Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

$20.00 says the WCHA takes the crown back in 2015. Takers?

I wouldn't count out Harvard next year but I'm surely not taking that bet. It's going to be a retooling year for our Knights and knowing very little about the incoming recruits, I don't know what we'll have for next year.

Several teams I'm not counting out. Including non WCHA teams. I don't believe my proposed wager is risk free. ;)

Wonder what kind of odds a person could get on Clarkson repeating as champions. Or for that matter even making the tournament next year?

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

The wager is far too small to catch my interest, and besides, I doubt I'd collect. ;)
I wouldn't make the bet with you. I know I wouldn't collect. I recognize absence of character and honor when I see it. ;)

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

was in control of that game was when they were on the pp, which in my opinion was called a little one sided and kept that game closer than it should have been. Clarkson was hands down the better team on the 5 on 5 for the majority of that game.

Uh, no. Minnesota had far more time in Clarkson's end. There were times when the announcers said it looked like MN was on the PP. They never said that about Clarkson. Clarkson is a very good team...but they were not the better team.

I've seen it time and again. MN took control in the second and then got complacent. After it was 3-3, they needed to put them away soon. And when they didn't, the game came down to whoever scored first. If that happens in the second, MN storms back. With 8 minutes in the third and the title on the line, even the lady gophers couldn't pull that off. Credit a lethargic second half of the second and first half of the third to the result.

Congrats on a great year to both teams.

Would anyone know specifics regarding eligibility for the U of M athletics Hall of Fame per the M Club? Is there a time frame or window of eligibility or required time lapse before initial eligibility?

On a positive note, I was encouraged by announcer confidence that Kessel will return. They said that she was dying to get out there on Saturday against UW. Its sounded positive throughout the year...but you don't count chickens early.

What else would she do? It's the best place to get that level of competition and training, and a degree while you're at it.

She might hang them up. She's been battling an injury for some time and may decide the joint replacement at age 35 doesn't appeal.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

I know this is the Minnesota thread but I think it's a little too much bias. You're right Minnesota had control for a good portion of the first... But from then on the only time Minnesota was in control of that game was when they were on the pp, which in my opinion was called a little one sided and kept that game closer than it should have been. Clarkson was hands down the better team on the 5 on 5 for the majority of that game.

Sorry, I obviously wasn't clear (and yes, I'm a BC fan). I meant to say that I expected Minnesota to dominate, and they did in the first and for the first five of the second, but other than that the two teams were very level, and I was surprised by that. I also agree that in the third Clarkson were the better team, even when MInnesota had the extra attacker at the end.

Funny, because I thought the majority of the holding came from the Gophers and was not called. The calls made against Clarkson I really have no complaint about, except the body checking call on Rattray, which was bogus. I really didn't see much obstruction or hooking from either team. I thought the officiating was Minnesota biased and the line work was horrible for both teams.

As far as who had the better of play, I'd say it was a toss-up. Minnesota clearly controlled the first period. I thought the second was pretty even with each team doing what it does well. Clarkson was tenacious on the forecheck and Minnesota was great at creating chances with skill plays. The third period, I thought, leaned more toward Clarkson, mainly because, as you mentioned, Minnesota made mistakes. I would say that the mistakes were due, in part, to Clarkson's pressure.

FWIW, it seemed to me that Clarkson were much more physical. And that body checking call was entirely legitimate. Not taking anything away from Clarkson -- they're physical, opportunistic and adaptable, and were great at putting on the pressure as you say.

Not only was it completely legitimate, it came shortly after a nasty check into the boards, close to deserving five minutes and a game for checking from behind, at the other end that drew no call. Clarkson played a very physical game that worked because the refs called a very loose game, as was true for all of the NCAA tournament games. Had the refs called an even but more tight game, the Knights would have been in a lot of trouble. If that's the way the game is going to be called, more power to Clarkson for playing a style that works under those conditions, but it doesn't have to be that way.

There seems to be a trend in women's hockey of allowing more and more checking into the game and you can count me as not being a fan of the change, but it is what it is.

On the outside, there will be no added photos on the walls of Ridder Arena…
Not exactly true, because there are murals of the conference championships as well.

How about when Jamie got dragged down from behind when she got past the first defender and was trying to take on the other 1 on 1 or the body check behind the net shortly there after... Neither of which were called. But luckily Karma showed it's true colors and MacAulay scored on the breakaway soon after.

There were plenty of obstruction penalties that went uncalled both ways.

And All-Americans and Olympians.......
And in addition (not murals) but two new banners........and dreams for next year.
