Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

That explains a bit. Hoeffel may have scored on Saturday, but I thought he looked awful out there last weekend. Especially on Friday.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Just got a tweet from Hammy that Hoeffel is out for a while with Mono.

****.

That's unfortunate timing to say the least (is there ever a good time for mono?;) ). One of the common symptoms is an enlarged spleen, so avoiding contact sports is necessary as any immediate impact may cause it to rupture. Most doctors advocate postponing strenuous activities for at least one month after the onset of symptoms or until the spleen has returned to its normal size. Hopefully Mike Hoeffel will recover quicker than that.

The SCSU series is going to interesting to see who will step up in his place. I think there's enough talent and energy on this team right now to fill the void if they're desperate enough.

I was thinking 3 weeks, but it may be different for contact sports, like you said. A former roommate of mine had it, and he was back at work in that 3 week timespan, although it took a few days to figure out what was wrong.

Roman's reporting AT LEAST 2-3 weeks. Apparently his parents were pretty shocked he played as well as he did against UND with mono symptoms.

Also reported is news that Goalie Joel Vienneau has been offered a scholarship to join the team next year. The Canadians are coming!! The Canadians are coming!! Well, maybe one anyway. The Guelph Storm of OHL hold his rights. They're the team that also snatched Sam Lofquit (sic) earlier this season, who incidentally is doing quite well with 2 goals, 21 assists in 24 games for the Storm.

NHL Central Scouting Bureau released their mid-term rankings for the 2010 NHL Draft to be held June 25-26 at Staples Center. Joel Vienneau, who is currently playing in the OPJHL with the Kingston Voyageurs was ranked among the Top 30 North American goaltenders.

Selected by the Storm in the 7th round of the 2008 OHL Priority Selection, Vienneau has been outstanding this year for the Voyageurs. The Hearst, Ontario native has a league best 2.10 GAA and 0.929 SV%. Vienneau, who turned 18 on January 18th is currently ranked 29th among all North American draft eligible goaltenders.

Next year? Is Patterson not on scholly, or do they anticipate Kangas leaving after his jr season?

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

I wondered the same thing and I can't find the answer.

College goalies leaving early for the AHL is stupid. I can't think of many college goalies that left college for the NHL. I would be surprised to see Kangas in the NHL next year. I will take a Canadian goalie, but I was hoping for a Finn!!

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Star Tribune said:
Obviously, coach Don Lucia must expect either Kangas or Patterson to be gone by next season if he is telling Joel Vienneau he has a roster spot for him.

Looks like Lucia believes either Kangas or Patterson gone after this season.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Hammy's post on GPL suggests that Kangas is likely to be the one to leave.

According to Joel Vienneau's father, it's pretty much a done deal. I agree with Hammy on Kangas bolting. It was reported last year I believe in the Pioneer Press that before 2008-09 season, the Atlanta Thrashers tried to sign him. He'll be 23 years old in May and he may be thinking it's time to make the move.

That's a big goalie.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Saw this gem recently and thought I might as well post it.:D Diciphering the nomenclature, "knowledgeable person" vs. "someone close" is the first clue in the game.

A knowledgeable person said on Wednesday that goalie Joel Vienneau has not been offered a scholarship by Minnesota, contradicting what someone close to Vienneau said the day before. Vienneau, who plays for Kingston of the Ontario Junior Hockey League, made a recruiting visit last weekend.

But then his father said this (presumably "the closest person" :D):

"I'm pretty sure it's Minnesota," Dennis Vienneau said. "It's a nice school to go to and I'm 95 to 99 percent sure he is going there."......He expects his son to sign in April, when the spring signing period begins, and be on a college team for the 2010-11 season.

With Kari Lehtonen hurt (and hasn't played yet this year) I could see that, too.

Update on Mike Hoeffel: looks like he will miss SCSU, UAA and Bye Week series ;) but be ready for Den..

Would have been nice to have him back for the Bye Week series that's always a tough one.

I'm no doctor, and don't even play one on TV, but I thought how much a person was affected by mono was highly variable. I thought it was more of a wait and see situation with some people taking longer than three weeks. thought it was premature to predict a return date. Maybe there is something I don't know though.

Given the precarious position the Gophs are in, I sure hate to see the top scorer go down, especially given the other losses. I like Miller's hustle. He is fun to watch. But he is a significant step down from Hoeffel. Let's hope Cepis stays hot and others pick it up too. Schroeder is due for a multi-goal game sometime.

Even with a healthy Hoeffel, Barriball and Mattson, it would have been tough to get points. Without 'em, I write that weekend off. (I don't think I'll even watch them.)

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Sorry to intrude on the Gophers thread, but I have a quick question that someone here should be able to answer. CC recently recieved a verbal commitment from Mike Morin, who is a Senior for Breck. What level of hockey is "Class A", which I understand is the class that Breck plays in. Is that for smaller schools? Is there any chance a kid could come in from there and play right away in the WCHA? Any information on how good a WCHA player Morin might turn out to be? I'm looking for anything at all.

Please send me a PM so I don't derail this thread any more than I have already - and sorry for the off-topic question.
