I thought Dan Hamann's interview of red shirt freshman Amy Potomak to be very interesting.

http://www.gophersports.com/sports/w-hockey/spec-rel/012518aaa.html

As tough as it is to not have Amy playing this year and helping the team out, all the experience she gained and her getting settled into school and rejoining the team on the ice the same time as her sister and Kelly will probably make her even better and even if she doesn't come back for her last year because of the next Olympics or something, UMn could benefit incredibly down the line from her not using up a year of eligibility this season. Just hope all this ends up being the best result for her and her sister, too. And of course, the Gophers, too, :)
