Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Happy Thanksgiving to you, too, Mr. Walker! I liked the story Mrs. B related to me about your idea of giving Mr. Claus Gopher women's hockey tickets this Christmas instead of milk and cookies as written on the suggestion board of the local coffee shop (Starbucks?). Always the Gopher fan and ever the promoter for Gopher women's hockey!!

And the Gophers start the weekend off with a 6-0 win over Princeton

Two recaps I've seen so far...

U. of M. Athletics - Cameranesi Leads Gophers in Win Over Tigers

USCHO - Cameranesi picks up three points, Leveille stops all 11 as Minnesota blanks Princeton

I saw a "news services" recap on the web site of one of the two Twin Cities daily newspapers, but it was real brief and hadn't caught the fact that there were some scoring changes. I didn't see any post (yet) on the web site of the other paper.

Real nice to see Bethany Brausen get her first goal of the year! She anticipated the play great, working to get herself open in front and slammed it home when Terry put a perfect pass right on her stick.

The rumor is that Peters is being redshirted so you're more likely to see Sletta.
Wanted to get back to this as it is something I had not heard previously. Makes a fair amount of sense to me...so I was wondering if anyone can verify as fact?

Unable to get to the rink again today unfortunately. Contrary to the Saturday game, the video was glitch free and good quality. From the BTN digital vantage point that looked a little like the proverbial "clinic" today from Minnesota. Just a couple isolated misplays from the freshman converted D that didn't end up hurting them.

Team appears to have returned to an overall state of improvement health wise.

Looked like good crowds both days and atmosphere sounded charged both days as well.

Per the remote online game day experience I'll say it again, I do not care for the game blog / Twitter connection as I'm not a tweeter. Miss the original blog format for games.

You can say that again! ;)

OK, I'll say it again, with a minor twist.

Real nice to see Bethany Brausen get her SECOND goal of the year today, coming right on the heals of her first one yesterday! AND, she got a real nice assist to boot.

Can't verify "as fact", but the coach's decision to have Sletta play the 3rd period would seem to support a decision to redshirt Peters. There have been plenty of other opportunities to give her playing time as well.

At least offensively, Brausen seems to be a different player when she is on a line with Kelly Terry than when she's not. Kelly's explosions up the ice create opportunities for her, and they also see each other well. I thought Meghan Lorence had a similar connection with Sarah Davis, but she "made do" well with Brandt/Schipper this weekend. ;)

The plan to redshirt Peters is official, as Frost was talking about it in public today.

Any insight into why Rachael Bona was moved off the Brandt line? She seemed to be doing great on it.

Minnesota doesn't have a single big line to carry the offense this year. Bona works well with Brandt, but she did fine with Sarah Davis and Maryanne Menefee this weekend, earning a pair of assists per game. Davis and Kelly Terry, the other primary centers have been producing all season, so Bona hasn't been banished to a lesser line.

Not only has Bona not been banished it seems to me that it would be just as fair to ask why Brandt has been moved off the Bona line. It simply is NOT a case of someone being "moved off" a line. It looks to me like the coaching staff is trying different combinations with an eye to what might work the best in March.

All three centers have been consistently excellent all season as has Bona. This weekend Davis seemed particularly en fuego but that could easily be a factor of having Bona and Menefee on her wings.

As for Brandt, she certainly seems to have clicked with Lorence, that line with Schipper was dangerous on every shift all weekend.

Equal time provisions require me to point out that Kelly Terry seemed to be everywhere every time she was out there, that line also had more than Princeton could handle whenever they were out there.

Probably also worth mentioning that for at least the last 50 minutes of the game today Minnesota rolled all four lines and even the fourth line had plenty of good opportunities.

If you are redshirted, do you still have your name on the roster and game sheets?

Sure. The only requirement is that you cannot play in any game. (The rules for medical redshirts are a bit different.)

In fact, she's still dressed on the bench during games, participating in warm-ups. It's as Eeyore said.

Jessica Havel, the Bemidji State goaltender, got an extra year of eligibility since she had played only a mere single period over her first three seasons.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

As a redshirt, as I understand it, you participate in all team practices and activities...you just can't step on the ice for a game. If spots are available, the redshirting player may travel with the team as well (there are NCAA limits as to the number of people the team can take with them on road trips).

last year Lorence produced the vast majority of her points when she was on the Brandt line substituting for Menefee,

usually, when you put lines together you want people that complement each other, that is they are somewhat different, and their differing talents add up to something beyond the sum of the individuals.
