Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Once again, the Gophers failed to match the intensity of UAA in the first, which set the pace of the game and UAA was able to control it from there. The Gophers had good chances but missed the net or hit bodies in front. UAA played desperate, blocked shots and defensively shut down SOG.

Time is running out for the Gophers to secure home ice and an NCAA bid. The toughest part of the schedule this season is about to begin. Next week is the bye series and then following week the series is in Denver where the Gophers are 2-2-2 over the last 4 seasons. Without winning the F5, the Gophers need help from other teams and need to win 6/8 remaining games (at least 2 series sweeps) to have a shot at the NCAAs. I'm going to go way out on a limb here and predict the Gophers will suddenly feel the sense of desperation and sweep the bye series next weekend.

Harley do you sleep?

I will not sleep or eat until the Gophers win another NCAA Championship!;)

Agreed. Though it does seems like a stretch to be able to get home ice now we are probably looking at a 6th-8th finish.

We need to sweep Bye Week and go from there and who knows maybe they can put a winning streak together to end the regular season.

When do we get to stop hanging on to the string? Cause, frankly, since no hay was made over the UND/SCSU/UAA stretch (2 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie). Why should anyone in their right mind think any hay would be made after bye week with Denver/CC/tUMD/Wisconsin?

Let's be realistic.

True. Just trying to spin a glass half full view for the rest of the season.

I don't know if anyone listens to "Beyond the Pond" and it's rare to call out a college player, but Mr. Flynn got thrown under the bus during the program for his defensive play last week against SCSU. They were wondering why he's so awful defensively and has one goal (an empty netter).

Is it really throwing someone under the bus when its the truth? The kid is just not a good hockey player.

Is it true that the men's and women's teams are switching arenas due to the fact that the women's team is actually winning a lot of games? That's the word on the street, anyway.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

The Gophers will not score a single goal this weekend. Better hope Kangas throws up the wall against Bye.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Good news and not too soon enough. Hoeffel might be back against Bye.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

No, Hoeffel will not be back against Bye. I heard Lucia is starting Tony in net this weekend so he can be on all the ice all the time, instead of just half the game.

You guys are starting to sound like us Tech fans. It is scary and a little sad. :(

If nothing changes in the off-season (Blais) and we get ANOTHER year of the same ****ty results and effort we might as well be Tech (and the Monsoning of the program will be complete)...... the laughing stock of D1 Hockey.....

Are you sure? That's surprising news in light of Lucia's Kangas addiction.

What they need now are Points. And I bet they don't get a single point against Bye! Bye has never lost. Gophers have a better chance versus Denver. (I've run out of optimism.)

Well, according to my gopherpucklive sources (joe-v among them), since Lucia wanted to build this Gopher team around Tony, he decided to put him at goalie, since that is the most important position on the ice. Kangas will play in place of Fischer in a pairing with Leddy, but will continue to wear his goalie pads and use his goalie stick, as Lucia believes Kangas will better take the body than Fischer if he wears the goalie pads.

I'm not saying my sources are right, I'm just reporting what I've heard.

In the one shift out of every ten games where he uses his body and plays like he wants the puck, he actually looks like he could be a major contributor on offense. Last year, he had a number of good shifts at the end of the year, taking the puck away from guys in the corner and muscling it towards the net, that made me think this year would be different. Instead, he went further back than Tallackson ever did from the end of one year to the start of the next.

(And don't forget that the empty-netter was the one he sort of stole from Hoeffel.)
